BHS is an international school we admit children from the international community here in Lagos and from all parts of Nigeria.

Prospective pupils along with their parents would be interviewed by the school head or deputy head if the head is not available. In order to maintain an optimum level of academic functioning across the school, the prospective pupil would be expected to undertake activities or written tests over the course of school day which must be successfully passed. The applicant will be observed to determine several personal character traits such as ability to settle, disposition, temperament and so on. For the very youngest, this may involve drawing pictures, oral interview, sorting activities and identification shapes, games etc. Older applicants will be expected to undertake formal written tests in numeracy and literacy. These tests would be based on work they have undertaken in the preceding term. The school runs from 1st September to 31st August and children unless there are exceptional circumstances relating to ability levels, are always taught in the age appropriate groups. We admit children at any time throughout the academic year. Many children enter the school in the Toddler Class (18months) Pre-Nursery class during which they will have their second birthday. They then progress through Pre-School Class where they celebrate their third birthday and they move to the Nursery class and on into Reception.

Health & Safety Policy BHS has a health and safety policy. The health and safety officer checks the premises every morning, afternoon and monitors the condition of indoor and outdoor play. Premises, indoors and outdoors equipment are inspected daily. Fire exits and smoke alarm are checked regularly, floor is kept dry and clean making access easy for children. Trained Securities ensures 24 hours safety of life and properties. All gates are locked; all activities take place under supervision.

For more safety precautions, the school has designed a pick – up code, which will be given to the parents. The code might be changed as often as the management deemed fit. If there was any change to the pick- up code parents would be informed via telephone, sms or any form of communications. The school does not allow any person to pick-up children other than known guardian/parents or any delegate person with a code to pick-up and in the case of any delegate, parents should at least inform the school authority. Discipline & Behaviour Policy At Brighton Hall, we pride ourselves on the high standards of discipline and the good behaviour of the children attending our school. We actively promote self-discipline, encouraging children to be responsible for their own actions as well as to care for and respect other people and property. Punishment and reward systems do operate in school in order to help us maintain a high standard of discipline. Through planned curriculum activities, and collective acts of worship, children are taught tolerance of others and to celebrate individual differences. The one rule for all of us in school is everyone will act with courtesy, kindness and consideration for the safety and well-being of others at all times. This means that: 1. You always try to understand other people's point of view. 2. In class you make it as easy as possible for everyone to learn and for the teacher to teach. (This means listening carefully, following instructions, helping each other when appropriate and being quiet and sensible at all times.) 3. You move gently and quietly about school. (This means never running, barging or shouting, but being ready to help by opening doors, standing back to let people pass and helping to carry things). 4. You always speak politely to everyone (even if you feel bad tempered!) and use a low voice. (Shouting is always discourteous.) 5. You are silent whenever you are required to be. 6. You keep the school clean and tidy so that it is a welcoming place we can all be proud of. (This means putting all litter in bins, keeping walls and furniture clean and unmarked and taking great care of the displays, particularly of other people's work.) 7. Out of school, walking locally or with a school group, you always remember that the school's reputation depends on the way you behave.

Our Curriculum

B

righton Hall School aims to provide an academic programme which will stimulate and encourage each pupil to reach their full potential in all areas of the curriculum. Picture the subject information is based on the National and Nigerian Curriculum. Subject Coordinators, Class Teachers and Subject Specialists work together from this core curriculum to build an exciting teaching programme which differentiates to accommodate the learning style and ability of each child. The information will enable you to map your child's progress through each Key Stage during their education at BHS and support your child in each area of the curriculum. It also gives an overview of how we assess and evaluate pupil performance.

Our Core Subjects English The Curriculum in BHS develops competent and enthusiastic readers, writers, speakers and listeners. We place particular emphasis upon extending children's reading abilities, analytical skills, writing structure, oral and written vocabulary.

Speaking and Listening All children are encouraged to participate actively in discussions and to regularly contribute to 'news' sessions in the early years, where children recount events and experiences. Throughout their time at school, children use good speech, appropriate vocabulary and correct grammatical forms. Public speaking skills are developed through participation in drama and role play, retelling stories, school assembly presentations, poetry recitation, speech delivery, plays and school productions.

Reading Our English curriculum uses phonics from Nursery and throughout the Early Years. In addition to phonics, the children participate in a literature based reading programme by utilizing our school library. Children are motivated to read in an environment which displays print and identify various aspects of the printed word, including its purpose, effect and meaning. Reading should be an enjoyable activity. It is important that teachers and parents work together to give all children support, encouragement and patience to develop at their own reading interest and ability. As well as daily reading sessions, children should read each night at home and in the early years, this should take the form of reading and discussing the stories in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Allow your child to point to each word if it helps them. Discuss the pictures and the story and predict what will happen. In the older years, students should read aloud as well as silently and listen to reading, i.e. books on tape. During transition, reception children should be positively encouraged when trying to spell words. Individual learns the sounds represented by letters and then letter combinations. The child then attempts to blend these sounds to pronounce small words. As the child develops, the blending becomes more complex. From the end of Reception the children have different spelling words every week. Encourage your child to look at the patterns in the words to make learning easier. Confidence is very important. Be positive towards their efforts. Informal testing takes place throughout reception.

Our Curriculum

13

Our Curriculum Handwriting Children concentrate on learning the correct starting point of each of the lower case letters from Transition and Reception. Writing with flicks is encouraged, as this makes it easier when the children learn to join their letters and they are taught in groups with similar patterns. The information of letters will be constantly revised and regular handwriting lessons are given. Children are expected to present their work neatly and tidily. Parents should listen to their children read as frequently as possible, and it is helpful if a note/comment is made in their reading logs. As children mature further in their reading they will be reading independently each night and recording their own comments.

Mathematics Numeracy is a proficiency that involves confidence and competence with numbers and measures. It requires an understanding of the number system, a range of computer skills and an inclination and ability to solve number problems in a variety of contexts. Numeracy also demands practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered by counting and measuring and it is presented in pictures, graphs, diagrams, charts and tables. All teachers are involved in the planning of Mathematics. The Mathematics Coordinator prepares the schemes of work for each year group, ensuring continuity throughout the school.

Science Science is an important medium for developing and promoting other areas of the curriculum. Science stimulates language development by providing opportunities for oral and written responses. It is a motivator for practicing and developing reading skills and encourages the purposeful use of instructional materials. Children naturally explore the world around them from a very early age. Topics are developed that relate to their interests and every day experiences so that curiosity is stimulated and pupils are motivated to understand and interpret the world around them. Our aim in BHS is for children to develop the knowledge and understanding of important scientific ideas, processes and skills. Children will be encouraged to observe, classify, question, plan, measure, and interpret data. They are encouraged to observe, predict and investigate.

Additional Subjects In addition to the above mentioned three core subjects, all children in the school aged five and upwards have lessons in humanities, dance/drama, art and design, guided learning, swimming, PE, ICT, cookery, independent and initiative skills and French.

Religious Education The school is not affiliated to any specific religion. However all faiths are respected.

T

he school extends the curriculum through additional activities either during the lunchtime or at the end of the school day. Activities are usually for children aged 7 – 11 years. The following are some of the recent clubs: Sports club, Science, Art, Computers, Design and Technology, Let's Get Cooking, Dance and Drama, Press club, Music club.

Our school has an 'in it together' attitude to learning. We believe in letting parents and guardians know what and how we are learning. We encourage twoway dialogue between school and home and support this through parents' evenings, workshop meetings, curriculum information, 'learning diaries' such as reading record books and invitations to many of our assemblies. We also believe that homework can help reinforce what we learn at school. All our children get homework, but our teachers are careful to make sure that it is kept to an appropriate level.
