Chairman’s introduction

Tim Wray Chairman Our formal CSR efforts started in 2005 and since then we have worked to grow our programme across the global business. We recognise the positive impact the business has on society, through the projects we are a part of, the way we work with local communities and the support we offer our employees. Over the past year our CSR efforts have gone from strength to strength, increasing engagement and understanding with employees and allowing for a dramatic increase in activities across all of our regions, a great success in such unstable economic times. We continue to attract senior executives and managers to the business, while working to help those who are part of the business to develop and progress. This year we are planning for 325 current and future leaders to undertake leadership and management training. As the business continues to grow, we understand the need for our leaders to be equipped to manage others and be exceptional role models for the rest of the business. I am happy to report an increase in female employees moving into more senior positions across the business.

With continued global growth we have seen greater involvement, across all of our seven regions, in community initiatives such as volunteering and fundraising. Our volunteer hours have doubled in the last year and I hope to see this figure continue to rise in the future. We have also seen seven pro bono activities take place around the world this year, using our skills and expertise to help worthy causes. Awareness of our environmental impact is growing as we continue to implement our environmental database across our offices. Our UK region has also extended its service offering to provide low carbon foresight to our clients, helping them to implement solutions that minimise environmental impacts while providing savings year on year. Ensuring that our internal activities mirror the services we are providing is essential, as it is important for future generations that we safeguard our resources now. This year’s CSR report will again showcase regional highlights, our achievements from around the world over the past year and outline how we plan to continue to progress in the future. CSR policy

CSR is an integral part of our organisation and a way in which we demonstrate our continued commitment to all of the regions where we operate. There is a direct link between the sustainable economic growth of our business and our ability to better fulfil our responsibilities to the communities where we live and work, to our employees, our suppliers and the environment. We are an international company operating in many different business and social environments. Wherever we work, we seek to implement this policy. Our CSR commitments are based around four key areas of responsibility: • community: supporting the people and communities in the regions where we operate • workplace: recognising that the success of our business is a direct result of the quality and commitment of the people we employ • marketplace: conducting business honestly and fairly while encouraging awareness of social and environmental issues • environment: conducting business in a sustainable manner while managing and reducing our environmental impact

4

Turner & Townsend

The Executive Board sets our CSR policy, and the Chairman is responsible for managing this policy through a committee and regional representatives across the business. We have adopted performance monitoring measures to demonstrate the progress of continuous improvement in our CSR initiatives. Turner & Townsend has a number of policies to complement our CSR policy. These include our Health and Safety Policy, Risk Management Policy, Environmental Policy, Client Care, Ethics Policy, Code of Conduct, Anti-Bribery & Corruption Policy, Equal Opportunity Policy, Data Protection and our General Business Principles. We communicate this policy internally through new employee inductions, through published information on our intranet and through our business management systems. Externally we communicate this policy, and our progress, through this annual CSR report, our website and when liaising with clients and building new relationships.

Chief Executive’s commitment

Vincent Clancy Chief Executive Officer We recognise the positive impact our business can have on society and our CSR policy remains a testament to our commitment to be a good corporate citizen. The CSR Committee continue to work to embed CSR as a core value within our brand and this report showcases some of the individual success stories from across the global business. I am pleased to see many of our people continue to get out and volunteer in growing numbers, though we can still do more in this area. Going forward I hope that we can once again double our volunteer hours in the coming year. Fundraising and donations have also risen on previous years, and regional ownership of CSR activities is growing, allowing us to more adequately address local needs. Our people are key to the success of our business. This year we had our largest ever graduate intake and we continue to increase our spending on learning and development. Retention is as important as recruitment, and therefore our focus remains on providing an environment where we nurture our talent, ensuring we can continually deliver for our clients.

Many employees have had the opportunity to relocate within the business, providing us with people who understand our values in new locations. We recognise the importance of building local businesses and using local talent, and look to do this whenever possible while ensuring we have long-term staff who understand our way of doing business. Diversity remains a challenge, and we are exploring ways in which we can support the change that the industry needs. We continue to gain external recognition for our achievements. We were named Global Consultant of the Year by New Civil Engineer, won the Outstanding International Business Award from British Expertise, and the Construction Consultant/Surveyor of the Year Award at the Building Awards. Greater understanding of the impact we have on the environment is still needed, and we are working towards being able to reduce this while continuing to grow our business. Our commitment to CSR has grown over the years and will continue to do so with support from the management boards across the regions. Vincent Clancy Chief Executive Officer

Our

community We recognise that by the nature of our business, we impact the communities where we live and work. We are committed to being a responsible corporate citizen, taking seriously the impact we make on these communities and the world around us, ensuring we are making positive, lasting legacies.

Every employee at Turner & Townsend is given one paid day per year to participate in a volunteer activity. Over the past year we have doubled the number of hours taken by employees for various causes and gave a total of 2,880 hours this year. Activities have ranged from gardening and redecorating for local community projects or charities, to speaking to young adults about career opportunities in the construction industry. Throughout the year we have also undertaken pro bono services on seven different projects.

Pro bono services, projects given at a reduced or no fee, have been donated to third sector organisations or other local organisations where there is a demonstrated social value to the community. These projects are delivered with the same professional rigour and to the same high standards and time schedules that our fee-paying clients would expect.

Australia’s fundraising commitments

South Africa toy libraries

Botswana Baylor Children’s Clinic

Australia’s fundraising commitments Over the past year our Australian offices have contributed a significant amount through donations and fundraising. In 2012, we committed to a threeyear partnership with the Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Service (ADAWS), delivered by Mater Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) in Brisbane. The programme, for young people aged between 13 and 18, provides a structured and safe environment promoting alternative choices to drug use. Turner & Townsend first became involved with the ADAWS project through providing pro bono construction services and has been working with the Mater Hospital for over 20 years. South Africa toy libraries In 2005 our South African offices established the Alex Toy Library, an initiative that has grown over time with three additional facilities. These libraries allow children from low income families to play with toys on their premises, socialise, and borrow toys to take home for a short period of time. Our support for this initiative continues today and includes financial contributions to the operating organisation Friends for Life, funds for special events, cleaning, replacing and maintaining toys, as well as using volunteer days to ensure that premises are well maintained.

Supporting The Dutch Cancer Society This year our offices in the Netherlands have partnered with The Dutch Cancer Society, The Queen Wilhelmina Foundation, KWF Kankerbestrijding, as a ‘business friend’.

Pro bono services

The foundation operates across the Netherlands, supporting cancer-related research, public awareness campaigns and patient support programmes. As part of our commitment, we are providing financial support and aim to raise awareness amongst our employees while engaging them in fundraising and volunteering projects.

“We are delighted to be offering our support for KWF. Our partnership will contribute to making a real difference to cancer-related research and awareness in the Netherlands, and I look forward to a year full of activities to further this goal.” Marvin Vos, Director, The Netherlands

St Joseph’s Care Group Hospital Following a community fundraising campaign, St. Joseph’s Care Group Hospital in Thunder Bay, Northern Canada, garnered funding for the redevelopment of their Hospice Palliative Care Wing. Along with other project partners, we donated cost estimation and project management services, providing construction cost estimation guidance through the tendering phase, and project management services through the construction and close out phases. Botswana Baylor Children’s Clinic Throughout the past year, we have provided cost management and negotiation services – at a substantially reduced fee – for a new centre for the Botswana Baylor Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence, established by the Baylor International Paediatric AIDS Initiative. The centre in Gaborone will be used by HIV positive adolescents to receive ARV medical treatment, for recreation facilities and social support services.

Our

workplace Our workplace vision is to ensure the continuous development of our people, to attract and retain the best talent in the industry and ensure we have a sustainable business model. We work to maintain a committed and productive workforce, delivering positive results for both our employees and our customers.

Over the past year our business has grown from 2,781 people to 3,239. We are registered with Investors in People, and use this framework to ensure we are continuously improving. Each year we ask employees to complete our engagement survey. This allows Turner & Townsend to understand where we need to improve engagement with our employees to help them succeed within the organisation, and where we are doing well.

Results of the survey are analysed and reported through the organisation to create action plans for each area of the business. This year we are pleased to report that there were some very positive outcomes, with 82 percent of employees surveyed agreeing that they are “happy to go the extra mile for Turner & Townsend” and 84 percent saying “I know what is expected of me in my role.”

Learning and development We recognise the importance of investing in the development of our people to ensure the continued success of our business and to help employees progress. This financial year, 114 UK employees have started studying professional qualifications supported by the company. These qualifications include the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’ (RICS) Assessment of Professional Competence, the Association of Project Management’s (APM) qualifications and Management Development Programmes. We encourage employees to undertake learning and development opportunities through formal means, such as those mentioned above, or through less formal routes, including mentoring, coaching opportunities and using their CSR volunteer day. We also have an eLearning portal through which employees can access courses including computer skills, commercial focus skills, project delivery and leadership. Equality and diversity At Turner & Townsend we recognise the importance of having a diverse workforce. We are committed to promoting gender equality and the progression of women in our organisation, in an industry with a clear tendency to attract more male employees. Over the past year we are pleased to see that the split between male and female associate directors has

remained consistent, while more females have reached director level. Although there is still work to be done across our wider industry, we are proud to see an improvement across our business.

Health and wellbeing Manhattan Light the Night Walk At the beginning of October 2012 a group of ten employees from our New York City office took part in the Manhattan Light the Night walk and raised over £1,060 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Over 200 walks take place each year across North America and the money raised funds lifesaving research and support for people battling the disease. We are proud to be able to support this cause through fundraising efforts and by raising awareness. Supporting Mind Employees from our London office took part in two events in 2012, raising a total of £8,240 in support of the mental health charity, Mind. The charity raises public awareness of this issue and provides support through information services, helplines and a network of local services across England and Wales.

The second event took place over a weekend in early September when four employees participated in the Three Peaks Challenge. This endurance challenge involves climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pyke and Snowdon across the UK over two days. Again, funds were raised through an office auction, personal sponsorship and support from the company.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Turner & Townsend for supporting Mind and really going the extra mile to raise money to support our services. Without generous donations like these, we could not continue to reach out to the one in four people affected by mental health problems each year.” Paul Farmer, Chief Executive, Mind

In July 2012, 29 employees participated in the British 10k, raising funds through office events, personal sponsorship and a direct donation from Turner & Townsend.

Environmental impact Over the past year we have seen improvements made across many of our offices, allowing us to reduce our environmental impact. Our Australian region has again excelled in environmental initiatives. The Melbourne office had motion sensor lights installed while the Cairns office has changed their lighting system altogether, allowing the maximisation of natural light, and reducing electricity consumption by over 40 percent. Our facilities team in Australia have more recently been working with our stationery supplier to widen their offering of green products; in return they have been helping to improve our purchasing practices. In Africa, our Johannesburg office has installed automatic lighting and air conditioning and we have already seen a significant reduction in our energy consumption. We are now looking at using this system in other offices across the region. In our Leeds office, we have implemented a full recycling system, ensuring we are sending zero waste to landfill. Around the office there are now numerous sets of recycling bins and all bins at desks have been removed to ensure waste is being placed into the correct waste stream.

the Strand. This move saw the floor space decrease by two percent, though with better use of the space we have been able to increase desk space, allowing growth in employee numbers by 23 percent. Energy consumption per full time employee in the London office has reduced from 832kWh to 753kWh. Helping clients achieve LEED This year we worked with Marks & Spencer in India, resulting in the first retail store in the country to receive LEED platinum status. The Marks & Spencer store at South Extension, New Delhi is also the first Marks & Spencer store overseas to receive the highest internationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. Carrying out project and cost management services for the company’s retail roll-out in India, Turner & Townsend advised on lifecycle costing, enabling Marks & Spencer to take informed steps towards reducing its operational costs while simultaneously targeting LEED certification.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Marks & Spencer as it expands in India. To see these projects, completed both within budget and on time, culminate in this national first, is hugely rewarding. “Our work has set a platinum-standard for Indian retail construction and illustrates our commitment to achieving excellence when it comes to improving our clients’ efficiency and sustainability.” Mark Richards, Managing Director, India, Turner & Townsend

Turner & Townsend’s New Delhi team exceeded Marks & Spencer’s expectations when the 1,400m2 store achieved the highest rating awarded by the US Green Building Council (USGBC).
