WHY Students Should Be Coding

S

Why students should be coding

Voices from the Top

S President Obama: “…the next language students will need to

learn…”

S Bill Gates: “Learning to write programs stretches your mind, and

helps you think better, creates a way of thinking about things that I think is helpful in all domains.”

S Stuart Silberg (VP-Hotels.com): “…schools also need to educate

children on the advantages of learning those skills and how to implement them in both business and day-to-day life…Schools need to educate pupils that technology is much more than just Java, HTML5 and Excel – it gives them the tools to turn any idea into reality.”

HOW Students Should Be Coding Coding to Learn vs. Learning to Code

S

What does “Coding to Learn” Mean?

S When students learn to code, they learn to code S When they “code to learn” they learn much more S Learning by Design approach (ie: Engineering Design Process)

S Coding to Learn begins with a problem that needs to be addressed S Students work to find a solution, using a conceptual approach S Students learn vital & transferable skills

Phases of App Development

Phases of App Development

S Ideation Phase: “What’s the problem?” S Planning Phase: “How should the app be organized?” S App Building Phase: “How should the app function?” S Content Building Phase: “What should the end user know?” S Testing Phase: “How can the app be better?”

App Development = Skills Development

S

“Vital and Transferable” Skills Standards:

S

Creativity and innovation

S

Communication and collaboration

S

Research and information fluency

S

Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making

S

Digital citizenship

S

Technology operations and concepts

Creativity and innovation

S How is the app’s content logically interrelated? S What is its connection to my class, school,

community, world?

S Why is my app relevant? S How can I make my app S engaging? S unique?

Collaboration and Communication

S

Am I effectively communicating with… S S

My team? My audience?

S

What is my role/what are my roles?

S

What is our system of “checks and balances?”

S

How do we ensure that every team member is valued?

Research and information fluency & digital citizenship

S Is my app addressing a need? S Are my sources viable? S Am I giving due credit to my

sources?

S Am I making the information

accessible?

S Am I using proper form?

Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making

S Questions, questions, questions… S What’s important? S How is it arranged? S Which templates should I use? S How do I get my audience to care? S How do I fix things?

Technology operations and concepts

S How are the app’s parameters set? S How does the CMS work? S Which templates are best suited to the development? S Why does the app BEST serve the purpose? S How much time is spent “offline?”

Collaboration: Roles & Responsibilities

S Architect-Maps the relationship between different screens within

the app and ensures their map has been fully created by the Builder and filled with content by the Creator

S Builder- In charge of building the app within the CMS and

ensures all buttons and screens are functioning properly

S Creator- Creates and gathers content, such as text, pictures, video

and websites and works with the Architect to determine where content goes in the app, delivers content to the Builder

Each Lesson Includes:

S Formal Lesson Plan S Sessions meant to provide equal parts instruction/activity S Annotated PowerPoint presentation S 12-point Rubric S Resources (including background articles, templates,

tutorials, etc.)

Lesson 4: App Design

S

Lesson 4: App Design

Objectives S

Introduce concepts such as splash screen, logo, marketing, and branding

S

Understand how color is used to emote specific emotions in marketing

S

S

Essential Questions S

How do considerations of elements such as logo design and color help make a mobile app more appealing/marketable?

Understand how decisions regarding appropriate color are important to considering a brand

S

What is the purpose of the splash screen?

Create a custom logo, app design

S

How are custom designs created?

Making Your Mobile App Personal AND Popular Elements of Mobile App Design

S

What is the “Splash Screen”?

S First screen seen by the mobile app

user S Think of it as the “cover of a book” S Remains visible for just seconds, while

content uploads

Developing a Theme: Consider Color

Creating a Custom Splash Screen Name, Color and Logo

S

Step 1 (Mac): Start with a Template

S

1. From the CMS, open your app and select the “Design Settings” option under the cog wheel icon (upper right, see image below)

S

2. On the insert window that appears, click the box for “Change/Edit Project Images”

S

3. A set of options will appear. Under the iPhone option, select “Download Sample File.” A folder named “iPhoneSampleImageSet” will appear in your “Downloads” folder and/or at the bottom of your browser window.

S

4. Open the folder (it will automatically unzip), then open the “4.0-inch” sub-folder to reveal all of the files and sub-folders…
