Curbside Collection Handbook for recycling, compostable waste & garbage pick-up

1. Compostable Waste Compostables are collected weekly on your regularly scheduled collection day. What you need to do:

Acceptable containers:



Place compostables containing any food waste, in re-usable waste containers that have a compostable waste or yard waste sticker.



Maximum capacity of 80 L.



Maximum weight of 23 kg.



Must be between 55 cm and 76 cm tall.



Yard waste can also be placed in tied bundles or in Kraft paper yard waste bags.





Additional compostable waste stickers can be picked up free of charge at City Hall, ARC, MRC, the King Road Works Yard and the Abbotsford Mission Recycling Depot.

Must be designed for curbside waste collection including having a watertight lid and graspable handles. Two graspable handles are required for containers over 50 L in size.



Full Kraft paper yard waste bags must be less than 12 kg in weight. Only paper bags of good integrity will be collected. Plastic and compostable plastic bags will NOT be accepted.



If you live in the bear-resistant container area, all food waste should go in your bear-resistant container. Do not place any food waste in your garbage cans, garbage bags or yard waste bags.



A maximum of 10 compostable waste containers, branch bundles, and Kraft paper yard waste bags will be collected weekly.



Branch bundles can be up to 1 metre long and 60 cm in diameter.



Please have your bundles, bags and containers at the curb by 7:00 am in full view of the street, and please ensure your compostable waste sticker is visible from the street.

Do NOT include: • Glass or metals of any kind • Styrofoam or plastics of any kind (including compostable and biodegradable plastics) • Pet waste/kitty litter • Disposable coffee cups • Wax coated cartons • Diapers and baby wipes Compostable Waste Drop Off (Including food and yard waste) Residents and businesses are able to drop off their food and yard waste for a fee at: Net Zero Waste Abbotsford Compost Facility 5050 Gladwin Road | 604-557-7065 Hours: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Seven days a week Closed all statutory holidays

• Pasta products • Nutshells • Fats, oils, butter and mayonnaise • Food contaminated paper plates, napkins, paper towels and pizza boxes • Wooden popsicle sticks and toothpicks • Tree and hedge prunings • Stumps, logs and branches must be shorter than 1 metre in length and less than 15 cm in diameter • Wire, twist ties and rubber bands • Rocks, dirt and sod, other than in incidental quantities • Wax paper, aluminum foil and coated baking paper • Cigarette butts • Vacuum contents and bags • Dimensional, engineered, painted or treated wood

2. Recycling An unlimited number of blue recycling bags can be placed at the curb weekly on collection day. What you need to do:

Curbside Recyclables:



Recycling must be contained in the see-through blue recycling bags available at many retail stores.



Beverage containers (including tetra paks)





Do not place recycling in cardboard boxes. Cardboard boxes must be flattened, and placed in blue bags or in tied bundles, not exceeding 60 cm in length or width.

Cardboard (flattened, tied and bundled)



Newspaper, magazines, office paper and phone books



Glass bottles and jars



Tin and aluminum cans and foil



Milk cartons (rinsed and flattened)



Plastics #1, 2, 4 and 5 (including stretchy plastic like grocery bags, Ziploc bags and bread bags)



REMEMBER: All recycled material must be clean and dry. Motor oil containers and Styrofoam are NOT accepted in the blue bag. Please put paper egg cartons in the curbside compost, and NOT in recycling.



REMEMBER: Recyclables are banned from the garbage.

Acceptable bags: •

The size limit for empty blue bags is 66 cm x 92 cm.



Have your blue bags and bundled cardboard within one meter of the curbside by 7:00 am on collection day, in full view of the street.

Abbotsford Mission Recycling Depot 33670 Valley Road | 604-850-3551 Hours: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Seven days a week Closed all statutory holidays The following materials can be taken to the Recycling Depot for disposal free of charge: Up to 10 bags of curbside recyclables (as listed above), household hazardous waste (including paint, flammable liquids, aerosols, propane tanks, household pesticides and lead acid batteries), electronics, appliances, cell phones and cell phone batteries, ink jet cartridges, scrap metal, household batteries and all types of light bulbs including compact fluorescents.

3. Garbage You will receive bi-weekly garbage collection for up to three cans on your collection day. What you need to do:

Both facilities permit drop off of residential garbage and First Class accepts appliances such as fridges, stoves, freezers, air conditioners and hot water tanks.

4. Inclement Weather All attempts will be made to collect curbside materials during inclement weather. If collection is missed, please set out again the following regularly scheduled collection day, or as otherwise advised by the City at www.abbotsford.ca. If collection is delayed until your next regularly scheduled collection day, you will be allowed double your regular garbage allowance. Servicing your home is our priority, but safety of people and properties always comes first. If there is any risk, we will not be collecting.

5. Missed Collection Common reasons your garbage was not collected: •



Items were not at the curb on time (by 7:00 am).



Containers exceed allowable limits.



Prohibited materials were present.



There were more than the allowed number of bags/cans of garbage without an extra bag sticker.

Items were hidden or not accessible behind a parked vehicle or snow bank. If none of these reasons apply, please call 604-853-5485 for City collection or 604-864-5640 for contractor collection. If you are unsure who collects your waste call 604-853-5485.

Current Curbside Collection Calendar The City provides curbside collection for recycling, compostables and garbage to single family and duplex residences in the City of Abbotsford. Each residence scheduled to receive collection is mailed a copy of their specific collection calendar by mid-December. If you would like another copy, please enter your address at www.abbotsford.ca and click on collection schedule; or you can visit City Hall, ARC, MRC, the King Road Works Yard or the Abbotsford Mission Recycling Depot for a copy of your calendar.
