Partnerships – the key to making the world a better place Dear Reader! This is the second time for us to put together a summary of the Corporate Social Responsibility activities in our region. In this brochure we have described a sample of the projects accomplished via dedication and passion of our people in support of our societies. Balanced approach towards the needs of our society, environment, customers, employees and other stakeholders is one of the five key drivers behind Oracle’s vision for 2010 in EMEA and our challenge is to make it more and more an integral part of the daily life. As you know I am the EMEA sponsor for the Partnering Excellence for Vision 2010 and I, of course, appreciate very much that we are using this drive across the activities here too. Partnering is one dominant themes in the stories. We partner with NGOs so that we can both, them and Oracle, can combine our strengths for better results. We partner with the various Ministry of Education to create frameworks for improving IT use and business education. We also have partnered with a children’s home to make good things together with them – planting forest, finding homes to abandoned animals – both our employees and children being active members of the society bringing positive changes to our environment.

In the EE & CIS Region, our philosophy is to focus on avoiding problems for the longer term, not only to deal with their negative results of today, therefore most of the activities are with children and education. As for entire EMEA, environmental questions will be more on the agenda. Focusing on saving lives via blood donation is a regular practice in many of our countries; in this summary you will also find a sample of this activity. Hopefully the stories here will give you some stimulating thoughts on how to get involved and help your society or environment. But the thinking is not enough. Our thoughts may change the way we see the world but only our actions have a chance to make the world a better place. Looking forward to partnering with you in this pursuit.

Oracle Austria teaches Internet & Multimedia to teenage refugees Oracle Austria engaged with the Vienna-based Integrationshaus to conduct a series of Internet & Multimedia workshops during the second half of 2006. We invited teenage refugees from Afghanistan, Kosovo, Ethiopia and other regions living in the Integrationhaus facility to our office-tower to discover the fascinating world of IT. During all four workshops, attended by an average of eight teenagers in sessions lasting up to three hours each, we made one Oracle coach available for every two participants - to be responsive to varying skill levels, languages and individual questions. After an initial lesson on the basics of a computer, we demonstrated how to create, design and publish a funny homepage on the Internet. The teenagers quickly took up the intuitive (hosted) webpage-tool and started uploading their personal photos and putting together content about their home countries. We then moved on to creating business cards with a simple tool downloaded from the Internet. What the youths loved most was to design coloured personal cards and to print and cut them themselves! After a short test we handed out “official” certificates for having participated in an Oracle basic computer course. For the teenagers it was a welcome change in their difficult life, giving them insight into a world not known to them. More then 15 Oracle volunteers shared their rich IT knowledge and skills with refugee teenagers during the programme.

Oracle Bulgaria team supports children’s hospital in Sofia In September last year the Oracle Bulgaria team chose a children’s hospital in Sofia as the project for their efforts during Oracle's Global Volunteer Days. The hospital, the only one of its kind in the country, specialises in remedial programmes for children suffering from Cerebral Palsy. The Oracle team descended on the hospital to help redecorate a playroom where the children gather everyday either before or after receiving treatment. The playroom serves as part of a centre that teaches the children how to take an active part in everyday life through development of their motor, perceptual, speech, mental and learning skills. The playroom walls were completely redecorated and the furniture was renovated and rearranged to create a more pleasant and fun environment for the children to play in and study.

Oracle Croatia visits Caritas' Home for Children On 14 October 2006 Oracle volunteers visited Caritas' Home for Children a facility that cares for about 30 children aged from two to 18 years. The Oracle team helped paint out two rooms, decorated three others and also cleaned up the playground. More importantly, they spent time with the children who showed how much they miss parental care and the company of adults by demonstrating enormous willingness and enthusiasm to help and participate in all activities. The Oracle volunteers were entertained by one of the children who played a Croatian national musical instrument, the tamburica. Oracle also arranged the donation of five bicycles and volunteers prepared the children to enjoy their new vehicles by teaching them how to ride. This event filled us with enormous satisfaction as we know we were able to make a difference on the day and contribute in some way to making the lives of the children just a little more fulfilling.

Oracle Czech teams up with a children’s home to help the Prague ZOO Almost 100 people from Oracle Czech and children from a children’s home in Cerna Voda helped the Prague ZOO to recover from extensive damage that still remains to this day after disastrous floods in 2002. During “Volunteers Day 2007”, children spent an unforgettable day playing, working and relaxing in the ZOO. Together with the children, the Oracle Czech volunteers cleaned up along a 500m long river line belonging to the ZOO. We filled 112 trash bags and piled up 5 huge heaps of driftwood. During the day money was collected to sponsor two animals that were to be chosen by the children. The children were also treated to a fantastic weekend in Prague. Besides helping the Oracle team to clean the river line, they took part in competitions in the ZOO area and were rewarded with medals and candy. Twelve of the older boys also enjoyed rafting on the river. On the second day of the weekend the children went to a 3D cinema and had some free time to explore Prague and spend their pocket money. Oracle Czech is no stranger to partnering with children’s homes Oracle Czech employees are enthusiastic supporters of the non-profit Heart in Hand project that was jointly founded by Oracle Czech and Dell in 2003. The goal of the project is to create a motivational environment within children’s homes to better prepare them for the challenges they will face after they leave the home. In providing support we take into account both the social situation and capabilities of individual children. We currently support two children’s homes. To help the Heart in Hand project, Oracle Czech organised the second annual charity golf tournament and also the second annual charity Christmas concert. The children on the motivational program also attend Oracle Czech Volunteer Days, such as the project to help clean with the river line at the Prague Zoo, and participate in other activities by creating artwork for charity events and by acting/singing at the annual Christmas concert. Oracle employees helped to create the magic of Christmas for the children by donating money that was used to buy Christmas presents for the children.

Oracle Cyprus - Painting Christmas Day The true meaning and spirit of Christmas came early to the island of Cyprus. On the afternoon of December 20, 2006 Oracle staff, some accompanied by their spouse and children, took part in an inspiring and fulfilling event in association with children from the Nicosia Children’s Shelter based in Acropolis. It was an afternoon not to be forgotten – an afternoon packed with inspiring creativity based on the creation of two beautiful paintings by children from the shelter under the guidance of the Oracle team and Ms Marianna Charalambous, a volunteer from the Cyprus Organization for Standardization. The day was designed to nurture feelings and emotions; a day in which both adults and children were able to interact freely and dedicate themselves to painting and playing games; an afternoon to inspire the youngest members of our society and to set the tone for a truly memorable Christmas vacation. The Nicosia Children’s Shelter is an association hosted by the Cyprus Government under the supervision of the Ministry of Labour. The association is served by a regular workforce and active volunteers who embrace 18 children, including orphans, children abandoned by their parents, and children whose parents have severe health-related problems and are unable to nurture and care for their children. The Nicosia Children’s Shelter at Acropolis is one of many such associations spread throughout the island and that have undertaken the task of providing a home to all children who come from families with difficulties. These homes provide every child with love, activities, support, education and mentoring in a caring environment. The Oracle team’s participation in the Painting Christmas Day event was focused on the creation of two paintings – one featuring a Christmas tree and the second a rainbow and flowers portraying the beauty of Christmas Day. Other activities included games of basketball and a series of chess games in which children were mentored and challenged by Oracle staff. Painting Christmas Day also featured a small party at which Santa Claus made his appearance, complete with a bag full of gifts for the children. The day will be long cherished by all who took part – all who experienced moments of sheer magic captured in the faces, excitement and joy of the children. The Rainbow painting was handed over to Oracle as a gift by the children - a gift that will forever remind us of the simple, everyday needs among people within our society – basic needs that we often tend to take for granted.

Oracle Estonia celebrates a rewarding year of partnership with the Viiratsi Children’s Home A decision not to discard old and unwanted office furniture on the nearest rubbish dump and instead find a worthy home for it has resulted in the establishment of a highly successful and rewarding relationship between Oracle Estonia and the Children’s Home of Viiratsi. The partnership, which is about to celebrate its first year of friendship and cooperation, was set up when Oracle moved its operations to new premises in Tallinn and the question of what to do with the old office furniture came up. Oracle employees were challenged to find a solution of what to do with the office furniture and also what CSR project they should get involved in. It was unanimously agreed by staff that they would like to work with children and that they should do so through a long-term commitment rather than by making a one-time donation of the furniture or money. So, during the spring of 2006, a meeting was set up with the Children’s Home of Viiratsi, a facility located in the southern part of Estonia in the suburb of Viljandi. The purpose of the meeting was to understand and clarify the children’s needs and to gather ideas of how to play a meaningful role in their lives. Our objective was to work with the 32 children aged between 7 and 22 years and with the staff of 23 at the home to identify projects we could undertake together. The Oracle team was determined to find projects that would involve the children as active participants in everyday life related to both pleasure and business rather than setting them up as passive recipients of charity. Since that first meeting, the partnership has flourished beyond our wildest dreams. The first project was “Forest Day” – an event that so inspired the children that they wrote a whole book for us in which they expressed the feelings they experienced on the day. In June 2006 we teamed up with the children to help pick up litter and cleanup the Tallinn Zoo. Together with the children, we had the opportunity to experience the excitement of a night-time visit to the zoo.

These two days together, outside of our everyday problems and elements, provided us all with far more than we had hoped for. We experienced real synergy and discovered that “one plus one” does not make “two”, but adds up to “five”. The programme also brought home to us a very simple yet profound message – the only way to make a difference is to do the right things together with the right people.

During the summer Oracle employees were invited to participate as referees and officials in the annual Sports Games for children from homes all over Estonia. In the autumn, in the spirit of true partnership that has developed between Oracle and the children from the Viiratsi home, we were asked by the children to dedicate an Oracle Volunteers Day to introducing the local community to the sadness of the situation in the Viljandi dog pound. As a team we tried to find new families for homeless dogs. In February this year we organised a two-day common training programme for tutors working in children’s homes and Oracle employees. The motivation for this training was based on an understanding that while our subject fields may be totally different, we do share common goals and interests.

Oracle Greece takes the ‘high road’ for children For the second year in a row, Oracle Greece employees pursued their passion for giving initiatives focused on children education when they embarked on a drive to collect toys, books and money during the Christmas season. The drive was designed to support operations undertaken by Dromi Zois (Roads of Life), a non-governmental, non-profit, volunteer organisation located in the centre of Athens. Dromi Zois helps 50 to 55 immigrant children (5 -18 years old) to stay in school despite financial and other difficulties. Besides helping the children with their studies and homework, the organisation encourages them to get involved in activities such as theatre, painting, pottery, chess etc in an effort to help overcome language problems and enable them to better adapt to their social environment. The organisation also supports about 15 immigrant families by collecting and donating food and clothes even finding jobs for them. The fundraising efforts of Oracle employees were generously supported by Oracle Greece that matched and quadrupled the funds raised by employees. The delivery of all donations to Dromi Zois was received with great appreciation by the children and the organisation’s personnel. In order to build a long-term relationship with the organisation, Oracle Greece is working with publishers of encyclopaedias, schoolbooks and other educational necessities for further donations of the educational tools needed to better help children with their studies. Oracle Greece all “charged up” on the environment A major recycling programme for used batteries from electrical appliances such as laptops, mobile phones, UPS and so on (up to 5kg) as well as for toner and ink cartridges used in laser printers, photocopiers and fax machines, was launched in Oracle Greece's premises on 1 June 2006. Oracle Greece joined the battery recycling initiative that is run by AFIS, a privately owned non-profit organization. Participants in this initiative also include private companies, public sector organisations, schools, shops, super markets, municipalities and many more organisations. In 2006, 291 tons of batteries were collected by AFIS – a total of no less than a staggering 7.8-million units. AFIS has provided Oracle Greece with three recycling bins. An overwhelming response from staff led to Oracle Greece’s first delivery to AFIS on 8 February when over 530 batteries weighing in at 76 Kgs were handed over. The batteries are sent for recycling to other European countries, such as Germany, since there is no recycling unit in Greece. Cartridges are collected from the Oracle offices by another private, non-profit company that sends them to Germany for recycling. More than 20 toners and cartridges were delivery in the first seven months. Based on the success of these initiatives, Oracle Greece is in the process of setting up a paper-recycling programme. MORE

Oracle Greece Athletes Participate in the Europe Corporate Games The Corporate Games are an annual international multi-sporting event designed as a team-building activity. Greece is hosting the Europe Corporate Games each year from 2005-2009. Oracle Greece, along with more than 80 companies from Greece and other European countries, participated in the games both in 2005 and 2006. Oracle Greece, motivated by a goal to promote team and athletic spirit within the organisation, was represented by six athletes at the inaugural event in 2005. Last year we proved that we are well on the way to achieving our goal when the Oracle team more than doubled to 13. Oracle team members took part in tennis, table tennis, tenpin bowling and karting. Oracle employees brought home a silver medal in tenpin bowling mixed doubles and a very credible sixth place in the team karting final. Antonis, a member of the Oracle Karting team commented: “I participated in karting as I wanted something similar to our day-to-day pace in the office: think ahead, act fast, brake hard, and overtake the competition at the critical corner!" The team spirit was high and everyone is looking forward to Europe Corporate Games 2007 when event will be staged in Athens from 19 to 21 October.

Oracle Hungary’s blood donation, a half-yearly practice The Hungarian Red Cross pursues a policy to develop and nurture strong links with the corporate and philanthropic sectors of Hungarian society in an effort to effect positive change on the lives of vulnerable people. Oracle Hungary has joined forces with the Hungarian Red Cross to give effect to this policy through work carried out by Oracle volunteers who help to support activities such as the dissemination of information and fundraising activities. Twice a year, in spring and in autumn, Oracle Hungary opens its office doors to enable people to donate blood at a blood donor facility that is set up in the offices. The facility plays host not only to Oracle staff who so willingly support the initiative, but also to an increasing number of people who come from nearby office blocks. On every occasion the blood donor day is hosted at our office, more and more people demonstrate their generosity and their sense of volunteerism. MORE

Oracle Hungary provides schools with access to the latest information technology The Think.com initiative was launched in Budapest in November 2004 and is steadily gaining momentum with more than 50 schools, including several dual-language schools, having joined the community. Almost 1200 students are currently active on the Think.com portal and it is planned to expand this number to 3000. A special benefit of the Think.com community is that it enables Hungarian children to communicate with peers from other countries, use foreign languages and improve their language skills, which is a high priority in the current educational system. Oracle Hungary plays an active role in supporting the roll-out of the latest information technology to schools in the Think.com community as well as providing training and other developmental support programmes.

Another Oracle Hungary educational initiative, ThinkQuest, which encompasses all the skills and knowledge need derived from projects such as Think.com and Oracle Academy, is proving to be one of the most successful programmes of its type in Hungary. For a number of years Hungary has provided the second highest number of teams that participate in the annual ThinkQuest international programme – second only to the United States. In recognition of the outstanding commitment and work done by Hungarian students in the ThinkQuest programme, Oracle Hungary initiated an awards programme for teams in 2005. Last year (2006) the awards ceremony took place at EDUCATIO, the largest Hungarian educational conference and exhibition. MORE

The Oracle Academy, a partnership with secondary schools, educates students on the fundamentals of database design and equips them with interviewing, presentation, project management, and collaboration skills. The academy was launched two years ago and since then 11 schools have joined the program with 13 teachers participating in online teaching methods. The first graduates of the Oracle Academy will receive their certificates this year and be strongly positioned to find their way in the outside world.

Oracle Hungary moves into The House of Future The House of Future, a world-class educational, scientific, recreational and cultural centre focused on the conglomeration of info-communication, cuttingedge technology, the latest advances in science, and alternative education, as well as the arts, culture and recreation will this year benefit from participation by Oracle Hungary. Children will live in a part of the House of Future – a section from which all adults are banned! Our assignment in this School of the Future in the House of Future is to provide the children with the “provisions” needed to live and behave in a thoughtful, creative manner. The “provisions” are nothing more than useful knowledge. Not set facts and answers, but rather alternatives that spawn further contemplation. Drama pedagogy, debate and project methodology – coupled with cooperative organisation of study – are methods that provide students with the opportunity to independently search for and find authentic answers to their own questions with the support of their teacher. Oracle Hungary, through Think.com, will provide access for visitors to share their adventures with their peers and to work collaboratively on different scientific projects.

Oracle Malta partners with the Government of Malta to bridge the Digital Divide “Malta is gaining an important partner in its efforts to transform Malta into an ICT centre of excellence.” This is how the Government of Malta’s Minister for Investment, Industry and IT, the Hon Austin Gatt, described the recently formed Vertical Strategic Alliance with Oracle. Details of the new Vertical Strategic Alliance between the Government of Malta and Oracle Corporation were given in a Press Conference addressed by Minister Gatt and Mr Alfonso Di Ianni, Oracle’s Senior Vice President for European Enlargement and CIS region. The event was also attended by Mr. Kevin Attard, Oracle Malta Country Leader. Mr Di Ianni expressed his satisfaction of being able to team up with the Maltese Government in its journey to be the ‘lighthouse of the Mediterranean’ as far as ICT is concerned. He described Malta’s strategy and vision as a sound foundation for Malta to become the ICT regional centre of excellence. Minister Gatt said the alliance sets the framework for the launch of a number of projects which seek to increase the level and employability of ICT graduates coming out of the University and Malta College of Arts Science and Technology (MCAST). The Minister said the alliance is in line with the declared objectives of his ministry.

The Government of Malta has already declared its support for the development of an ICT incubation and proof of concept centre by forging alliances with major multinationals to provide their technologies in a lab environment. The government also wants to identify companies which can be encouraged and supported to set up ICT operations in Malta. “The Government wants to encourage and support the local ICT industry in organising itself into specialised niche areas aimed at providing a comprehensive suite of services. It also wants to set up industry–leading ICT academies to engender the broadest suite of specialised skills in the local labour market,” the minister said. Through the alliance, Oracle will sponsor the training of trainers and provide software for the institutions to enable them to offer the certifications to their students. Oracle will also offer academic pricing (with discounts of up to 90%) on a range of Oracle software to be used by educational institutions for their internal administrative requirements. An important element within the alliance is an initiative whereby a number of students will be provided with work experience among Oracle’s Maltese Partners during the summer. These student engagements within the local ICT industry will be sponsored by Oracle. Students will also qualify to receive free Oracle software (the latest versions) after graduating from ICT degree courses and certifications at the University and MCAST. MORE

Oracle Poland supports XV Final national charity event The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity is the largest and most successful charity organisation of its kind in Poland. The organisation’s objectives include saving children's lives, health promotion and education in the field of preventive treatment. Between 1993 and 2006 The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity has collected and spent over $65-million on meeting its objectives. Besides its humanitarian work, the foundation is also a powerful medium for spreading the ideology of kindness, friendship, tolerance, and openness. Over the past 10 years the foundation has successfully completed eight major projects, including the purchase of an extensive range of specialised medical equipment needed by the numerous paediatric divisions specialising in cardiosurgery, neonatal medicine, oncology, post-traumatic surgery, paediatric nephrology, diagnostics, newborns' surgery, and newborns and children under 5-years-old facilities.

On January 14 this year the foundation staged the XV Final – a fund-raising drive to collect money for saving the lives of children injured in accidents and for and first aid. The XV Final is day-long, nation-wide event staged on the first Sunday of the year that also features a day-long “telethon” – live television broadcast that takes in pledges from donors. Oracle Poland has been partnering with The Orchestra for over seven years, providing database solutions to enable the effective organisation and management of data related the organisation’s operations. On the day of the finale, Oracle volunteers were on hand in the television studio to help manage the flow of pledges.

Altogether, the charity has bought and distributed more than 10, 000 of the most modern and technically advanced pieces of medical equipment to Polish Public Hospitals around the country. The foundation has also supplied ambulances, incubators, physiologic monitors, oxygen blenders, infusion and drainage pumps, pulse oximeters, infant ventilators, new beds, anti-bed-sore mattresses, and many more.

Outstanding Oracle education strategy implemented in Romania During 2006 Oracle Romania increased its commitment and consolidated its role as a major contributor and leading player in the Romanian national educational system. Not only did the company succeed in extending existing educational programmes such as those under the former Oracle Academic Initiative and the Oracle Academy, but it also successfully launched the Think.com program into schools and developed extensive new programmes. Through its commitment to broad and integrated initiatives, Oracle now supports one of the most comprehensive educational programmes on offer in Romania - a programme that covers children, students and other learners from the age of nine to 35 years of age. The momentum for the rapid and successful advances made during 2006 was initiated when Oracle Romania signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research on 16 January 2006. The MoU was the culmination of the success of a programme first launched into two schools in Romania by Oracle in 2002.

trained 120 Romanian teachers as instructors through the Oracle Academy’s “train the trainer” programme. In terms of two addenda to the MoU, signed in May last year and again in January this year, this initiative is to be expanded to training a further 600 Romanian teachers using 42 teachers who have been selected from the pool of trainers who graduated last year. These teachers will deliver the Oracle Academy “train the trainers” programme. At the same time, the Oracle Academy curriculum for “Database design and programming with SQL” will be adopted as part of the national education curriculum for 12th Grade in the 2007-2008 school year. Romanian teachers trained within the Oracle Academy – Romanian Institute will then deliver these curriculum subjects more than 30,000 pupils a year. The breakthrough achieved by the Oracle Academy – Romanian Institute was supported by major successes achieved in other educational initiatives supported by Oracle in the country. MORE

In terms of the MoU, an agreement was put in place to collaborate on a project designed to provide all Romanian students with the opportunity to master the latest technologies and learn key business skills. Christmas with Oracle for orphans and elderly people in Romania Oracle Romania employees embarked on a major giving initiative during December 2006 in an effort to bring joy and excitement to people in need. More than 200 children from five Romanian orphanages in Giurgiu and Arges counties as well as children at the Lapunsnicul Mare Kindergarten received toys collected by the Oracle team. The Oracle team also donated two television sets to the Mironesti Asylum for elderly people in Giurgiu County. The home houses 100 elderly people and was visited again by the Oracle team during March. It is planned to repeat these giving initiatives this year.

Oracle Serbia meets with national president to discuss IT in education The advancement of IT in education and the positive impact Oracle has made in this field were key topics on the agenda during a recent visit by President Boris Tadic to the Oracle Belgrade office.

Mr Kolaro said: “It was a privilege to host the President at our offices. We are committed to helping Serbia develop a strong IT culture, and to preparing young Serbians to enter the workplace with IT skills that are in high demand.” MORE

The president was accompanied by Mr. Nenad Bogdanovic, the Mayor of Belgrade, and was welcomed by Oracle Country Leader, Mr. Klod Kolaro and Ms. Ljiljana Krkic, a representative of Oracle University and Oracle Academy. President Tadic was briefed on the significant investments in education and development that Oracle has put in place to improve IT skills and to retain young educated, specialist workers in Serbia. As an example of our progress in Serbia, last year we piloted Oracle Academy initiatives within two schools in Belgrade. After speaking to a number of Oracle Academy students and teachers, the president presented them with gifts. He also expressed an interest in introducing the Oracle Think.com programme for primary schools, which may be considered once plans to improve ICT infrastructure in primary schools are complete. During their visit, the president and mayor were given a brief history of the corporation along with an update on its goals and plans for the future. As the world's largest enterprise software company, Oracle is the leading supplier of IT to governments and telecommunications companies and has a strong reputation in Serbia, supported by its well-established relationships in the country.

Oracle Serbia rehabilitates children’s centre Vracar, a healthcare institution for children in Belgrade, was the victim of a time warp. Established in 1972, the centre was sadly neglected and had not benefited from any maintenance or further development for more than two decades. The centre’s windows were old and rickety. There was no heating. There were no chairs in the waiting room. Baby cradles and cots were old and falling apart. There were no plants. Paint on the walls was dull and peeling. During December 2006 Oracle Serbia and Montenegro employees decided it was time for drastic action and that Vracar should be brought into the 21st Century. Armed with an enormous amount of enthusiasm, tools, paint and everything else that was needed, the Oracle volunteers got stuck in to transform the centre. The waiting room in the paediatric section was given a new coat of paint and furnished with new chairs. Windows were repaired to keep out the cold. A new play area was created for the children. Cradles were repaired and painted and flowers and plants were brought in to enhance the environment. The final touch was a Christmas tree that was brought in and decorated, much to the delight of children and staff at the centre.

Oracle Slovakia supports Magic Days 2006 Stop, relax and take time out from the hectic pre-Christmas rush - that was the theme of the Magic Days 2006 event staged at the Aupark entertainment and shopping centre in Bratislava during December 2006. A team of 46 Oracle volunteers who gave up more than 300 hours of their time, partnered with the civic association, Grey Bear, and other organisers to establish a children’s festival at the centre aimed at encouraging creativity among children as custodians of the cultural, social and human values of future generations. This public event, which included participation by children from five orphanages supported by Grey Bear, featured non-stop performances by children from all kinds of schools on the main stage. There was also a movie festival and a charity fair. Parallel workshops where organised where children could create little Christmas presents or decorations or participate in drama classes, design cars, take photos as festival journalists, or paint old washing machines! Needless to say, a great time was had by all and we look forward to maintaining the Magic Days tradition well into the future. MORE

Oracle Slovakia keeps up tradition First established in 1998 when six people in the office spontaneously came up with the idea, the donation of blood is the oldest CSR initiative among Oracle Slovakian employees. The blood donor initiative has been supported by a number of individuals every year since then and in 2006 it was formally registered as a Volunteer’s project. This status has enabled us to recruit 27 volunteers, including eight first-time donors, to donate blood on a regular basis (usually 4 times a year). In total, there were over 15 litres of blood donated during the last run. MORE

Oracle Slovakia uplifts children’s rehabilitation centre Children are the light beams into the human future. It is essential to grow them, to teach them, to love them, to care... Children’s Rehabilitation Centre TETIS is one of only a few centres of its kind in Slovakia that helps children and their families deal with and overcome the stressful mental and physical challenges associated with birth defects and disability. TETIS enables families to overcome these problems together. The centre provides facilities for parents to stay over with their child and be as close to them as they can, which is why you will often see mothers going for a walk with their babies and playing in the centre’s lovely gardens. There is also a small kindergarten and a school with qualified teachers ready to give lessons. Classes are attractively decorated with pictures and paintings on the walls of flowers, animals and fairy tale creatures. Children are encouraged to play and have fun in between the professional daily healthcare procedures.

The centre is fighting for survival with virtually no support from the state. In fact, stringent state laws impose severe restrictions on the institution’s ability to raise funds and receive grants. That is why the TETIS is desperate for and always extremely grateful when volunteers step in to lend a hand. During September 2006, a team of Oracle Slovakia volunteers visited the centre during the Global Volunteer Day. One Oracle volunteer group helped with the cutting down of branches from trees that posed a danger to the children and went on to clean up the garden to provide space for the children to play. Another group painted the fence around the area and moved furniture to create more space for activities in the centre. The centre’s internal IT systems were also addressed by the Oracle team with new LAN cables being installed to improve their PC network infrastructure. MORE

At first glance this place, situated close to the capital Bratislava, does not even look like a centre dedicated to dealing with extremely difficult health problems. However, when you look below the surface and spend some time there, as we did during the GVD, you discover the cruel reality.

While the Oracle team may have saved the centre some money, the repayment in terms of the smiles on the faces of the children and gratitude expressed by staff at the centre was far more rewarding and overwhelming than we could ever have anticipated.

Oracle Slovenia gets to grips with the basics In setting out to decide what they could do to help others, Oracle Slovenia employees started off by deciding what it was they were good at. They came to the conclusion that they are pretty good at transferring knowledge and that they know something about computers. Based on this “realisation” they decided they would like to help “disadvantaged” children learn how to use a computer and also how to use the computer to find and use information in the learning process.

a popular singer or a place they would like to visit. Before the session ended, several children were able to write and send their first e-Mail message. The session was an extremely gratifying and rewarding experience for the Oracle volunteers, who all noted how excited the children were by things that they take for granted – such as a getting into a lift to travel up to the next floor! MORE

The Oracle team then formed a partnership with Mozaik, a charity-based organisation that works with children in refugee camps and among asylum seekers. The team then prepared a programme to cover a full range of activities to be hosted at the Mozaik facilities before scrapping this idea in favour of inviting the children to attend the Oracle University. Mosaik volunteers brought the children to OU where seven Oracle volunteers met them. The group was drawn from a diverse range of national backgrounds and languages. Several children were totally illiterate while many others were not attending school because of their special and extremely difficult circumstances. Despite these difficulties, a “common language” and effective communication was quickly established among all participants and the children were soon acting like any other “whiz-kid” – surfing the Net to find information about

Oracle Slovenia hits the paper trail It’s early days yet, but a personal initiative launched by a Gorazd Vidmar, a colleague from Oracle University, is aiming to achieve a 95% recycling rate for waste paper generated in the Oracle Slovenia offices. Gorazd decided recently that it would be a good idea to start separating garbage in the Oracle University training centre. However, he soon discovered that the cleaning ladies were not prepared to handle multiple garbage bags so he was forced to find another solution. He found a centre for paper recycling and then introduced cardboard boxes left over from the delivery of training materials into our HW room to be used for the collection of waste paper. It has taken us some time to get used to the discipline of ensuring that we use the cardboard boxes, but we are getting there. Gorazd still takes care of transporting the waste paper to the collection point. At the FY07 Kick-off meeting, we presented Gorazd’s initiative and it has now been adopted by the main office. We can't guarantee that 95% of paper will go to recycling but we are doing our best to get there. MORE

Oracle Slovenia makes good use of depreciated computers When the Oracle University training centre in Slovenia geared up for the new 10g courses, several personal computers were found to be more than six years old and unsuitable for use.

Two more PCs were donated to the Children's Home Malci Beliceve in Ljubljana - a home for children temporarily removed from their families because of unbearable living conditions due to illness, alcohol or drug abuse among their parents.

Already fully depreciated in the company's books, these PCs sat around gathering dust as, according to Oracle policy, they could not be donated or given way. Finally our financial director found a private company authorised to buy the PCs for resale. Oracle employees came up with a far better idea – they decided to club together to buy the PCs from Oracle on the same terms as the private company and then devote their time to checking out and preparing the PCs so that they could be donated to worthy recipients. This programme got underway with the first PC being donated to Beli obroc, a charity that helps sexually abused children. The charity handed over the PC to a child who was sexually abused and whose story was featured on a local television show. The second PC was delivered to the Red Cross to be handed over to a couple with five children who lost everything when a fire destroyed their home. Another PC was given to single mother with two small children. The children were desperate for a PC.

Oracle Turkey employees go on a shopping spree Ikitelli, a suburb of Istanbul where the poorest of poor people live, was the focus for the Oracle Turkey Volunteer Day programme with employees deciding that their efforts would be dedicated to helping to make a difference in the lives of children living in this poverty-stricken area. The project started out with a visit to the Hazine Primary School in Ikitelli where the Oracle team met with teachers to select the most deserving beneficiaries for the Volunteers Day programme.

The Volunteer Day activity has since been extended by several Oracle employees who have decided to provide personally-sponsored scholarships to children to enable them concentrate on their education. Selim, a 10-yer-old child who is benefiting from one of these “employee scholarships”, has four younger brothers and sisters. His father is sick and unable to work. Selim sells water after school in an effort to support the family. The scholarship provides him with enough money to give up work and concentrate on his studies.

After consulting with teachers at the school, 22 children from 10 of the poorest families in the community were chosen – a highly emotional and difficult task as there were so many children who are so deserving and desperate for help. Most children in the school live in overcrowded conditions. Their parents are unemployed and in many cases suffer from severe health problems. Many children work after school to help support the family. As Volunteer Day took place only two weeks before the Eid, Oracle employees decided to take the 22 children on a shopping spree. Early that morning a bus arrived at their school to pick them up, along with their mother or an older sister and their teacher. The bus then delivered the party to a major clothing outlet where the children were invited to buy whatever they wanted. Oracle employees, who accompanied the children, had tremendous fun helped them in the efforts to buy out the shop.

Oracle Russia sponsors “JUNIO-R” camp "JUNIO-R", an educational scientific summer camp for children situated on the beautiful Black Sea coast, played host to a team of consultants from Oracle Russia during the 2006 season. Apart from enjoying the summer delights and the many other activities of the holiday season, “JUNIO-R” provides children with the opportunity to work in teams on a number of multi-disciplinary IT projects that are based on business games and role-plays. The Oracle team ran a number of seminars and projects for children where they also learned about Oracle as a corporation and Oracle products, including the basics of database design. One of the highlights for the children was a fascinating discussion (workshop) on the subject “How technology changes business environment and our daily life in the 21st century”, facilitated by Oracle consultant Alexey Veremeev.
