Objectives • Describe why using picture symbols increases expressive and recepKve language skills.
• IdenKfy three ways picture symbols can be used to decrease communicaKon breakdowns that lead to frustraKon and undesired behaviors. • Demonstrate creaKng pictures symbols using three or more resources and formats. • Describe best ways to use picture symbols for rouKne based acKviKes and family goals.
Purpose of Picture Symbols For CommunicaKon: • Increase understanding of verbalizaKons • Reduce verbal input from caregivers • Reduce frustraKon • Teach how to communicate For Behavior: • Following rules • Ease transiKons • Reduce negaKve behaviors • Increase desired behaviors
Increase understanding of verbalizations • “He knows what I’m saying…..”
Pictures enable child to: • Have a “back-‐up” means of receiving informaKon, mulKsensory experience with direcKons • Minimize the distracKons of what is going on around them and focus on message • See what is expected and know the outcome • Associate words with acKon…or picture • Increase recepKve & expressive vocabulary

Communication: It takes two… • Typical developing kids this will occur naturally • Developmental delay, AuKsm, Sensory Processing Disorder, CogniKve delay, interfere with this milestone • Difficult to “teach” this without moKvaKon • Especially difficult to teach without speech!
