Wilderness Medical Training WMT Explorer courses equip travellers to remote, overseas wilderness and austere environments - whatever their activities - with medical skills beyond first aid that will develop their autonomy in being able to look after an ill or injured casualty while they recover or during evacuation.

Far From Help is an intensive 2-day foundation course that broadly covers common injury and illness conditions and includes the use of selected prescription medications (high altitude drugs, antibiotics and analgesia for example). Advanced Medicine is 4-days long and includes the Far From Help content (first half) and invasive training during the 2nd half. WMT training uniquely enables students to obtain selected prescription medications and supplies for a two year period from WMT’s pharmacy partners. Medications and invasive techniques are NOT for use in the UK. WMT course directors are experienced British expedition doctors. Explorer courses are not suitable for doctors.

WEMSI-International Wilderness First Responder - 6 days This is an intensive, ‘hands-on’ course in back-country and remote expedition medical care. It is a gold standard in training, and conforms to the Wilderness Medical Society’s Wilderness First Responder syllabus, which is widespread in the USA. Meets the requirements of MTUK and the BC. Designed for people working in the outdoors or going on expeditions who want to extend their basic first-aid. Wilderness Physician - 7 days A practical course teaching doctors to practice medicine in the back-country, in the dark, in the rain, over remote communications. It is delivered by doctors with a broad background in expeditions and rescue across the world. This course runs parallel to the WEMT course. For doctors who wish to take their skills anywhere in the outdoors, from rescue to recreation to expedition support.

Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician - 7 days Medical and trauma care in remote or severe environments. This training recognises that protocol based ‘first-aid’ care often fails in the wilderness. We focus on ‘principles not protocols’. Practitioners learn to make differential diagnoses and then provide care that is practical and advanced for both rapid and prolonged evacuation situations. Aimed at practitioners who have advanced first-aid skills and who will potentially be dealing with medical and trauma emergencies in any wilderness or back-country environment. Experienced Provider - 3 days Revisits the key skills and knowledge required to be an effective medic in a wilderness setting, including C-Spine evaluation and reduction of dislocations. In addition we will introduce realistic fluid replacement and pain control options. This course qualifies as a refresher for WEMT. If you are already WEMT trained and you wish to brush up or extend your skills then this is designed for you.

Paddle Sports Qualification Credentials

Leadership Pathway

Coaching Pathway

If your main focus is to develop performance, including being able to get out and paddle in great locations with the intention of progressing onto leading groups, then our qualification pathway will be of interest. Starting with the 2 and 3 Star ‘personal performance’ awards, it moves onto 4 and 5 Star ‘leadership awards’.

If your main paddling focus is to introduce people to paddling and help develop performance, then the coaching pathway may be what you are looking for. Newcomers to coaching awards follow a pathway through the levels and after this there is a choice of continuing to develop knowledge and ability.

Performance awards - 2 and 3 Star: The 2 Star award focuses on the basic paddling skills for canoeing and kayaking. It’s a pre-requisite for the UKCC Level 1 Coaching award and the 3 Star award can be accessed with or without the 2 Star and is discipline-specific. We offer the 3 Star award in White Water, Sea, Canoe, Surf, Freestyle and Touring.

BC (UKCC) Level 1 and 2 Coach award: Level 1 coaches can introduce paddlers to any type of kayak or canoe through the delivery of introductory sessions. Level 2 is about progressive sessions to develop performance and understanding, and you choose to be assessed in kayak, canoe or kayak and canoe. Training and assessment is involved with both options and candidates will need to complete an additional safety course for Level 1. Level 1 will be completed in a week and Level 2 will usually take up to a year, after completing the training course.

Leadership awards - 4 and 5 Star: These awards are discipline-specific and focus on personal performance, safety and leadership in moderate and advanced water conditions. Upon completion the paddler will be able to lead groups for clubs, friends or within a centre. A specific safety course is also required prior to progressing onto the assessment. We offer both 4 and 5 Star in White Water, Sea, Canoe and Surf, including the specific safety courses. We also offer 4 Star in Touring.

After Level 2 you have the option of progressing down a coaching and/or environment pathway. Coaching Development Pathway - BC (UKCC) Level 3 Coach award: Focuses on developing the Level 2 holder’s ability to coach and develop paddlers over a year-long programme in an individualised way that focuses on the learner’s needs. The course is discipline-specific and candidates are required to hold their 4 Star Leader award. The Level 3 programme involves a core training course, discipline-specific training and additional modules, along with working with a group of paddlers over one year to develop skills. Environment Specific Pathway - Moderate and Advanced Water Endorsement: Focuses on developing the Level 2 holder’s ability to work in a discipline specific environment in moderate and advanced water, ensuring they are able to deliver progressive sessions to assist other paddlers. Both endorsements include a training course, require logged coaching experience and and then assessment. Candidates are required to hold the 4 Star Leader award for the Moderate Water Endorsement and 5 Star Leader award for the Advanced Water Endorsement. It usually takes 1 to 2 years to complete these endorsements. We offer these in White Water, Sea, Canoe and Surf. Safety Courses Safety courses form pre-requisites for some of the leadership and coaching awards for those wishing to become safer on the water. Designed to be discipline and environment specific we offer safety courses for white water, surf and sea.
