Creating a New Project You should use a different project for each movie you are creating.

Editing an Existing Project This icon indicates that the project has been shared on-line. Projects can be shared to YouTube or your Mobile Me Gallery. When you edit a previously shared project, you can ask iMovie to update it again. You can also ask that the project be deleted.

Importing Clips Clips can be imported from the Macʼs iSight camera, from drive connected to your computer, or from an iMovie HD project. Selecting import from camera will activate the Macʼs iSight camera. Select Capture to begin recording.

When you import, the items you import will show in the Event Library. By default, the Event Library appears in the lower portion of the screen. To switch the project and event panels, click here.

Selecting an entry in the Event Library will display the clips on the right side. You will also have access to any video clips you have uploaded to your iPhoto library.

Editing Your Clips To edit your clips, click and drag inside the clips. It will add a yellow box around the portion of the clip you have selected. Once you have edited and selected your clip, click on it and drag it to the project area of the screen. At the bottom of your screen you can change which clips appear in your events. Rejected or unused clips are NOT deleted until you move rejected clips to trash and perform a Space Saver.

Clips you have used will be marked with and orange bar, clips you have rejected will be marked with a red bar, and favorite clips will be marked with a green bar.

Clips will appear in the project portion of the screen. There will be gaps between each of the clips you have added. This is where you can add titles, transitions, backgrounds and still photographs.

Arranging Your Clips You can arrange the order of your clips, as well as the other elements of your project, by just clicking and dragging the items into the order that you want. You will do this in the project area of the screen.

Adding a Transition or Theme When you add a theme, you gain access to a variety of different pages. Adding a theme can also automatically add transitions between your clips. Once you have added a theme, you can add a transitions. To add a transition or select a theme, select the transition symbol from the toolbar on the right side of the screen.

Then insert the transition you want into your project by clicking and dragging between the clips. The transition will appear as an icon between the clips. Each transition type has a different icon.

Insert Backgrounds, or Still Photographs Backgrounds or still photographs can be used with titles or transitions. To add a background, click on the last button on the tool bar on the lower right hand side of the screen.

Scroll down to the background section Insert the title you want into your project by clicking and dragging between the clips.

To add a still photograph, click on the button on the toolbar that looks like a camera.

You will be presented with your iPhoto and Aperture libraries. Insert the still photograph you want into your project by clicking and dragging between the clips.

Inserting a Title Select the “T” on the toolbar on the right side of the screen. Your choices of titles will appear underneath.

Depending on the theme you have chosen, you will get different title choices. Insert the title you want into your project by clicking and dragging between the clips.

When you select the title, a screen comes up and you can select the background for your title.

Each title has different fonts, click in the title and type the text you want to insert.

You can click the “Play” button on the title screen to preview the slide.

The title will appear as a blue bubble above a blank frame.

If you want the title to appear over a still photograph or background, click the edge & drag it over the clip.

Inserting Maps Maps are a new feature in iMovie ʼ09. Maps allow you to insert an animated map into your video. You can specify the start and end of trip. You can insert an animated map by clicking on the background button on the toolbar.

Applying Effects to Clips Select the clip you want to add an effect to. Click on the gear wheel in the lower left hand corner of the clip. Select “Clip Adjustments”

Select the menu in the middle of the pop up window.

Select the effect you wish to apply.

Recording a Voice Over Select the clip you want to record over.

Click on the microphone on the toolbar in the middle of the screen

There will be a 3 second countdown. Begin speaking, then click the microphone when you are done.

The voiceover appears underneath your clip.

Sharing Your Movie Once your movie looks the way you want it to, you are ready to share it! You can export to a .mp4 movie, which will play on any computer, upload it to either YouTube or your MobileMe Gallery, or export into a file that you can open and further edit with Final Cut!

Use the project presets in the menu that comes up.

Be sure to name your project something that is meaningful!
