The configurations

The single girder overhead travelling crane The single girder overhead travelling crane with a load capacity of up to 16,000 kg built with components from STAHL CraneSystems is flexible and adaptable. This permits expedient, cost-effective material flow solutions to be built even in low-ceilinged or small buildings. Different installation forms make full use of the available space. The crane bridge girder is individually adapted to the ceiling construction. The single girder overhead travelling crane travels on crane runway rails welded onto the top flange of the crane runway beam. A cantilever crab with extremely short headroom or a chain hoist in extra short headroom trolley design can extend the height of lift still further. The single girder overhead travelling crane is normally equipped with a festoon cable system along the crane bridge and control pendant. Radio remote control is also possible as an option. When the crane is to be used indoors in dry conditions a conductor line along the crane bridge is a further possibility. In this case the signals for controlling the crane are always transmitted by radio. There is no need for bulky cable loops and cable trolleys along the crane bridge, resulting in even better utilisation of space.

Crane technology I The configurations

The double girder overhead travelling crane It’s a reassuring feeling to know that technology from STAHL CraneSystems is used wherever safety and cost-effectiveness are in demand. Whether in concrete factories, in the motor industry or in power stations. The double girder overhead travelling crane is a highperformance crane with a load capacity up to 160,000 kg and spans up to 32.5 m. Heavy, unwieldy loads can be handled safely and precisely. Off-standard installation variants adapt and integrate the double girder overhead travelling crane into a planned or existing building. The power supply is the same as for a single girder overhead travelling crane. A wide range of equipment packages increase productivity and safety in day-to-day work. Components from the condition monitoring programme monitor loads and record operating conditions. Additional requirements such as stepless speeds, higher crane travel speeds, maintenance platforms on the crane bridge, walkable crabs or cabs for the crane operators can all be constructed with crane components from STAHL CraneSystems.

The single girder suspension crane If space is tight, the single girder suspension crane is just right for you. It requires only minimal space and runs on the lower flange of the crane runway, mounted on roof beams or directly on the ceiling. Thus the whole width of the building can be used. The distance between the load hook and the side walls is extremely short, guaranteeing optimum space utilisation. The load capacity of the basic versions of single girder suspension cranes from STAHL CraneSystems extends up to 10,000 kg. Higher load capacities can be built on request. A further characteristic of this crane is the possibility of connecting suspension cranes in different bays by means of a crane interlock. The hoist complete with its load travels onto the neighbouring crane and can reach any desired point in the network. It is also possible for it to travel onto a spur runway.

Double girder overhead travelling crane for five dimensions STAHL CraneSystems’ engineers developed for handling paper reels in a 11 m wide factory shop a double girder overhead travelling crane with two SH wire rope hoists of 9,000 kg load capacity each. The paper reels must be rotated horizontally when they are transferred. The hooks also move close to the end of the crane runway where they take the paper reels over from a neighbouring crane runway. The motion sequence and the difficulty of integrating the cranes into the existing building meant that this task could not be accomplished with standard cranes. The independently acting load hooks of the wire rope hoists are set to the spacing required for each operation by means of a rail with electrically powered drives. The double-grooved rope drums ensure true vertical lift. The rotatable frame in which the hoist travel rail is mounted can be moved along the crane bridge and thus forms the crane‘s trolley. A total of five dimensions are available for the spatial movement of the hooks: lifting, cross travel, long travel, rotation and hook spacing. The system is radio remote controlled and also equipped with an obstacle avoidance feature to prevent it colliding with obstructions and neighbouring cranes, and is equipped for high ambient temperature. The condition monitoring package including load spectrum memory records all operating conditions. This is important for later inspection and maintenance.

Crane technology I The engineering

Off-standard portal cranes on a bridge Our engineers, in collaboration with a local crane building partner, designed two off-standard portal cranes for the complete renovation of one of the most important bridges over the Danube in Budapest, Hungary. As the bridge had to remain open for trams and buses during the whole construction period, it was not possible to transport building materials to the construction site by lorry. The components were supplied from the dock which runs along the riverbank below the bridge. From here the cranes lifted the steel and concrete sections, which are 13–14 m in length, onto the bridge by means of a 5 m long overhang beam and transported them into the correct position without rotating them. To permit this, the dimension between the portals was increased to 18 m on the overhang beam side. The specially reinforced cross beam in a welded latticework ensures the necessary stability in spite of the wide spacing. Each portal crane covered one half of the bridge with a 320 m long crane runway. One of the greatest challenges was distributing the 16 t load so that the bridge could withstand the stresses. A further difficulty was that the north and south sides of the bridge have a 1° bend and a gradient of up to 3 % so that conventional portal crane undercarriages were excluded from the outset. The remedy was found in four specially manufactured undercarriages from STAHL CraneSystems. Each of these units consists of four driven wheels which can swivel both in pairs and jointly. They operate safely and reliably even with 16 t rated load, 3 % gradient and a wind speed of 50 km/h. Two SH wire rope hoists were used as lifting apparatus, the cranes were radio-controlled.

The facts „„Off-standard

portal crane with 5 m overhang beam, 18 m dimension between portals and 15 m lifting height „„Two low-maintenance SH wire rope hoists each with 16 t load capacity Portal crane undercarriages with „„ four driven wheels each, with a maximum wheel load of less than 5 t „„Radio remote control of the cranes

85 t inspection crane at an altitude of 2000 m above sea level In collaboration with a specialist for power station crane systems, STAHL CraneSystems supplied a new inspection crane for the expansion and modernisation of the Grimsel hydroelectric power plant, Switzerland. Previously an old 135 t crane had carried out maintenance work on the turbines. However the maximum height of lift of this winch was not sufficient for the erection and subsequent maintenance operations on the new machine which is set at a lower level. A cost-effective modification of the old hoist within the narrow window of only one week was not practicable. STAHL CraneSystems therefore quoted the installation of new, state-of-the-art hoisting technology, an SHW winch with a load capacity of 85 t, on an additional crane bridge. An auxiliary hoist for erection work and transporting smaller loads, that could be used for working on the backflow valve in the gallery 40 m lower down, was also requested. For this work, an SH wire rope hoist with 10 t load capacity and a relatively high auxiliary hoisting speed was planned. Both hoists have a maximum lifting height of 40 m. With the aid of the customised control, the crane can be controlled particularly accurately and precisely. Travel and hoisting speeds are in the region of a few millimetres per second. In spite of the difficult prevailing conditions, the modification was carried out according to schedule. After only one week, erection was completed, the supply cables laid and the customer‘s acceptance test passed without any problems. The old and the new crane work in parallel with their own crane bridges on the existing crane runway.
