THE

Bishop John J. Snyder High School Fall 2016

From Deacon David Yazdiya, Principal “Prepare the Way…” On August 10th we welcomed our fifteenth class of freshman students, and it is remarkable how much has happened over the years. I have always said to our teachers that what happens at Bishop Snyder High School does not happen by accident. The carrying out of our mission has to be purposeful and focused. It has to reflect what we want to achieve through our programs, namely, to prepare our students for college and beyond equipped with the values and teachings of the Church and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We can only stay the course if we take time to assess what we did last year; what we did well and what we can improve. Let me take a few moments and share the good things that have happened and are being planned for Bishop Snyder High School. We received very positive feedback during our five-year accreditation visit this year. AdvancEd, the accrediting body for colleges and schools, visits every school on a five-year rotation. A visiting team of four people spent two days at our school and found excellent practices and made some recommendations to help us become even better. Needless to say, we were strongly recommended for re-accreditation. While our academics remain strong and challenging, we are keenly aware that it is our Catholic spirituality and identity that separate us from other educational

systems. To help increase this aspect of who we are, we began having weekly Mass every Friday for the whole school. The grace that has come from that decision for both faculty and students has been amazing! We are excited about continuing to have weekly Mass. In an effort to make Bishop Snyder High School accessible to more students, we purchased a van complete with the school’s logo that can transport an additional six students. We now have two buses and a van that can provide transportation to over fifty students who wish to attend Bishop Snyder High School. We must keep focused on making our school even better and to that end, we have a few things in place for this year. We introduced RenWeb, a new software parent communication program that will hold our database and will communicate academic information to the parent. It is a diocesan-wide change and will improve the way we communicate with our families. We also have renovated one of our classrooms to house a new computer lab to benefit the Foundations program. Another venture that we are excited about is the new relationship Bishop Snyder High School has with Morning Star High School. Ninth-grade students who will open Morning Star High School will visit our campus throughout the year to enrich their spiritual and social high school experiences. We are thrilled that Bishop Snyder High School has been selected to share the good things that are happening on our campus with the new ninth-graders at Morning Star. All of the wonderful things happening at Bishop Snyder High School would not be possible without the support and prayers of our benefactors and stakeholders. Our faculty, staff, students, families, board members, and stakeholders all comprise the rich tradition that is Bishop Snyder High School. May God bless each and every one of you and may God continue to bless Bishop Snyder High School. Deacon David Yazdiya, Principal

Principal’s Service Award Mr. and Mrs. Raymond and Kelly Wood Raymond and Kelly Wood are the recipients of the Principal’s Service Award. They are committed to making Bishop Snyder the best school it can be by lending a hand wherever and whenever needed to make a positive impact on our school and for the students. Raymond and Kelly’s youngest child, Casey, graduated this year. Their older children also graduated from Bishop Snyder; Ian ’09, Trevor, ’12 and Shelby ’13. We are grateful to families like the Wood family who value Catholic education and chose Snyder for their children. The Principal’s Award is given each year to an individual or couple who are committed to the mission of Bishop John Snyder High School and who have made a difference in making our school an even stronger witness to its mission of Catholic education.

Campus Ministry by Ms. Joy Pichardo Many Blessings This year we experienced so many blessings. One of our favorites was the decision to have Mass celebrated every Friday for the entire student body. Our school is even more united in faith as we regularly come together around the Eucharistic table. We are grateful for the priests throughout the diocese who have come to celebrate Mass. A blessing that came from having weekly Mass was that more students are involved with the ministries at Mass. We are grateful to Mr. Lou Turecky who trains lectors for our Masses. Our senior lectors this year were Alex Brennan and Cynthia Whitmer. Deacon Yazdiya trains altar servers. This year’s senior altar servers were Jacob Andreoli, Matthew Andreoli and Brandon Jones. Our music ministry led by our Music Director Mr. Brian Urso adds so much to the Masses. The seniors who served in liturgical music ministry were Sarah Conrad, Keeley Doski, and Angela Taylor. We are thankful to Father Denis O’Shaughnessy from Mary Queen of Heaven who celebrates our 7:20AM Mass and to Fr. Joseph Kuhlman from St. Matthew’s for his weekly visits on campus to hear confessions. Fr. Joseph joined us at the junior and senior retreats, the senior trip to St. Augustine, and the freshman trip to venerate the relics of St. Maria Goretti. The group of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion commissioned in August 2015, served throughout the year at weekly school Masses and Tuesday morning Masses, set up for Adoration and were assigned general upkeep of the chapel. They were Sarah Blackwell, Keeley Doski, Bianca Forte, Caroline Geary, Sarah Hejmanowski, and Janica Occiano. We wish them all the best as they begin their college careers. This year’s EMHC’s attended the Diocesan Retreat for Rising Senior EM’s last spring at Marywood Retreat Center. They joined the other diocesan high schools for a day of prayer and reflection about the Eucharist and about service to others. The eleven seniors were installed August 15th at the Mass for the Feast of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We pray for these young men and women as they enter into this ministry of service to God’s people. They are Catherine Cavallo, Courtney Cowman, Meghan Donner, Tretyn Fenske, Julianna James, Cody Khong, Patrick Martens, Juliettee Springs, Jennifer Tate, Michelle Vo and Ysabella Yumul.

The Peace in Christ Award was created in 2002 when Bishop Snyder retired as the Bishop of St. Augustine. It was named after his Episcopal motto, "Peace in Christ." Here, we consider this award to be the highest honor a student can achieve. Bianca Forte is a shining example of the virtues set forth in the Peace in Christ Award. She was selected as a Senior Cardinal Award winner, was President of the National Honor Society and is a member of Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society) and the Science Honor Society. She is a Peer Leader, Editor of the Yearbook, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and President of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Bianca has chosen to attend Florida Bianca Forte State University this fall.

Catholic Days at the Capitol

Last spring, a group of 14 students traveled to Tallahassee for Catholic Days at the Capitol. Catholics from every diocese in Florida visited Tallahassee to make their voices heard on issues relevant to Catholic social teaching. Our students met with Florida legislators to discuss issues relating to the death penalty and abortion. They also observed a Senate committee session, a session of the Florida House of Representatives, and attended a luncheon with many pro-life leaders throughout the state of Florida, including the bishops of all 7 dioceses.

Teresa of Avila Award “Christ has no body now on earth but yours. Yours are the only hands with which He can do His work.” These words hang above the door in Campus Ministry. Maura Webb and Janica Occiano are the recipients of this year’s Teresa of Avila Award and have lived this quotation in different and very real ways. Maura Webb recorded the most service hours Campus Ministry has ever seen for one student: 971 cumulative hours. Most of her service hours were earned at “Camp I Am Special,” a special place for campers who are children, teens and adults with unique needs. The camp also serves as a special place for Maura who finds purpose for her life there and sees a loving God who blesses each of us with human dignity. “True humility,” as St. Teresa wrote, “is walking in the light of truth.” Janica Occiano seems to possess the selfknowledge that it takes not only to walk in truth but to continue seeking truth. St. Teresa also is quoted saying that humility is accompanied by peace and joy. Janica exhibits these attributes with her friends and while leading retreats, and also has a beautiful spirit of gratitude and a loving heart, especially as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.

Deacon Yazdiya and Martin Luther King III met at this year’s Catholic Days in Tallahassee.

Mary Awards In May, the third annual St. Vincent’s Healthcare Foundation Mary Awards chose Bianca Forte as one of their sixteen finalists. She was recognized in the category of Academics. The Mary Awards are built around St. Vincent’s Healthcare’s core values of “Service of the Poor, Reverence, Integrity, Wisdom, Creativity, and Dedication.”

National March For Life in DC 76 students and chaperons, including chaplains Father Denis and Father Joseph, boarded two charter buses on January 21st. There were ominous weather reports of a Nor'easter coming up the coast in 48 hours, but that did not stop the pro-life pilgrims. As the day dawned through the windows of the bus, there arose concerns of safety with the approaching storm being called the “worst blizzard in decades.” The original itinerary was subsequently adjusted to ensure the safety of all involved. The students attended the Pro-Life Vigil Mass at the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in DC. After a beautiful Mass they reached Saint John Paul the Great High School where they ate pizza and experienced fellowship, and then spent the night. Early on the morning of the 22nd, with warnings of the impending blizzard, the students and chaperons loaded the buses and departed for home to beat the inclement weather.

St. Vincent de Paul Society The St. Vincent de Paul Society was led this year by President, Bianca Forte, Vice President, Sam Dulka, and Treasurer, Kaela Varias. The installation of members took place after Mass at St. John the Baptist in Interlachen. SVDP meetings and service projects focused on the pillars of the Vincentian Society - service to the poor, the vulnerable and the sick. The club provided dinner at Ronald McDonald House, ran an arts and crafts project once a month at Jammes Group Home, and assisted hosting the L’Arche Harbor House’s Living Nativity. They sold candy grams at Halloween to raise money for Thanksgiving Baskets which helped 16 families. The members managed the tuna drive during Catholic Schools Week to benefit the food bank of Catholic Charities. We will miss our seniors Bianca Forte, Sarah Hejmanowski, and Cynthia Whitmer and look forward to new members who share their enthusiasm for serving others.

Venerating the Relics of St. Maria Goretti On October 28th, the class of 2019 visited the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception to venerate the relics of history’s youngest saint, St. Maria Goretti. The students were able to kneel in twos and pray in front of the saint’s holy remains. Known for her virtue and her mercy, St. Maria is a model for all young people and is the patroness of youth and purity.

Seniors Visit the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche The senior class visited the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche within the Mission Nombre de Dios in St. Augustine. Bishop Estévez has requested that all Seniors visit the Shrine, and for Snyder seniors it comes at a time when they have had a time to reflect upon the senior retreat and their relationship with God and with each other. Father Joseph Kuhlman joined the seniors and chaperones to celebrate Mass at the new shrine. After the Mass, the students visited the museum and the mission grounds.

Catholic Heart Workcamp Philly In June, thirteen students and 3 chaperons traveled to Philadelphia for Catholic Heart Workcamp for an amazing lifechanging week of service, fun and spiritual enrichment. They left the camp base each morning and walked to their sites, worked and enjoyed the fellowship of block parties with the residents until about 2:30PM. Each evening they experienced an exciting program, ending with praise and worship. Before returning home, they ran up the “Rocky Steps” and enjoyed a Philly cheesesteak sandwich. The crew consisted of Allie Approbato, Courtney Cowman, Caleb Frazier, Lucas Frazier, Catelin Gobaton, Grace Hejmanowski, Patrick Martens, Justin Nguyen, Quinn Russell, Juliettee Springs, Jesse Stanley, Jacob Walsh, and chaperons Mrs. Dawn Frazier, Ms. Nicole Friederich, Mr. Adam Jackson and Ms. Joy Pichardo.

Catholic Heart Workcamp Jacksonville Catholic Heart Workcamp Jacksonville was held on our campus in June. For the third year, we opened our doors to 250+ teens and their chaperons to call Snyder home for five nights. The parish groups came from Connecticut, North Carolina, Maryland, Alabama and all over Florida to serve the community in metro Jacksonville. Ms. Joy Pichardo served as the manager of the camp and found 34 sites where the different teams served during the week. The sites included Catholic Charities, seven sites of Episcopal Children’s Services programs, Sanctuary on 8th Street, FarmShare, Seamark Foster Ranch, Trinity Rescue, City Rescue Mission and Thrift Store, and Cecil Pines Senior Living Community. This year Ms. Pichardo worked with senior citizen centers in Jacksonville to find seniors in need of house repairs or painting projects. Ten seniors’ homes were painted and/or repaired through the efforts of this year’s camp. The camp was successful with the help of the Snyder maintenance staff, and our volunteers, especially the The Hejmanowski Family, The Pimentel Family, The Frazier Family, The Stanley Family, Catelin Gobaton, Mr. Adam Jackson and Juliettee Springs.

Catholic Schools Week Catholic Schools Week was one to remember! Bishop Estévez celebrated a lively Mass to kick off the special week. Deacon Scott Conway, Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of St. Augustine, served at the Mass along with Principal Deacon Yazdiya. On Tuesday we celebrated Faculty, Staff and Administration Appreciation Day by providing lunch and a gift card raffle during afternoon announcements. Wednesday we celebrated “Food Truck Day” for all, as four local food trucks came to campus. Thursday, Student Appreciation Day included Lunchtime Karaoke and the afternoon “Snyder’s Got Talent” show was enjoyed by the student body. We concluded the week with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Friday with the special intention for our beloved Catholic school, for the intentions of all of our students and families and benefactors, and for the success of all Catholic schools.

The 2016 baseball season was a rebuilding year for the Cardinals, as six seniors were replaced in the lineup by underclassman. The Cardinal pitching staff, captained by seniors Josh Culberson and Kody Kellum, competed and gave the team a chance to win every game. Kellum and Culberson both finished the season with a 2.0 ERA. The Cardinals, playing in arguably the toughest district in the state, fought hard in district play, but fell short of the playoffs in losing in the semifinal district game to Episcopal. The team is on track to be competitive next year, with the majority of the position players returning. With lofty goals, the Boys Cross Country Team made their 9th consecutive appearance at the State Finals in 2015. At summer running camp in July, they set their sights on another District Championship, and another Top-10 finish at the State Finals. The team entered the post-season ranked 1st in the District, 2nd in the Region, and 3rd in Class 1A for the State. With dedication and perseverance, that is exactly how they finished the season, with a 3rd District Championship, 2nd Regional Runner-Up, and a 3rd place best finish at the State Finals. The team effort was led by Senior Jackson Neri, who was the individual District Champion, the individual Regional Champion, and who finished with a Bishop Snyder best 10th place at the State Finals. There were outstanding performances from Aldren Biala (15th at State Finals), Jack Randall, John Webb, Cole Sprunt, Jalen Chance, and Alex Asuncion, with tremendous support from alternates Zach Marquis, and Kody Fisher.

Competitive Cheerleading

Jackson Neri was selected as a VyStar Athletes of the Week for Cross Country and Track and Field. Jackson was featured on WJXT on March 7, 2016.

By Coach Angi Brannan The 15-16 season was a great one for the cheerleaders. The first competition was held at Providence school, where they placed first in their division. At the FHSAA regionals in Marianna, the girls placed second out of 17 teams, with a score of 70 qualifying them for the FHSAA finals in Tampa. The girls competed hard at the FHSAA finals in Tampa taking 3rd place. The Competitive Cheerleading squad was comprised of Katherine Eatough, Emily Edgington, Sophia Edgington, Anna Eplawy, Abigal Galette, Jordan Gill, Julianna Herring, Olivia Kanobroski, Cynthia Kellum, Denesha Loggins, Elizabeth Markoski, Scarlett Medina, Fresa Mendez-Alejo, Valerie Miranda, Jennifer Tate and Hanna Terhaar. Coach of the Year By the Florida Track & Field Hall of Fame Last year, Coach Terry Smith was named the Coach of the Year by the Florida Track & Field Hall of Fame. The announcement came after our 2015 publication went to press, but we couldn’t let a great accomplishment such as this go unnoticed. This year, the students and coaches of Snyder chose Coach Smith as the Coach of the Year.

Football By Head Coach Travis Markoski The Cardinal Football Team had its ups and downs this year as the Cardinals looked to rally behind seniors Alex Brennan, Daniel Crouch and Brandon Jones. Alex leaves Bishop Snyder as the school’s all-time leading rusher with 2,696 yards. The Cardinals had notable wins against Stanton in the second game of the season and Eagles View to end the season in a 3-7 campaign. The Cardinals have been playing as an independent team for the last four years without a chance for post season play, but this year we have joined the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. The SSAC is going to allow the Cardinals to compete for a Division, League, and Conference title in this season. Returning for the Cardinals are seniors Thomas Lewis, Lance Hill, Jordan Jenkins, Brandon Dayao and Nick Martens who look to take advantage of the opportunity to play for an Independent State Title.

Boys Golf By Coach Doug Ramsey The golf season was a solid one as the team played in an exceptionally competitive district. The Cardinals had a good regular season going 7-5 in season and finishing up with a strong second place finish in the district finals and advancing to regionals. Led by the string play of junior JP Garrido and freshman Ryan Poblacion the boys displayed determination and played sound golf all season. With many players achieving personal best scores in match play, we are excited for the upcoming season. Our record did not indicate the success our players achieved this year. We had six players that wore the varsity uniform for the first time, and we will continue to build our program with incoming freshmen led by junior, Madison Jaeger.

The girls’ soccer team was defined by its leadership last year. With captains Maura Webb and Alie Frazel, the team was able to amass a winning record and a 4th place district finish. Mason Tuttle and Courtney Cowman handled much of the scoring duties, while Allie Approbato protected the net. The upcoming season will see 9 seniors and a great new crop of freshman to go along with a solid set of underclassmen. Wrestling

It was a challenging year for the Cardinal Wrestling Team. With only two starters returning, there were many gaps to fill in a 14-man line up and many of those gaps remained empty. With only 7 wrestlers, five of those being freshmen, the Cardinals faced a huge uphill battle. On the positive side, all 7 wrestlers will be returning for the following season. With that return comes a full off season worth of mat experience. The 2016-2017 season looks very promising for the Cardinal Wrestling Team.

Anna Alvarado Anna Alvarado embodies the values expressed in our mission statement of “Competence, Conscience and Compassion.” She is intelligent, service-oriented, athletic, and faithful to the Anna Alvarado Gospel. The combination of these talents and her hard work helped her achieve the honor of Valedictorian for the Class of 2016.

As the cost of Catholic education continues to exceed the financial abilities of some families, the Annual Appeal helps bridge the gap making Catholic education possible for those who otherwise would not be able to give their children this wonderful opportunity. This year’s Annual Appeal begins in September. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation. All undesignated gifts will go toward tuition assistance, but you may designate your gift to benefit athletics, fine arts or technology. You may also choose to designate your gift to one of these established endowments. Focus on Excellence is a privately funded program that benefits students of high academic achievement whose families qualify for tuition assistance. Families whose children have been recipients of this scholarship program are encouraged to donate to this fund. “Without the generosity of the Annual Appeal and The Nu-Trend Plastics Scholarship is a one-year scholarship given to an 8th grade student Focus on Excellence, I undoubtedly would not have been from St. Matthew’s or St. Paul’s Catholic Schools. able to attend Bishop Snyder.
