C. Course Description: Performance management is one of the main functions of the human resource management lifecycle in organization together with Recruitment & Selection, and Training & Development units that student have taken. This course provides a comprehensive understanding and explores the practices of performance management from the individual and team viewpoints. Both theoretical and applied perspectives are used to examine contemporary topics in managing employee performance including employee motivation, performance appraisal and the management system.

Learning Outcomes Understand and analyze organizational policies, procedure and practice relating to employee performance and reward management. Understand the theoretical and practical aspects of employee motivation within workplace context and apply this to explain and analyze policy development. Describe approaches to performance review and appraisal and understanding different forms of rater for performance appraisal and its uses. Able to develop a performance management system for a specific organization of student’s choice

F. Instructional Modes: The format of class will be variable, with the mixture of lectures, group discussion, experiential exercises and guest speaker where possible. Students are expected to actively contribute ideas, involve in group debates of related topics covered in each lecture section. Role play will be applied in the performance appraisal section so that student can experience the content and skills that need to conduct during the employee performance feedback.

H. Assessment Methods (Requirements for Completion of the Course): 1. Description of learning outcomes assessment 1.1 Participation in Class This assessment refers to the active participation of student’s case study group discussion in lecture sections. This assessment is not just reliant on attendance 1.2 Group Case Study Written Report Students will form into small groups of 2-4 students in week 2 of the teaching period to prepare for the report paper and group presentation. Each group is required to choose an existing organization, research, describe, analyze and evaluate its performance and reward management system. 2

The research report should highlight and evaluate the outcomes of the system in terms of meeting the organizations’ strategic, business, culture and value objectives. Recommendation for improvement should also be included. The group report will be submitted in Week 9 of the semester. Each group member will receive the same mark as the others. This paper is to be written as a Business Report and must include an executive summary, table of contents, and recommendations. The following is a format that can be utilized in this case study report: Executive Summary Table of Contents 1. Topic and Introduction 1.1 Objective of the Report 1.2 Research Methodology 1.3 Limitations 2. Describe, analyze and evaluation of Performance and Reward Management System 3. Conclusion and Recommendations 4. References 5. Appendices Guidance on this assessment item will be provided throughout the course 1.3 Group Case Study Presentation Groups present the findings of the case studies that were allocated in the written report to the rest of the class in week 10 & 11 of the semester. Style of presentation and presentation medium adopted by groups are their choice, however, audience engagement and discussion is highly encouraged and reflected in the overall mark. Workshops should be roughly 30 minutes plus question time. Each group member will receive the same mark as the others. 1.4 Final exam The final exam is a closed book test to assess the students’ understanding and application the theories presented throughout the lecture sections Please note that the exam includes the multiple choice questions and students will be required to analyze one case study. Students will not know before the examination what case study will be tested.
