Creating healthier communities, together

Dear Friend of Providence, We are blessed with your generosity and commitment in our ongoing journey of providing excellent, compassionate service to our patients and communities. Because of your support, 2014 proved to be a banner year that will allow Providence in Oregon to make significant advances in the fight against cardiovascular disease and cancer and to take many other important steps forward. We hope you enjoy and are inspired by all of the stories you helped make possible in this annual report. Because of you, children in speech therapy are communicating with their families with the help of digital devices, frail elders living on the north coast are receiving improved care, and horticultural and aquatic therapy programs continue to play important roles in our continuum of care. “Thank you” seems inadequate, but it is heartfelt. Providence literally couldn’t be Providence without your faith, enthusiasm, support, talents and energy. Together, we are creating healthier communities. Thank you wholeheartedly on behalf of all those we serve.

Health eXpress opens in southern Oregon

In our effort to provide affordable and appropriate care, Providence Medford Medical Center worked with local coordinated care organizations to provide Providence Health eXpress to their members. This new technology, purchased with funds provided by the foundation, is located on the Providence campus and is designed to assist with quick visits. Patients who may have gone to the emergency room can now receive care for minor concerns, such as pink eye, rashes or ear aches, in a more appropriate and more affordable setting. It is now open to Providence Health Plan members and all other community members on a walk-in basis, just like an urgent care clinic. n Providing

Health eXpress is a new approach using communications technology for patient care.

support for families

The Swindells Resource Center of Southern Oregon provides support to families with children who have special needs. Specifically they offer a lending library with more than 3,000 different resource books and journals and more than 60 speaker events across the region. Especially impactful are the seven parenting courses the center offers in both English and Spanish and the one-on-one consultations with parents. The outreach of the Swindells staff in southern Oregon resulted in more than 10,000 touch points through the year. The work of this center is solely supported by donations. No fees are collected from the hundreds of families accessing this resource center.

Families with children who have autism and other special needs receive help from the Swindells Resource Center to answer questions, create plans for educational needs and improve family support.

cancer therapies

For many cancer patients, “patient navigation” sounds like a tool for “finding your way” through the doctor’s office or medical bills. Thanks to philanthropy, patient navigation at Providence Medford Medical Center has become much more. In 2014, our patient navigator services added more alternative therapies. Cancer patients participated in new art therapy groups. Art therapy helps patients increase hope, resolve trauma associated with their condition and give more concrete representation of emotions and feelings. Breast cancer patients participated in yoga classes. Yoga has proven to reduce stress, improve sleep, aid in healing and even prevent recurrence. These classes were offered to patients at no fee, thanks to the generous support of our donors.

Patients in our cancer center express their physical feelings and emotions in original art work.
