The fastest answer to your fluid temperature control needs In many production processes, the low temperature cooling of process fluids is often both necessary and beneficial. This is to achieve a high degree of process control and stability as well as to increase product quality, yield and selectivity.

The CUMULUS® Fluid Temperature Control (FTC) system is the optimal solution for rapidly bringing your process down to temperatures between –30 and –120 °C, with unchallenged accuracy. The system uses liquid nitrogen as cooling medium to automatically cool process fluids in a highly controlled manner.

CUMULUS® FTC system solutions are utilized across Europe and throughout the Americas, efficiently solving cooling demands for a wide variety of customers. Common fluids cooled by the system for customers within the pharmaceutical and chemical-process industries are: methanol, toluene, SYLTHERM® XLT, brine, and many others.

Unique on-site test service We at Linde provide a unique test service that offers you the advantage of conducting full-scale operational trials with a CUMULUS® FTC system in your process on site. the attractive benefits you are looking for Easy to install To minimize your production down-time, the CUMULUS® FTC system can be quickly integrated into your production or existing cooling system. It can be installed either indoors or out without the need of rebuilding your facilities. The installation work is minimal: the system needs no special foundation and can be installed in a few days. Linde’s skilled and experienced service personnel will assist you during the initial startup period by carrying out site acceptance testing and safety checks. You can thus have your system up and running within a few months from the order date.

Easy to operate The fully automatic system is very easy to operate and needs no special operating personnel or supervision. After a minimum of preparation, the normal startup and shutdown procedures are simple and brief. Once the liquid nitrogen has been fed to the unit, the CUMULUS® FTC system becomes operative within a few minutes after simply pressing the start button. To further increase simplicity and speed up your startup procedures, Linde assists you by initiating tuning procedures as well as by providing basic training.

CUMULUS® FTC modular systems CUMULUS® FTC units of different sizes have been developed to build up a flexible modular product family, with different cooling duties and cooling temperature ranges to cover a variety of cooling needs. The modules can be used for either batch or continuous cooling. Their wide operating ranges allow for greater flexibility in quickly and reliably adapting to changing plant conditions. All modules are standardized and delivered as complete systems that require very little extra work. This enables you to get your CUMULUS® FTC system up and running quickly and smoothly. After thorough testing, each unit is delivered to your site along with complete documentation.

Smart, patented technology The CUMULUS® FTC systems are based on a patented technology from Linde. This solution minimizes any problems or risk of freezing as regards the process fluid. Direct heat exchange between the cold liquid nitrogen and the cooling fluid is avoided. Instead, cold vaporized nitrogen gas is utilized as the intermediate heat-exchange medium, resulting in fast and efficient cooling.

Reliable The units have a rugged design without moving or rotating parts, which ensures long operating life and increased reliability. This benefits you through its low maintenance and service needs, thereby reducing operating costs and production stops. Furthermore, your total operating costs are lowered to an absolute minimum if the nitrogen gas is reused for other purposes, for example inerting, in your production facilities.

Automatic operation The control system provides you with the option of easily operating the unit automatically, either locally or remotely. The CUMULUS® FTC system can be delivered with or without a control system, whatever suits your situation best.

For small-scale pilot-plant operation or laboratory purposes, this unit represents a small and easily handled system with a cooling capacity up to 5 kW. This unit can also be used as a central cooling unit in other equipment. It is, for example, used as a cooling module in freezedryers. Cooling temperatures of –100 °C can be reached.

This unit can be used for cooling needs in pilot-scale to small-scale production. The CUMULUS® PX20 cools down to –100 °C, with a cooling capacity up to 20 kW.

Flexibility to meet your different needs Different sizes The availability of five different modules allows you to choose the optimal system for your particular cooling needs. The main parameters in choosing a model are the required cooling capacity, flow and temperature.

Easily expandable Any CUMULUS® FTC module can be readily expanded merely by connecting a new module parallel to the existing one. Each module can be further tailored to your requirements by utilizing a wide range of optional accessories such as heating units and valves and sensors for a number of functions.

CUMULUS® PX50 and PX100

At extreme conditions, when there is a need for extra-low temperature cooling requirements down to –120 °C in fullscale production, the CUMULUS® XLT 50 module represents the optimal solution. It has a cooling capacity up to 50 kW.

For cooling needs in full-scale production, the CUMULUS® PX50, and PX100 modules have a nominal cooling capacity of up to 50, and 100 kW, respectively. These modules can cool process fluids down to –100 °C.

Nitrogen tanks are owned by Linde and leased to customers. Linde assumes the responsibility for servicing its own tanks. This service includes valve replacement as specified by the relevant regulatory authority. Servicing also covers the gaseous nitrogen equipment that feeds the outgoing nitrogen from a CUMULUS® FTC unit to the plant network. A tank computer is a valuable option for customers with large cooling demands, since it ensures that there will always be sufficient liquid nitrogen available for uninterrupted operation. The computer maintains a constant check on tank contents and informs Linde automatically whenever more nitrogen is called for.
