INTRODUCTION TO FINNISH SOCIETY AND CULTURE, 2 ECTS, period 1– period 2

Course code: PLA-15017 Person(s) in charge Kimmo Ahonen ([email protected]) Objectives The students are introduced to the contemporary Finnish society and culture as well as its historical development. After completing the course, students will have basic knowledge of Finland's societal, cultural and economic background from thematically various perspectives. In addition, the students will gain understanding of the cultural and industrial specificities of the Satakunta region. The aim of the course is to help the student make most of their exchange period by an increased understanding of Finnish customs, culture and contemporary issues. Objectives: concentrating on presentations, phrases and vocabulary used in giving a presentation. Presentation details, such as: body language, voice, enthusiasm and dress. Presenting information such as figures, your place of work and your company. All students will deliver a presentation in the company of fellow students. Teacher and students will assess and give feedback on all given presentations. Aims: To build up students' self-confidence in using their spoken English and in coming to terms with speaking in front of an audience. Working on pronunciation, fluency and expressivity. The students create teams, write reflective essays related to the exercises and reading required during the course, and they also write a final reflective essay about their learning experience at the end of the course. For example, networks and databases involve massive amounts of data, and mining of useful information from data is an increasingly common challenge. By taking the course, the student learns the basic principles and terminology of data mining, knows the commonly used algorithms, and recognizes the typical challenges of processing large datasets. The course will introduce several application areas of data mining, including the principles of web search engines, recommendation systems, and web advertising. After completing the course the students are able to set up a Web GIS Server and a related geodatabase solution, to publish geospatial Web services and implement Web applications using these services on desktop as well as mobile platforms. Both open source tools and environments as well as commercial solutions (offered by ESRI) will be introduced. Person(s) in charge Kirsi-Mari Kallio ([email protected]) Objectives The course is based on practical examples and solutions of different areas of corporate finance in a case-based setting. After completing the course the student will have an understanding of practical solutions of different problems of corporate finance. S/he will also be able to critically evaluate the applicability of different financial theories and current scientific literature in real-life situations. The students will complete the course independently online according to the course schedule. Content The topics included are: bond and stock valuation, capital budgeting decisions, risk management, dividend policy, market behavior and financial statement analysis. Person(s) in charge Tuomas Pohjola, Russell Williams ([email protected]) Objectives The aim of the course is threefold: to enable participants to develop the ability to devise and implement effective marketing strategies in a competitive environment and, to demonstrate a high level of problem solving competence in analyzing strategic cases and, to function as competent team members. “The Marketing Game!” simulation requires teams to allocate duties amongst themselves, analyze the market and competitors through management reports, select target markets, and position the product to meet the demands of the target market. After completing the simulation, students search for alternative research information and compose an individual report on postmodern marketing thinking. Content The intensive part of this course is based on “The Marketing Game!” simulation, which is a competitive group activity where teams experience decision making under uncertainty in a simulated marketing environment. Teaching methods Individual studying 108 h during the period of which 16 h will be the intensive seminars.
