COVENANT DISCIPLES BIBLE COURSE - Bible Course Study Guide

SG1 Bible Course … Vision & Overview. Vision & Overview …

The Covenant Disciples Bible Courses primary objective is to lay a sound foundation in the Word of God, through the practical application of God’s Word and Principles to everyday life. How? What does it mean to practically apply God’s Word in our lives! Living it … God Himself must be real to us and alive in us … in our lives, .. not just His Word, or just His promises and principles! In other words … A Relationship, … a personal, real relationship, with God Himself!

Relationship … Many Bible Courses and Training Institutions have and are providing much knowledge, good knowledge of God’s Word, but in too many cases it is and remains merely head knowledge. Jesus made this statement … But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. --- Matt 6:33 Telling us clearly to … seek first a relationship with God, … before you seek to apply His principles to your life and needs! seek first your place in His presence, … before Him, where you can hear His Voice and not just know His Word! Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. --- Deut 28:1 and Jesus speaking to the Church (His own body, us) said this … Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. --- Rev 3:20 Relationship. A relationship in which God’s presence and hearing His voice, … is as important, if not more important, than just knowing His Word, … and trying to live by His Word alone. Knowing this, knowing the need for us to have a real, … living personal relationship with Him, with the Father and with the Holy Spirit, Jesus said this to us also …

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. --- John 15:4-8 It is not just about getting to know all there is to know about the Bible, … or some deeper revelation, but it is about a closer, more personal relationship with the Word Himself, … on a sound foundation in the Word of God, on which that true relationship with God can be built. A relationship based on His purposes and plans for man (for us), … for without a relationship with God and the right foundation, Bible knowledge can be very dangerous and counter productive.

Overview … The Covenant Disciples Bible Course is specifically aimed at training and equipping pastors, leaders and students for a victorious life and effective ministry. These practical, simplistic yet powerful Bible Courses have been especially prepared to equip pastors, teachers and students, and to provide them with a tool with which to teach others (where they live, in the mission field or wherever they minister). The Church and that particularly includes its leaders, need to practically build a real and personal relationship with God … in covenant with Him, … that the reality of salvation and all that Christ has done for mankind, can be shown to the world, if the Body of Christ is truly going to get to know Jesus personally, as they should! The Covenant Disciple Bible Courses are available to all, to pastors, pastor groups & Church groups everywhere, for personal or group study, ministry or bible schools.

Study & Training … The CDBCourse is a self-paced, self-study program, thereby also allowing students and pastors in remote areas to be trained & benefit from the Bible Courses. We do however encourage group study at all levels, … in the first place to encourage covenant & fellowship, particularly between pastors & leadership groups. … and also to foster the practical application of the Word in our lives.

Timing & method… The suggested time scale is to do 1 or 2 lessons per week, to allow for the practical application, and the building of a real relationship with God, which is the prime purpose. At the end of every or the beginning of the next lesson, an open book test/review of the previous lesson is completed and handed in for evaluation, (and certification) Remember, the purpose is not to test knowledge but understanding and application.

Be diligent (study) to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. --- 2 Tim 2:15 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity." But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. --- 2 Tim 2:19-21 That means, being a disciple (of Jesus) yourself … And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him. --- Luke 2:40 Jesus was willing to be discipled, so that He could disciple His disciples An example that we also should follow … as the Apostle Paul said … Imitate (follow) me, just as I also imitate (follow) Christ. --- 1 Cor 11:1 And if you are going to be a successful … … strong in spirit and filled with God’s wisdom, then imitate Jesus … And let the Word of God, through the anointing of the Holy Spirit … … teach and prepare you!

Where to start … Where should you start? There is only one place to start … … with God Himself! Start by getting into communication with God (in prayer) … and by drawing from God … through the Holy Spirit! The Apostle Paul prayed this prayer over the saints in Ephesus … … a prayer that is also the foundation to this ministry … and … … should be the foundation your ministry and your studying of the Word A prayer that every minister and teacher should pray, every day … Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power (Holy Spirit) which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, --- Eph 1:15-21 Then the next step is easy … … Study the Course Guide. and … … Study the courses themselves!

SG2 Introduction. Primary objectives

Covenant Disciples Bible Course’s primary objective is to lay a sound foundation in the Word of God. It is not just about getting to know all there is to know about the Bible, or some deeper revelation, but it is about laying a foundation on which we can build a true relationship with God, based on His purposes and plans for man (for us), for without a relationship with God and the right foundation, Bible knowledge can be very dangerous and counter productive. On a good foundation, knowledge can be placed and built upon, and revelation will be sound. It is the aim of the Covenant Disciples Bible Course to provide the vehicle for laying that essential foundation and simultaneously providing practical application thereof, from where a wonderful walk with God, in His full revelation, can begin. So often people get hold of a great teaching tape, see a video or listen to good teachings at a convention, they get excited about what they have heard and then act upon that. Yet, more often than not, having tried to put into practice what they have heard, they find that it does not work the way they expected or how it was ministered on that tape or video. Why? It is not because the teaching was not good … … and certainly not because the Word of God is at fault, but it is simply because there is not enough of a foundation on which that information or that teaching could stand. What then happens is, people get disappointed, disillusioned and even hurt They blame God or the Church, and worse, turn away from the Word. If that happens …….

we have failed, and failure is not our aim.

Our aim is

success and victory in God and through His Word.

…….

Jesus spent three years teaching His disciples, laying a solid foundation in their lives, a foundation on which He could build His Church. Our objective therefore should also be to build a foundation, the kind of foundation that Jesus laid … … stories and parables out of life, … practical examples, simple yet powerful!

Without a foundation we are like the Christians of Corinth. I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; --- 1 Cor 3:2 Any teaching, as good as it may be, unless it is based on a solid foundation … … is of little benefit and most often only causes confusion. Covenant Disciples Bible Course

5

Study Guide

God’s plan however, is that everyone be skilled in the Word, not just knowing the Word but also to be able to apply His Word in their lives … … knowing the promises … … and the benefit they should derive through His Word! For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. --- Heb 5:13-14 In order to have success and victory in God ... … we need to build up the people in the Word … but … … unless it is done on a good foundation in the Word … there will be no success or victory! So … … let’s have that glass of milk together (and lay a good foundation) then let’s build on that foundation … … and feast on the solid food of the Word … together!

Where do we start … We start by getting to know God and by building a relationship with Him. Why? So that we start to know and most importantly … hear His voice … … that our senses (our will and emotions) be exercised … … that we are able, through Him, to discern both good and evil … as God promised and in fact expects us to be able to do!

Ability and victory … That is what we all want … … and only a sound foundation in God’s Word … … getting to know His will and His purposes … will help us to enjoy just that.

We are different … one of a kind! In our everyday life, and in particular in our walk with God … … the one thing that separates us from all other created beings, … is our ability ……. … and our right …… to make decisions for ourselves. Together with this ability and right, comes a responsibility, … the responsibility……. to have to make a decision. And as with everything with God, He makes it clear and easy for us: "I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; --- Deut 30:19

Covenant Disciples Bible Course

6

Study Guide

What a choice, what a responsibility. Yet, as awesome as the responsibility is … … so wonderful also is that privilege. We can know that if we choose to go God’s way … … it is the way of life! That God stands behind our decision … … and that He will help and guide us! A man's heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps. --- Prov 16:9

Isa. 52:12 Isa. 58:8-12

Life is all about decisions … … so use that wonderful privilege to help others … … by laying a sound foundation in the Word … to help them grow to where they can make the right decision … … based on a relationship with God … … and a sound knowledge of His Word … that removes the awesome-ness of the responsibility.

Make the decision to lay a foundation in the Word of God … And … Make the decision to build thereon …..

Advanced Principles and Studies

In-depth Word studies on specific topics and subjects.

The Advanced courses follow on the Foundation courses, and as mentioned before, … the success of and the value derived by the student in studying God’s Word … … lies in building on a good foundation … Therefore it is imperative to have a solid foundation to build on … … and to continually refer back and refresh the truths already learnt. The Advanced Principles and Studies give a deeper insight into God’s Word and His principles and concepts, whilst also exposing the underlying truths with regard to God’s purpose and character. It deals with God’s plans for man since before creation, God’s plans for us, today, that is, victory and prosperity in every area of our life. We are overcomers in Christ. Victory and success is what God has in mind. On a sound foundation … based firmly on His Word … … where hope, success and victory can be built.

The Studies... Each of the Advanced Courses or studies deals with individual themes or Biblical Principles, and are in-depth studies highlighting … … the principles and the Word base behind each principle … … weighing them up against God’s Word, His will and His plans … and … … practically apply every principle to life … the way God planned it!

Each Advanced Course is made up of four units … … with each unit made up of a Word based teaching … … and fully referenced to scripture … Each unit also has a Practical Application in which the study and scriptures are specifically applied to practical Christian learning and as a resource for training and teaching!

Advanced Courses outline… At present there are three Advanced Principles and Study Courses … Although it is not absolutely mandatory to follow the Advanced courses in numerical order, and the school, rector or teacher may decide to change the order … … this is however not recommended as certain courses, such as the Gifts of the Spirit should follow on the Anointing, and should not be done before the anointing, as the principles dealt with in the Anointing lay a foundation for properly understanding the Gifts of the Spirit.

Practical - Course procedure. A sure foundation … Jesus said … … without a sure foundation … … whatever you do will not stand … "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. Now everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall." --- Matt 7:24-27 Building on a sure foundation … on the rock … as Jesus said, means … … to build on God’s Word … … to do things God’s way, according to His principles! But … … as Jesus also pointed out … Just knowing God’s Word and not doing it … … will be of no benefit to you! for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; --- Rom 2:13 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. --- James 1:22 When God created man, He did not give man a finished world … … but He gave man the ability and empowerment … … to continually improve on his situation and his world … Then God blessed (barak) them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." --- Gen 1:28 God empowered, enabled (barak) man by putting in man His ability … … not just to feed his stomach … but to build computers, fly to the moon etc … Yet … … without gaining wisdom and understanding how to apply that knowledge … … man will not be the conqueror God made him to be! Therefore God goes on to encourage us through the Apostle Paul, saying … Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. Be diligent (study) to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. --- 2 Tim 2:14-15

SG4 Implementation ... General Instructions …

The Study Guide application is made up of …

The Basics … The importance of learning and teaching, … a background to sound teaching and study method! … hints on how to open up God’s Word to others … … and successfully discipling students.

The Foundation Course Application… Supplementary teaching to the Foundation Courses … … opening up the secret to building a relationship with God … … the foundation to man’s character … … recognising God’s plan and His ways!

The Advanced Course Application… Supplementary teaching to the Advanced Courses … … opening up the secret to God’s principles … … the foundation to practical application of God’s principles … … teaching God’s plan and His ways. … preparing others for ministry!

General Instructions … All instructions, notes and teachings MUST be thoroughly studied, … and taught to all (students, teachers or assistants). Do not take any short cuts or quick methods … … simply follow all the teachings and instructions as they are written. There are no shortcuts to laying a sound foundation, … nor are there any shortcuts to heaven! Remember … … What is not part of you and what is not alive in you, … What you are not living yourself, … What you have not applied in your own life! YOU CANNOT TEACH OTHERS…! If it is not your intention to live God’s Word … … to personally live God’s principles and teachings (in this course) … STOP NOW…! You will not benefit from what you have not received and acted upon, yourself, … and you cannot impart to anyone what you have not benefited from yourself! As Paul so rightly said … Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. --- 1 Cor 11:1

A Living … example! Jesus made this important statement … By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. John 15:8 A true disciple, minister of God, or for God … … is a disciple of Jesus’ who bears much fruit … And … A true disciple of Jesus’ is someone, … who himself has learnt from the Master (Jesus), … who is living the Word himself, … who has received from Jesus and thus has something to give! Jesus in teaching on Life, discipling and ministry, said this … "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. --- Matt 5:13-16

Is that your heart? Then study the following instructions, teachings and aids … well! … make them part of your life … so that you can be part of making them part of someone else’s life!

SG5 Study Basics ...

Covenant Disciples Study Courses The underlying principle of all study … … is to remember the what and why you are studying! Therefore … … the one element to stress, and to continue to stress, is … … remember the foundation! … remember the reason! Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. --- Prov 29:18 Always bear… in mind … … why you are doing what you are doing! As God says to us … My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; --- Hosea 4:6 What is the reason for studying the Bible? … to get to know God, His principles and His ways! For without that knowledge God says … …”My people are destroyed!” And as God also said in Prov. 29:18 … “Where there is no vision, the people perish!” If all we are accumulating is knowledge … … without knowing why we are accumulating it … … or what to do with it … all that knowledge will be of little or no value to us! What does that mean? We need to know where we come from and where we are going! What is the foundation or reason for our lives? … a relationship with our creator … God! God created us in His image and likeness … … to be like Him … so that He could have fellowship and a relationship with us! Yes … God made us like Him, in His personal image and likeness … … so that we could have a personal relationship with Him … A personal relationship with God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit! That is both the beginning point … … and the goal of Covenant Disciples Bible School … And it should also be the goal of every teacher and student! Covenant Disciples Bible Course

Jesus made this uncompromising statement … “Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. Now everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall." --- Matt 7:21-27 Why did Jesus say that? Jesus was teaching us about why we do things … … about why we study God’s Word … And He was saying to us, that … … just knowing about God … … and even expecting His Word to work in our life … … without a personal relationship with God Himself … Is like someone who builds his house on the sand … … it will not stand! In fact Jesus very specifically said in v.23 … "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you!’ I never knew you! The Greek word ‘knew’ used here, means … an intimate relationship … … the type of relationship that a husband and wife have … … the very closeness of sexual intercourse … That close … that intimate … that personal ! That is the kind of relationship that God wants to have with us … … and is the kind of relationship that God wants us to have with Him. And that is the kind of relationship that Covenant Disciples Bible Courses endeavours to guide ministers and disciples (students) into … … through learning and applying God’s Word … totally relying on our personal teacher …the Holy Spirit!

Basic principles Understanding is important … … therefore all the Bible references are also important … … and should all be read … Also, it is good to encourage students to make a habit of reading the entire chapter .. … and not just the given reference. This study method gives a deeper insight into the subject matter … … through a broader background … … thus avoiding misinterpretation … and … ... helps to prevent the danger of basing a doctrine on a single verse! Wherever possible … students should have access to a concordance. God wants everyone to have wisdom and understanding … My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you, So that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; --- Prov 2:1-6 One of the major purposes of the Bible courses is to highlight parts of God’s Word, … to help search for those hidden treasures … (revelation) … and to guide the students on the way to understanding … and help them find the knowledge of God. (not about God) Understand this one thing ….. For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding --- Prov 2:6 We are studying God’s Word, His will and purposes, … so we look to Him for understanding and wisdom … as God told us … If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. --- James 1:5 It is all about building a relationship with God … … and thereby getting to know God and His Word. Remember … God wants to commune with you and He wants you to understand …. … So ask of Him and expect to receive an answer. Make a habit yourself and teach your students … … to truly and fully rely on the Holy Spirit … Let Him do what God sent Him to do … To be your teacher … But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. --- John 14:26 Covenant Disciples Bible Course

Practical Rules … Rule 1 If anyone does not understand … let him ask ! The one thing that we are encouraged to do again and again in the Bible is … … ASK!

James 1:5 Col. 1:9

So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. --- Luke 11:9-10 Covenant Disciples Bible Course is not primarily about just getting to know all there is to know about the Bible, but is about laying a foundation in the Word of God and the practical application thereof in our lives. There are many references to scripture, all of which must be read … … because it is on the Word itself that we lay our foundation … … and not on what anyone says about the Word of God.

Rule 2 God is a personal God … …and He wants above all that we have a personal relationship with Him … … a relationship which we can only have by getting to know Him. How do you get to know Him? By getting to know His Word, and its practical application or meaning in our lives, By getting to know how God sees you, what He thinks of you, and what He expects of you, Where do you start? In His Word! So train yourself and your students not to skip or just scan any of the scriptures or teachings … … major on the practical application of every concept … to life, … your own life first, then in the lives of others. If you or someone you are training does not understand the meaning of a particular verse or its application in life, to refer to Rule 1 … Ask! Remember … Unless you have a revelation of God’s Word yourself … … unless you understand what God is saying and can apply it in your life … You cannot teach that principle or concept to someone else! That is the principle reason why God gave us the Holy Spirit as our teacher … For … … the Holy Spirit understands God and God’s principles … … He has a personal revelation of all of God’s Word … Because … … He is God! Trust Him … and let Him be your teacher!

Rule 3 Honesty, in particular … being honest with yourself! And this applies to everyone … … Students and in particular … teachers! James, the brother of Jesus said this to us … My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. --- James 3:1 That is not to scare anyone away from being a teacher, … but an incentive to be the kind of teacher, … who does not rely on his own ability and knowledge … But … … being the kind of teacher who knows and accepts his or her limitations … … and who relies fully on the Teacher, the Holy Spirit … to be the teacher and the guide to others … … as God wills, through you! If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. --- James 1:5-8 We do not know everything … … and compared to what God knows, we know nothing. You cannot fool God, He knows it all … … You can only fool yourself.

God has already answered every question. The fun in life is … finding those answers, because those are … the treasures in life.

No question is ever a stupid question! People who do not ask questions … get no answers! Having an enquiring mind, is God's idea … My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me … --- Hosea 4:6 "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. --- Luke 11:9-10 Why does not God just tell me everything I need to know? God made you special and He gave you the right to make decisions for yourself, and He will therefore also not force His will upon you. Sure God wants us to know everything, and He will do everything possible so that we can find it all out, but we have to open the door for Him to come in and speak into our lives. God is gentle and will never push in. Covenant Disciples Bible Course

SG6 Foundation Course Supplement ... Foundation Principles …

The two Foundation Courses cover the basic principles of Christian doctrine … … in a clear and practical way … with the specific purpose of laying a foundation for the rest of the Courses … … and indeed for any Bible study or training! Therefore do not be fooled by the simplicity of the teachings … But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God— and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— that, as it is written, "He who glories, let him glory in the LORD." --- 1 Cor 1:27-31 God is not complicated … … and once you understand God’s principles … the simplicity of God’s plan and God’s will for man … … will become clear … and easy to follow and apply in your life!

The Foundation Studies... The two Foundation Courses each have a theme as an underlying study … … foundation concepts on which all Christian study and life should be based Relationship, Character and Covenant Unless man understands exactly who he is … … how and why he was created and put on earth … God’s plan, His will and His principles … … will never make much sense to him … God made man special … a ruler … … and since the Garden of Eden man has endeavoured to exert his authority … but as we have found out … … man has not accomplished that goal … Why? Because man does not really know who he is … … and man does not know God’s heart or His plan! Man does not know the Relationship that God created him to have … … and man has not developed the character God put in him! God created us in His likeness and with His characteristics … … with the express purpose to have a covenant relationship with us … Relationship and character … are the foundation to our very lives … … and should also be the foundation to studying God’s Word! That is the reality of Ministry … Drawing from God Himself and … … giving to others what God placed inside of you! How do you attain to that position, that ministry for God? By building a relationship with Him … … studying His Word and spending time in communion with Him (prayer) By developing the character and characteristics He placed in you … … living out that relationship and drawing from God

1.1.1 Man … in God’s image and likeness! God’s intention was that man should be different to all else in creation … … just like Him … in His image and likeness … … created above everything else! What does it mean, being created in God’s image and likeness? How and why did God make man different and special? Man … in God’s image and in His likeness … And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion … … over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. --- Gen 1:26 In Our IMAGE: (tselem) a phantom, illusion, resemblance; hence, a copy. 1.1.2 What is man…? David realized that God had made man very special … … different to everything else … and … … he wanted to know from God … … the fullness of what God made man to be … What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? --- Psalm 8:4 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You. --- Ps 139:17-18 God … … why is man on your mind? … why is your mind full of man? … why are you always thinking about man? God … … what is man that You personally visit him? … what is man that You take so much time for him? What is man that he is so special to God? What makes man special … … is the fact that God made him different … … special and above all else in creation!

1.1.3 Man is … Earth and Spirit! God not only made man in His image and likeness … God not only planned to have a relationship and fellowship with man … But … God also planned for man to live according to His image and likeness! Man’s makeup … What man is made of … … Man’s physical as well as his spiritual makeup … … is therefore of great importance … How did God set about making man? And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. --- Gen 2:7 …of the dust of the earth

…of the Spirit of God

Unlike the angels or other created beings … …God formed or shaped man out of the earth itself … Unlike all other created beings in existence … … God breathed His life, His spirit into man, and man became a living being!

Advanced Principles … The two Advanced Courses, consisting of 10 courses each, deal with individual biblical or spiritual principles, laws or doctrines … … in a clear and practical way … with the specific purpose of applying them daily to our Christian walk and ministry … to receive and teach them to others … … to make disciples, who in turn can teach and disciple others … As important as the basic principles are … and … … as important the advanced principles are … … without a practical knowledge of Spiritual Principles … The devil will steal from you, hinder and even stop your ministry! As the Bible warns us ... Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. --- 1 Peter 5:8 How will we become vigilant? … through studying God’s Word and His principles … and … … through learning how to apply those principles in our lives … … and in our circumstances … Remember … Having a powerful weapon … but not knowing how to use it … … is more dangerous than having no weapon … and … … as useless as having no help! Paul said this to the Hebrews … For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. --- Heb 5:13-14 As necessary as milk is … it is limited in its nourishment … … in building strength, particularly against a relentless enemy … Yes the victory belongs to the Church … … but the Church must know her rights, strength and ability! So, not only should principles be taught … … but most importantly the application of those principles and laws … Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. --- 2 Tim 2:15

Principles and Application …

Jesus taught and ministered for three years on earth … … most of which time He spent teaching and preparing His disciples … If Jesus’ ministry is known for one thing … … it is for being simplistic and practical! Jesus did not spend hours theorising or teaching on doctrinal differences … In fact the Bible warned us against that … As I urged you when I went into Macedonia--remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. --- 1 Tim 1:3-4 Much rather … Jesus taught using practical stories or parables from life … … to illustrate and explain biblical principles … And not only were His teachings easy to understand, everyday examples … … but every one could be applied in the lives of those He taught … In fact every one of Jesus’ teachings challenged the hearers to respond … … which is why the religious leaders were so against Him … They knew He spoke the truth … … which challenged them … They also knew that everyone understood Him … … and that they could apply what they heard in their lives … But instead of responding to the truth … … they tried to catch Him out with interpretations of the law…

How did Jesus minister or teach? "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD." --- Luke 4:18-19 Jesus ministered and taught under the anointing of the Holy Spirit … And … … that is exactly the way we should minister and teach … In fact Jesus made sure that we could do just that … However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. --- John 16:13-15

Covenant Disciples Bible Course

The Apostle John confirms this, saying … But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. --- 1 John 2:27 But like everything with God … … God has planned and provided everything for us … but we have to believe it, act upon it and put it into practice …

How do we do that? How do we get to minister and teach under the anointing of the Holy Spirit? How do we draw from the Holy Spirit? Paul in the first chapter of Ephesians taught on knowing who we are … … what God has planned for us … and tells us that we were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise … Paul then goes on to teach us a most powerful prayer … … a prayer that will help us to walk in His anointing … … and minister under His anointing … A prayer that every minister and teacher should pray, every day … Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power (Holy Spirit) which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, --- Eph 1:15-21

Teaching or Discipling …?

Is there a difference? Not in material content … … but certainly in application and intention! Jesus did not have students … He had disciples … … who wanted to get to know Him personally … … who wanted to do for others what He did for them. That is what our aim should be … To make … … disciples for Jesus out of our students …

Disciple and Discipling…!

Disciple:

mathetes. a learner, a pupil. KJV-- disciple.

Discipling

matheteuo. to become a pupil, scholar, to disciple. KJV-- be disciple, instruct, teach.

A disciple is someone who follows another as a pupil in order to learn ... … to learn all that the one he is following knows, … to be able to do what his teacher does, or even greater, Jesus said … Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. --- John 14:12 And a disciple is someone who diligently applies, in his own life, the teaching or training that he is receiving. The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, tha t I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. --- Isa 50:4 Whilst teaching on the importance of the Word and of the receiving of the Word … in Mark 4 … right in the middle of His teaching, Jesus made this statement … If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath. --- Mark 4:23-25 If discipling and learning was that important to Jesus … … it should be as important to us … His disciples!

2.2

How does a disciple learn …? And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. --- Matt 4:19

A disciple learns by hearing what the teacher instructs, … seeing what the teacher does, and … … by going and doing what he has seen and heard. Jesus in His ministry on earth did that … and if He did so should we … Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. --- John 8:28 And the apostle Paul did that … Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ. --- 1 Cor 11:1 (ASV)

Receiving and acting … As a twelve year old boy, Jesus already listened and learnt … … and when the time was right … He went out and did! And Jesus discipled His disciples in the same way … After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. … And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. --- Luke 10:1-9 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. --- Luke 9:1-6

2.2.1

The result of discipling …!

The result of discipling should be … … that the disciple knows and does what the teacher knows and does. The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. --- Luke 6:40 Who is our example? … Jesus! What kind of results should we have? … The same as Jesus had! Jesus had only positive results … and so did His disciples … And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. --- Luke 10:17 And so should we! Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. --- John 14:12 A diligent disciple will flow in tremendous power and authority … … and will develop and grow in spiritual maturity.

Luke 10:17-20 Matt. 27:18-19 Luke 9:1

With the result that as disciples … … we will flow in the power and authority Jesus gave us. (Matt. 28:18-19, Luke 9:1) … to do the works Jesus did .. and more … … to do and accomplish what He gave us to do! (Mark 16:15-20)

The Character of a true disciple …

What should the character of a true disciple be? Mary and Martha’s response to Jesus’ visit gives us a very clear picture of what the character of a true disciple should be … Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. --- Luke 10:38-42 The underlying characteristic of a true disciple … is submission. … submission and willingness to receive instruction ... to be taught! … and to act on that instruction, whether or not it seems logical or practical! Jesus demonstrated that in the instructions He gave His disciples … The feeding of the 5000 from five loaves and two fish. … (Luke 9:12-17) … looked impossible, but they acted on His instructions and fed 5000. The fetching of the colt. … (Luke 19:29-32) … Would they let them have it? … but they obeyed and no one stopped them

3.3.1

Submission and authority … And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. --- Matt 8:5-10

The centurion understood authority … … He understood authority for he was a man UNDER authority. … He understood authority for he EXERCISED authority over those under him. … He understood authority for he RECOGNISED authority … And the centurion recognized that Jesus had authority over Satan … … and therefore He had authority over disease and circumstances.

Someone who does not recognize authority … and who is not under authority … … who is not under the authority of Jesus … and under the authority of His chosen leaders … … will never operate in the authority of Jesus Christ (in His name). Discipling and Disciples … Those who want to be teachers / disciplers … And those who want to be disciples whom Jesus can use … Need to be … … committed to operate in the authority of Jesus’ name … … be under authority themselves … … recognizing the importance of submission to God's appointed authorities.
