President’s Message by Valerie Dzbynski

Ahhh…finally the warm weather. I complained about the bad weather earlier in the year and we are finally at my favorite time of the year…..spending time in the garden, enjoying the outdoors, and relaxing poolside. With all the great weather, there comes a downside. Staying motivated at work. I recently read a Forbes article on how to stay super motivated and am trying hard to focus on these key points daily: (http://www.forbes.com/sites/siimonreynolds/2013/07/28/how-to-stay-super-motivated/)

1. Make a commitment to personal excellence 2. Remind yourself of your strong points (don’t focus on your weak points!) 3. See yourself as unstoppable 4. Congratulate yourself every evening Finding ways to incorporate fun stuff in the day also helps! After our last Cumberland Valley SHRM Chapter Meeting on Wellness, I purchased pedometers for my employees. It is amazing at how little we move during the work day. My goal for the year has been to take something away from each meeting and add it into workplace. After all….it is not just about gaining credits, it is about learning. Enjoy your summer! Remember, after May we do not have monthly meetings until October. We do have the Diversity Conference and Legal Conference as well as the new member mixer so keep watching the website and newsletters! -Valerie

Cumberland Valley SHRM News and Updates

Legal & Legislative Updates by Walt F. Lachenmayr, MBA, SPHR

Here are the highlights of some of the momentous changes in both Federal and Maryland employment laws during the past month: Maryland Parental Leave Act (PLA) goes into effect this October - The PLA allows eligible employees to take up to a maximum of six weeks of unpaid parental leave in a 12-month period for the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child. This Act covers Maryland employers with 15-49 employees. See this link for details: http://kollmanlaw.com/disability-leave/parental-leave-act-passed-by-maryland-general-assembly/ O'Malley Signs Minimum Wage Bill - This is a correction from last month' s newsletter. The Maryland minimum wage will increase "incrementally" from the current rate of $7.35/hr each year until it attains $10.10/hr in 2018. The rate increases to $8.00 on January 1, 2015. Best regards, Walt

Emily Hadley a Business Management Major with a minor in Human Communication Studies at Shippensburg University was selected as the recipient of CVSHRM’s $1000 2014scholarship. Emily has a 3.5 GPA and has been on the Dean’s list multiple semesters. She recently completed an internship with Glatfelter Paper Co. in Spring Grove, PA. While there she was able to gain practical HR experience and utilize her academic skills. This job experience specifically involved the areas of compliance, employee relations in a union environment, principles of lean/continuous improvement (CI), and most notably Emily helped to develop a reallocation of Human Capital that resulted in an annual savings of $27K to the bottom line for the company. These results have proven that Emily has successfully demonstrated her transfer of learning to benefit an employer and has already begun to make a difference in her field of study. Her campus involvement includes Public Relations Office of the SHRM chapters as well as member of the Phi Sigma Pi’s National Honors Fraternity.

Congratulations Emily!

One fifth of professionals in the country are working and taking care of both their children as well as older family members. The sandwich generation is getting worn down by the demands on their time and lack of resilience to separate work/life domains. This interactive session will identify stressors associated with being part of the growing sandwich generation. Through appreciative inquiry and group discussion, participants will discover possible strategies for managing this challenging time in their lives and better plan their personal time. Mary Ellen Waltemire is a life and leadership coach, certified recently by Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC) and ACC certified by ICF. She encourages individuals to focus on the present as they make purposeful choices for a more satisfying future. After taking the ELI and through coaching, she assists individuals in identifying ways to move their energy from catabolic (negative) to anabolic (positive) levels. Most recently she became certified as a Personify Leadership trainer, which emphasizes eight core body-focused competencies for “wanna be” and current mid-level and top leaders. Ms. Waltemire has a B.S. degree from Shepherd University, a M.A. from Hood College and an MBA degree from Frostburg University.
