PRESIDENT

Hello friends I hope that everyone is surviving this long HOT !!!! summer. This has been a difficult month for many of us with several families losing precious family members. Our hearts and prayers go out to them in these difficult times. Others are dealing with severe illness diagnoses in themselves or close family members. In times like these it is good to have family and friends to support and pray for you. That is one of the best things about CMSA, we have friends that care and pray. I want to thank everyone who prayed for me and for Donna the last couple of months while we have been dealing with my health issues. We appreciate the prayers, calls and visits while I was in the hospital. Let's continue to help one another in all the ways we can. This month has been an exciting month in many ways. We started our new Headliner Shows. It worked out that Cameron Newby would be in town and turned down a paying gig to spend time with his CMSA family. It was fortunate he could be here to headline our show. and we heard only good things about that show. Everyone I talked with said every entertainer did an exceptional job and Cameron was icing on the cake. Donna, Kevin, Laura, and I couldn't be here for the show because we had the NACMAI retreat and meetings. Man, we hated to miss that show, but we are going to have more great shows. Sept. 17th along with other talented entertainers, we have the beautiful and gifted Miss Emily Northcutt as Headliner. We are planning to have entertainers that are making music a big part of their future plans, to share their tremendous talent with us. To spotlight them for that one night and recognize their achievements and abilities. We have so many incredible entertainers that it will take a while to showcase all the deserving people, but that means we have more great shows coming up. We have already talked to a few of singers and they are excited about this new opportunity. We would also like to hear from you about comedy acts and other entertainment to give variety to our shows. We are listening and have several ideas in the works. You know what you like and want to see, so continue to let us know your suggestions.

S E P T E M B E R

We had a good meeting at NACMAI. Your President and VP discussed your concerns about the last Awards Show and other things that you asked about. (Donna and Laura had a few things to say too because several people had talked to them about problems). I want to assure you that NACMAI has already implemented changes to guarantee that this years problems will never be repeated. One of the changes is the purchase of two more computers to back up all the information for the competition scoring. They are working hard to insure every facet of the competition goes smoothly. We want to applaud them for all of the changes. The Best Is Yet To Come came to our theater in August and to Anita's church as well. We heard nothing but praise for these two shows. We appreciate their sacrifice and time to come and share their talent with us. Donna and I were disappointed that we were unable to go to either show due to my illness. Many of our singers are members in their association too and get to perform on their stage. As a matter of fact, Ginger Boles is a Female Vocalist of the Year Finalist, Laura Tatum, Vickie Lynn, Brenda Harris and Donna Fisher are all finalists for the Female Horizon Award. Congratulations ladies, great job. Lucas Ciliberti, Heather Martin, Cindy Martin are all finalists for awards there. They will have an Awards Banquet on the 25th of Sept. at Chateau on the Lake in Branson. It is a great meal and a fun evening and you get to dress up. The tickets are $48.50 for the meal and entertainment at a beautiful place. Call me if you are interested in attending so we can reserve your spot. Remember CMSA Gospel Show will be moved to Sept. 2 as CMSA will be participating in Mustang Western Days Sept. 9 from 7 - 10 PM, and Sept. 10 from 1 - 10 PM. Our Awards Show will be on Sept. 11 starting at 1:00 PM for sponsors and entertainers. Sept. 16 CMSA is having a benefit for Grand Blvd Baptist Church. Remember “Voice for the Cure” Sept 24th and 30th. , MARK YOUR CALENDARS Looking forward to great days John Fisher President

Coming next month: What are my benefits as a CMSA member? What has the 501-C-3 done for us?

I’ve been attending more shows lately in an effort to connect more with the entertainers and the audience members to see what areas I need to concentrate on when I present my workshops. Here are some observations that I’ll pass along that seem to have the most impact on the audience, sound man, and entertainers in general. #1: When you come out on stage, before you start to sing, say something into the microphone. Even if it’s just something benign like “how is everyone?” This gives the sound engineer a chance to set your vocal level at a decent starting point. So many times a singer will come out on stage, not say a word until they start singing, and they will either be so quiet they can’t be heard or they blow everyone’s eardrums because they are so loud. And the soundman takes the blame. So please say something when you come on stage. #2: This brings us to modulation. This is how loud or soft you are singing into the microphone. When you have a ballad you are doing there will be some soft parts in the song. You still need to put SOME power behind even the soft parts so you can be heard. The sound man can turn you up but the mic may squeal, which you don’t want to happen. That messes up the whole feel of the song. If the soundman turns you up in the soft parts, when you get to the belting part you’re going to blow a speaker out before he can get you readjusted. That’s not good for you, the audience, or the soundman. When you get to the power note…you know that great impressive note at the end…the tendency is to be really loud. Loud does not necessarily mean good! Pull the mic away from your mouth a couple of inches if you are prone to really strong power notes, or belting areas of a song. You get the feeling and the intensity across without injuring someone! If you are speaking into the mic, DON’T YELL! That’s hurts everyone and tends to make people feel like they need to defend their ears whenever you are on the mic. #3: Don’t be a no-show. George Jones had a reputation and was even given the nickname “No-show Jones” because he failed to show up for his concerts so many times. I know there will be times when you just can’t make a scheduled appearance: A death in the family; a sudden illness; a car accident on the way to the show. But if it’s a consistent thing you run the risk of being banned from singing at a certain venue ever again and it’s building your reputation of being unreliable. If being an entertainer is important to you, you need to fulfill the obligations you agreed to. If that’s not in your nature, to be a stand-up person, then maybe you shouldn’t be an entertainer. #4: Be considerate of others. If you are sick, make arrangements for a replacement. Don’t come and get your sickness on the mic to hand off to other singers. Some of us are in the business, it’s a little more than

just getting up and singing in front of a small group of friends and family. If we get sick, we can’t sing and that gets into our pocketbooks. Please consider what your actions will have on other people. #5: Enjoy what you are doing! If it’s not fun, it shouldn’t be done! If you are on stage only because your family wants you to do this, that’s not so much a good thing. You have to love what you do! The audience will pick it up and will either love you are not love you, depending on the vibes they get from your performance. So, think over these tips and put them into use and you will present a better performance and gain more and more fans as they see and hear you on that stage! Be sure to come to our next workshop for these and many other useful tips and tricks!

Until next time, Nancy B. The 2011 State Competition is officially over, and now we can look forward to the Awards Show on Sunday, September 11, 2011. You will receive your score sheets at t h e en d o f t h e Awa r d s Sh o w I have received so much positive feedback from the performers regarding the transition this year from three to five judges, and I believe this change created a more "wellrounded" evaluation of each performance. We had quite a few new contestants this year which was a welcome addition to our competition. I want to thank everyone who helped me before and during the competition: Kevin and Laura Tatum, John and Donna Fisher, Danny Barton for being the Emcee, Sherry Wilson for handling the CDs, Sherry Miller, Sandy Ashley, Lottie and Emily Northcutt for working at the Tally Table, Brian Anderson for running the sound, Trasy Barnett for helping me at the check-in table, and the Crabbs for always coming early and staying late to open and close the building, clean up the area, and run the snack bar. In addition, it is always wonderful to look up and see Danny Greigo volunteering to film each person's p e r f o r m a n c e . In addition, thank you also to Wendy Henry, Chery Tiller, Linda Erickson, Bobbie Doss and anyone that I may have missed. Thanks to those who worked at the front door handing out the voting ballots, selling cookbooks, etc. I hope I didn't leave anyone out, but if I did, it isn't because your help was not appreciated. hope to see everyone at the A w a r d s S h o w ! Ann Nelson, one of the judges for the competition is mourning the loss of her son Second Lt. Jered W. Ewy, 33, of Edmond was killed July 29 while conducting a dismounted patrol in Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit with an explosive device. Lt. Ewy leaves behind a wife, Megan and his 8 week old daughter, Kaya. Please pray for the Ewy family Teri Newby,

Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers presented to me at the CMSA show on 6th, and also the warm welcome and words of encouragement I received from so many of you. It was a wonderful show full of great entertainers who made it a fun evening for all of us who were there. I seldom have a chance to hear my grandson, Cameron, sing anymore so that was quite a treat for me too. I want to thank Mr. Greigo for taking a picture of me with my family with his wonderful camera. Because Cameron is so far away, we seldom get a chance to all be together anymore, and this photograph is something I will cherish. Again, thank you to everyone for your continu ed prayers on my behalf, they are much appreciated. Sincerely, Joye Young

Our 16 and Under Entertainers are amazing and are continuing to rack up awards not only in Oklahoma but other states as well. They are in the recording studios recording with outstanding well known performers, performing at charitable events, writing original songs, working hard to master various musical instruments, performing and participating as competitors in pageants, performing in Nashville on world famous stages and as well as at Oklahoma Opr;y’s as well as private venues. It is so great to see these youngsters blossom into accomplished entertainers. I think it is great that we are going to see some of these entertainers as our “Headliners!” Our headliners will be mentors for those youngsters that are beginning their quest as CMSA 17 and Under Group. It is true, CMSA is “Where Oklahoma Country Talent is Born” I am proud of our group!!!!\\Amanda Woodmansee

Rick was hard at work selling tickets for the Jan Barton raffle which was a big red missing bowl with cookie mix, snowflake cookie cutter and a wooden spoon. The second half started back up with Mallory singing “Giddy On Up.” Brittany followed playing her pretty blue guitar and singing “Love Story” and did a great job. Next Madison sang “Daddy’s Hands.” The little beauty queen Saylor came on stage in a new outfit. You needed to be there to see how cute she was singing “Flat on the Floor.” Aislynn looked like a little sweetheart as she sang “Cowboy Sweetheart” Ariel was dynamite singing “Rumor Has It? Joseph sang “Tomorrow” We drew for the Jan Barton Raffle and Mallory won the bowl. Joseph and Destiny performed a duet “Don’t You Want To Stay” followed by “Remember Me” Jerry Paige’s name was drawn for the entertainers only drawing but missed out on $12.50 because he was not in attendance. We had a great show. The 16 and Under Entertainers are growing up so fast. They all were great and had some really cute outfits. They all have come a long way and deserve all of our support and a big round of applause. I, Bobby Doss and many other members wish more people would support the 16 and Under Shows. Kevin as usual was great in the sound booth . We missed a lot of the regulars that were not able to attend. Maybe the heat will let up and we can all get back to normal. Emily Faith, a busy young lady over the past several months, with performances at multiple festivals and fairs across the state. In May she performed for the second year in a row at the Disabled American Veterans annual conference. It was a fun show for her with a 50’s theme and she performed a duet with Elvis. She also performed Oklahoma Educational Foundation National Young Readers Day at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman. The most fun part of that for her was that she got to meet Thunder from the OKC Thunder Basketball Team. In addition she has made appearances at the Ada McSwain Theater, the Poncan Opry, the Clinton Country Jamboree, and Johnnie High’s in Dallas. She has also performed the National Anthem at several Rodeos and at the National Junior College World Series Championship for the 3rd year in a row. She sand the National Anthem at the Redhawks. Emily has ventured into the world of pageants and proven to be quite the little Diva and now holds the title of Little Miss Oklahoma and the National American Miss Grand Talent Queen. She brought home several trophies that were bigger than her. Her sister Katie was crowned Miss Teen Oklahoma and the Beauty Winner for National American Miss as well. Emily was asked to join the Lifelight Christian Festival and performed in Bethany, Missouri in June. They had approximately 5000 people at the event and ran 3 stages. Emily opened the Gospel stage and was the headliner for the Kaleidoscope stage. She performed on the stage with Barbra Mandrels daughter-in-law Christy Sutherlin who is an amazing Christian artist. Sioux Falls, SD for Labor Day she will perform 2 sets at the Lifelight Festival there which is host to approximately 300,000 people with 6 stages running over the weekend. It’s very exciting to get to work with so many talented Christian Artist and such a positive fan base. Emily has also begun writing by using some of her own personal challenges and that of others for her own original songs. In preparation for the big Labor Day event Emily and I traveled to Nashville a few weeks ago for her to record her new CD “Faith’s in the Future” to be released at this event. The CD has 3 songs that Emily and I wrote as well as 3 additional original songs and 4 covers. Her producer PT Houston is a very talented man and has been in the business for over 30 years having worked with the Eagles early in his career and numerous other artists since. Her band members included Rich Redmond – Drummer for Jason Aldean, Tully Kennedy – Bass Guitar player for Jason Aldean, Charles Judge – Keyboard player who has recorded with numerous stars such as Carrie Underwood, Michael Spriggs – Acoustic Guitar player who worked with Eddie Rabbit for years and numerous other stars since, and Kerry Marx – Lead Guitarist for the Grand Ole’ Opry. All of these individuals were very professional and did an amazing job of working with Emily. It’s hard work for anyone to spend countless hours in the studio, especially for a kid.

Carol Jean Ross Those of you who didn’t make it to the Branson Gospel Praise Gathering Show on the 12th missed many blessings. What a great night! Unfortunately, the bus a/c had broken down and Sherry called into OKC to have some members come pick up folks that would be performing that night. So they’d had a very big day Friday all in all, but sang and played their hearts out for the Lord! This group is fond of our Oklahoma CMSA Gospel Praise Night group, and our singers that have been with them in Branson. Ginger Boles and John Fisher have been singing the longest with them (many years) and are just like part of their family! (We appreciate the food that is always available at the Cowboy Museum and Hall of Fame). Some of our performer son the show were Ginger, Laura Tatum, and Bobby Dannatt. The next night they gave another show at Riverlife Church in Moore, with Anita Walker singing the opening songs. It was as anointed as Friday night’s concert. Whew!! What a wonderful week end of Praise to the King. The OK CMSA Gospel Praise Night Show(19th) performers included singers, songwriters, and one or two who play an instrument. Our special guest, Sherman Andrus, has sung professionally all over the world. Now retired, he sings for the Lord all over the place. He grew up in Louisiana. Even after being in Hawaii for several years, he says he enjoys living here. His music warms your heart and blesses one and all. Greg Finch from Tennessee, dropped In and sang several for us! The rest of the line up on the program were some of our own anointed Gospel singers: John and Donna Fisher, Carol Jean Ross, Vickie Lynn Findley, George and Thelma Harrison, Anita Walker, Curtis Thomas, Marsha Springer, Chery Tiller, Emily Faith Sanders, and

Donna Mclaughlin. A show enjoyed by the great audience there! Keep coming out to support your CMSA Gospel Praise Night! It is an Uplifting evening full of music to honor the Lord. Carol Jean Ross CoChairman

Emily will now head back to the studio to record a Christmas CD that will benefit the Make a Wish Foundation. She is very excited about that project as she loves the kids she has meet through that organization and her goal is to raise enough money to give at least one child their wish. She will be helping out at a benefit for a little girl named Molly from Yukon that is battling cancer on September 15th at 7:00pm at the Yukon Fine Art’s Auditorium. Please come and help us to help this little girl and her family. Submitted by Shelly Sanders

CMSA’s first “headliner” show was kicked off 8-62011 with Donna Marie at the helm. A variety of entertainers ranging in ages from 10 and up filled the evening with song, laughter, tears, special events all of which made for pleasant memories. Cameron Newby, home from Belmont University in Nashville, TN was asked to be the first headliner. Other artists performing on the show were Emily Northcutt, Mallory Lawless, Tina Moore, Nicole Usleton, George and Thelma Harrison, Erica Robinson, Tiffany Henry, Nancy Borum, Jimmy Borum and Trasy Barnett. Prior to Cameron performing Cliff Moore thanked everyone for praying for his sister, asked everyone to remember Bobby Pair who lost his sister, Joy and to pray for Cameron’s grandmother, Joy Young, as she starts her battle cancer. Joys grandchildren, Cameron, Colton, and Trasy presented Joy with flowers showing their love, affection and support for “Grandma.” Cameron’s performance was filled with “JOY” in more than one way. Joy of being home with his family, joy of honoring his grandmother Joy Young, ;and joy of being with his extended CMSA family. The familiar echo of “Who’s Your Daddy” was acknowledged by Cameron saying “you don’t know how much I miss hearing that.” What Cliff did not say “You don’t know how much I miss yelling it.” Cameron had a very emotional appearance referencing the wrist band he has been wearing since the benefit he held for high school friend Jessica who passed away, remembering his first grade music teachers son SGT Edy who passed away , dealing with his grandmas battle with stage three lung cancer, explaining his feelings about his CMSA friends and his buddy and duet partner Cutter. He ended the show opening his heart to his family and friends singing “Carrying Your Love With Me. ” An audience that has opened their hearts to Cameron also was emotional. Applause, laughter, sadness, pictures, all filled the evening with a great show filled with “Joy!” Angie Guice from Joyful Noise Productions and Helen Moore, Chairman of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraiser had Anita Walker post the first balloon representing the Riverlife Church in Moore donation from attendees at her Gospel Praise Night event. Everyone wanted to sing with Cameron but this show unlike the Cameron Tribute which was sponsored by “Cutter” time was limited.

Laura grew up with music in her family. Her dad, Ralph McCoy, was a professional musician for many years, until he felt it wasn’t healthy for his family, so he gave it up. He still played in churches, and sang, but he used it to praise the Lord. She tells of when she was little, how they would sit on the front porch of their house in the summer and her Dad would get out his guitar and her mom, Dad, Mom, brother and her, would Laura and sing for hours, until it was really late and they would Richard worry the neighbors might get mad . Those were sweet wonderful times, cheri s h e d me mo r i e s . Richard, Laura’s b r ot h er passed away in 2003, shared the Christmas Laura & same love of music. It Laura 6 Richard was just in their blood. This talent has passed down, from her grandpa Joe, to Ralph, to Laura and to her own children. Paul, who has his own band, called, One way Revolution and to her daughter Alisha who sings at her church on the praise team. Hopefully grandbabies are in her future and they will be singers too! So, years later, when Laura, was ready to move back home, Ralph, her dad told her, if you move here, I will find a way to get you involved with music. So he began his search as promised. Ralph knew Lottie Northcutt, from years ago, and he knew her dad was into music. So he began making phone calls. Merle Reader was thrilled to have them. He invited them first to the gospel show, and they loved it. So then, they went to a business meeting the following Monday. At that point they knew, this is where they belonged. So at the next open mic at Furrs, Laura and Ralph both audition and were accepted with open arms. The rest is history. Ralph kept his promise to Laura. Since then on Dec 28th 2011,, Ralph has passed away, but he lives on, you can hear it in Laura’s music each and every time you hear her sing. Laura’s Mom, Mildred McCoy has become very active and is now our CMSA/Heartland Opry Treasurer, and Laura’s Husband, Kevin Tatum is our Vice President. Also, Kevin is very busy with running the sound for the Gospel and Country shows. Laura is going to start working with the Bob Wood Memorial, something her dad believed in and in getting this project finished. In a way, pick up where he left off. Kevin and Laura have now started to get involved with our NACAMI organization and are now on the advisory board. They hope they make some positive changes and hope to be a great asset to them.

Nacmai Advisory Board Since, moving back to Oklahoma, after being gone for over 30 years, many, many things wonderful thing have happened, and many dreams have come true. First of all, she met Kevin Tatum and they were married Aug 23rd, 2008, just celebrating their 3 yrs. anniversary. Congrats!! Also, she has had the opportunity to sing at so many great places, such as the , Heartland Opry, Oklahoma Opry, Rodeo Opry, Cowboy Opry, Clinton Jamboree, Oklahoma State Fairs, Guthrie, Nashville, Pigeon Forge, TN, Benefit concerts, and one special one where we opened for Susie Lunch singer, Branson, and most recently McSwain Theater, Ada, OK. Really pretty much everywhere and all over!! She loves gospel and says that it is her first Laura & Donna love. Another awesome thing is that, she is the 2nd part to a duet called “Heartland Sweethearts” along with Donna Marie Urbassik. They have been singing for about a couple of years now and already have won awards, locally, statewide and nationally. The sing country and gospel and if you ever hear them sing, you can tell they are having a blast. Laura herself has won many awards as well, and this year has been nominated as New Horizon with CMSA and nominated as Female Vocalist of the year- New Horizon with Branson’s “Best is yet to Come” group. Boy is she excited!!! CMSA’s Heartland opry is a big part of Laura’s life. She loves what it’s about, and she loves to see the young people take their talent and use it . Being a big advocate for the kids, she feels the kids are our future and without them, we Laura & Dad won’t have a CMSA. We have to promote these kids, or we will lose them. Laura has four grown children, two of her own and two step children, Paul, 24, Drew 24, Alisha, 23, who is getting married on March 24th and Melanie who is 21. Laura also works full time job for a company that manufactures and rents tools to oil wells. She has been there for almost 4 years and has done very well with this company. So you can see, her life is full and very busy, but will always take time to say hi, or give you a hug, or just be an encouragement to you. CMSA is proud to have Laura as an active member of the CMSA Heartland Opry. She is indeed an asset to our organization and a great singer.

The show was sponsored by Connie and Clint McCoy. Kennedy Horton opened the show singing the national anthem and then sh e e mce ed it. It was Kennedy’s birthday show and what a great show. Kennedy did a fine job emceeing. Kennedy kicked off the show with “Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love”. Great job! Charles Jones followed with “Singing The Blues” and “I’ll Go It Alone” in Charles’ smooth style. Kailyn Jolliff came on singing “A Little Bit of Love” and followed that with “Why Haven’t I Heard From You”. She is such a little dynamite. Our member’s only drawing was held and Pattie Miller’s name was drawn. Pattie missed out on $87.50. Sorry Pattie you have to be present to win! Maybe next time! Larry Whittle was next and sang is first song to Kennedy “16 Candles” in honor of her 16th birthday. Bill Kratzer sang “Honey Bee” and “Who Are You When I’m not Looking”. Two very good songs done well by Bill. Donna McLaughlin followed with “Begging To You” in her wonderful alto voice. Wes Fowler, a new comer to our stage, came out and sang “Red Dirt Road” and “Her Man”. What a wonderful addition to our shows! I hope to see and hear more of this fine young man. Kennedy thought so too!!!!\ John Monroe had to follow and follow he did as only John can with “Don’t Close Your Eyes”. Second half kicked off with Kennedy singing “Mama’s Song” and “Stronger”. Very well done and loved both songs. Charles Jones did “I Walk Alone” and as usual did a great job. Kailyn Jolliff followed with “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” doing a fine job on an old Rock “N Roll song. Larry Whittle sang “Daddy’s Home” and a gospel song “Light House”. Very nice job! Bill Kratzer followed that with his rendition of an Alan Jackson song “ I Don’t Even Know Your Name”. Donna McLaughlin came back to do “Apartment #9”. Then John Monroe did “Farewell Party” and “I Did It My Way”. Both gentlemen did a great job. Our Entertainer’s Only drawing was held and Clancy Tressemer missed out on $37.50. Sorry Clancy, you shoulda’ been there. Wes Fowler ended the show with “This Ain’t Nothing”. It was a great night and you shoulda’ been there!! Our next CMSA/ HEARTLAND OPRY show will be September 17 headlining our own Miss Emily Northcutt. Let’s pack the house. Thank you Connie and Clint for sponsoring the Show.
