Imagine having chronic respiratory challenges and trying your best to breathe easy and adjust to dramatic swings in temperature while at school. This is exactly the struggle many of our students with developmental disabilities and medical frailties face every day. Our Maryvale campus, while spacious, is over 60 years old and has an antiquated cooling system that has a hard time constantly adjusting to the dramatic temperature swings in our Buffalo weather. In addition, the building has old and drafty windows that provide yet another hurdle to keeping our building temperature controlled and bright. we would like to thank these significant donors who helped us reach our grant match requirement: Allied Mechanical The Buffalo Renaissance Foundation The Children’s Guild Foundation The James H. The incredible trustees and staff at the John R. Oishei Foundation recognized the needs of our kids and graciously awarded us a challenge grant to purchase new windows and cooling systems for our Maryvale school. Because of their generosity, our kids will be able to breathe easier and stay cooler in the hot, humid summers, and stay warm in the dead of winter. They will also benefit from the entire school environment opening up with the fresh and bright atmosphere provided by the new windows. On Thursday, February 6th, we held a “Meeting the Challenge” celebration. Officers of The John R. Oishei Foundation were in attendance, as were other major contributors and members of the community.

Yet, no amount of “thanks” seems sufficient, as this tremendous gift will help our students breathe easier with improved air quality, stay cool (or warm) and will literally open up a new window to the world in a brighter, more inviting school environment. “We have many students with severe respiratory challenges in addition to other special needs, and we have been committed to improving the air quality in our school for them,” said Michael L. Gross, Executive Director of Heritage Centers. “The new windows and new HVAC system will help them breathe easier and adjust to temperature differences while they are learning and receiving various therapies, especially during the warm, humid summer months—and these ‘bone chilling’ cold winter days. We are so grateful to the John R. Oishei Foundation for investing in the well-being of our students and to all the donors who helped us match the Challenge Grant.” The John R. Oishei Foundation strives to be a catalyst for change to enhance economic vitality and the quality of life in the Buffalo Niagara Region. The Foundation was established in 1940 by John R. Oishei, founder of Trico Products Corporation.

Heritage Centers to become National Model Heritage Centers is proud to announce that we have received a three-year grant from The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation for: “The Next Step: Becoming A National Model and Licensed Partner with The Floortime Center®” The Greenspan Floortime Approach™ is an integrated and holistic methodology, developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan, that looks at each individual child’s emotional development, social relationships, methods of communication, natural strengths and sensory integration. The goals of the model are: ~ Promote each child’s overall development ~ Strengthen each child’s ability to process, reflect and communicate effectively ~ Enhance each child’s ability to relate and interact socially This model has proven to fit perfectly with the kind of individualized service and technique we believe in implementing with our students.

Three years ago, the foundation granted us multi-year funding to have Jake Greenspan and Tim Bleecker, of The Floortime Center®, train our school staff and establish five dedicated Floortime classrooms. Over the years, the response from both our staff and students has been so positive, we proposed to take it one step further! Starting this year, six staff will embark on a two-year professional journey to become trained Floortime professionals- allowing Heritage Centers to be the first agency in North America to be a licensed partner with The Floortime Center®. We cannot wait to see what is in store for our children as our staff become licensed professionals and can begin to delve deeper and reach out to parents. “We are extremely excited and honored to become future partners with Heritage Centers. Thank You To the Buffalo Sabres! HEP students, parents and staff were joined by Buffalo Sabres at the school’s annual Fall Carnival in October. Current and alumni players had fun with our students in bounce houses, playing basketball, making snow cones and helping with pony rides. Casullo’s “Car Inspection for a Cause” Casullo’s Automotive Services, Inc., located at 2783 Elmwood Ave. in the Village of Kenmore, has announced their “Car Inspections for a Cause” campaign whereby 100% of the cost of your car inspection will benefit Heritage Centers! “Together we can make a difference,” said Rocco Casullo, president of Casullo’s Automotive Services, Inc. “Any and every vehicle owner is required to pay

up to $21 per year to have their car or truck inspected. We value our customers, as well as this very deserving and important local charity. So why not pay it forward? It’s something we can all feel good about.” The 2014 Casullo’s “Car Inspection for a Cause” runs through the entire year. Please support Casullo’s and their fundraising endeavor when your vehicle inspection comes due this year.

Two Group Homes get new looks replaced the home’s 100 year old columns. Other upgrades included a brand new porch and stairs, new sidewalks and landscaping. Now this neighborhood gem is more beautiful than ever!

Our West Ferry group home on Buffalo’s West Side underwent a complete makeover during the second half of last year. Contractors used special shoring to hold up the third floor porch while they

during warmer weather. A smaller porch was also added on one side, as well as a brand new sidewalk which circles the entire house. Residents use the walkway for exercise and it provides better fire evacuation routes.

In the Southtowns, our Sunset group home in Hamburg also had major upgrades in 2013. Two beautiful porches were added to the home for outdoor activities. The new rear porch is large and has enough room for all residents and staff to relax outside together

Our agency is deeply grateful for the Kiwanis Club contribution for our kids to attend “Camp Kiwanis” every year at Cradle Beach. It’s an incredible week-long camping experience for many of our kids who would not otherwise have the opportunity. A special thanks to John Vogel and Bill Schultz- the major organizers in establishing the annual funding, bus transportation and gifts for the campers.

Heritage Centers Awarded NYSARC Trust Grant We are pleased to announce that Heritage Centers was the recipient of a $6,000 grant from the NYSARC Trust to provide recreational and social opportunities for individuals who are part of Heritage Centers. A portion of the grant funds were used to offset some of the expenses associated with the

luncheon, awards and DJ for our annual Employment Recognition Event for our individuals who are involved in our workshop programs. Funds were also utilized for our for Residential Services’ 2nd Annual Family Style Thanksgiving Dinner. A community hall was rented and the families of all the

individuals in our residences were invited to join us for dinner. Additionally, the grant provided support for our Community Support Services Program. The funds offset some of the costs involved in community-based recreational activities for young adults in our programming.
