EXPEDITION Per for mance/Handling 5.4L SOHC 16V Triton V-8 engine

This year’s Source Book presents Expedition features and benefits in five key purchase motivator categories.

Optional on XLT and Eddie Bauer 4x2 models Standard on Eddie Bauer 4x4 models • Sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection optimizes combustion and performance by precisely timing fuel delivery to each intake port

These categories — Performance/Handling, Comfort/Convenience, Safety/Security, Quality/Reliability/Durability and Design/Styling — are provided in each vehicle section of this book. Their length and order may vary, depending on their relevance to the individual vehicle. This format replaces the previous six-position Walkaround, and allows you to easily find and present information as it relates to the customer.

• 260 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque • Fail-safe engine cooling system • Deep-skirt cast iron engine block and low-friction internal components for greater reliability and improved fuel economy

4.6L SOHC 16V TritonTM V-8 engine

• Forged steel crankshaft for outstanding durability — even under heavy-duty commercial use

Standard on XLT and Eddie Bauer 4x2 models • 240 horsepower and 293 lb.-ft. of torque provide responsive performance on- and off-road

• Coil-on-plug ignition system replaces spark plug wires and coil for reduced weight and more energy at the plug

• Sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection precisely monitors the timing of fuel delivered to each intake port

Fail-safe cooling system

• Fail-safe engine cooling system

Standard on all models

• Design is less complex than OHV engines, has fewer moving parts and provides a finer level of valve control

• Designed to help protect engine from potential damage due to loss of coolant • System enables the vehicle to be operated temporarily in order to reach a service facility

• Deep-skirt engine block and low-friction internal components for greater reliability and improved fuel economy

• Distance vehicle can be driven depends upon outside temperatures, vehicle load and terrain • If engine overheats, it will automatically switch from eight-cylinder operation to alternating fourcylinder operation

• Silent-design chain cam drive increases durability and helps reduce noise, vibration and harshness

• Engine coolant temperature gauge will move into “red” area • “Service Engine Soon” warning light will illuminate, alerting driver that immediate vehicle service is required • Vehicle will operate with limited engine power • Continued operation will increase engine temperature, causing engine to completely shut down and vehicle to coast to a stop • As engine temperature cools, engine may be restarted, and vehicle should be driven directly to a service facility to minimize engine damage

Electronically controlled four-speed automatic overdrive transmission

Control-TracTM Permanent Four-wheel Drive

Standard on all models

Standard on all 4x4 models

• Fully electronic shift control provides a wide range of smooth shifts for outstanding performance

• Provides drivers with flexible access to extra traction provided by A4WD, 4H and 4L

• Overdrive lowers engine rpm at highway speeds for optimum performance

• When A4WD is engaged and electronic sensors detect a loss of traction, an electromagnetic clutch locks front and rear driveshafts together until traction is regained. This setting provides 4WD as required without additional driver input

• Lockup torque converter downsized for efficiency and high-rpm engine use • 100 percent of torque is converted mechanically in third and fourth gears

• System provides 4L mode for low-speed (under 35 mph) driving where maximum traction and torque are required, such as in deep sand, on steep grades or when pulling a boat out of water

• Gear ratios selected for maximum utilization of engine’s broad torque range; provides increased output of low-gear torque and enhances start-up performance

• At normal speeds on low-traction surfaces, Control-Trac provides 4H. The transfer case is engaged and splits engine torque about 50/50 between front and rear wheels. This mode is to be used for severe weather or off-road conditions such as deep snow, ice or shallow sand

• Overdrive transmission control switch mounted on shift lever locks out overdrive fourth gear when additional engine torque is needed or to obtain third-gear engine braking on downgrades • Uses Mercon V automatic transmission fluid that requires changing under normal operating conditions at 30,000-mile intervals. Under severe operation, such as heavy trailering, transmission fluid needs to be changed at 21,000-mile intervals

Explain the differences between the three settings. A4WD is a “set-and-forget” function that provides full-time permanent four-wheel-drive capabilities. Set the system in A4WD and it will automatically send torque to the front wheels only when road conditions require. 4L should be used only at speeds under 35 mph and never on dry pavement. 4H is used at normal speeds on roads with low-traction surfaces, such as a snow-covered highway.

• Features an automatic tow/haul feature on the 4R100 4-speed automatic transmission with the 5.4L TritonTM V-8 engine – Transmission computer module continuously monitors sensors located in the engine and adjusts powertrain parameters to deliver smooth, predictable power

17" Cast Aluminum Wheels with Chrome Hub Cover and P275/60R17 OWL all-season tires

– Transmission shift parameters will be adjusted for hilly terrain, changes in altitude or when towing heavy loads

Optional on 4x4 XLT Standard on Eddie Bauer • Enhance appearance, ground clearance and off-road traction

– No button need be pressed, requires no driver interaction

• Cast Aluminum Wheels add an upscale appearance

17" Ten-Spoke Cast Aluminum Wheels with Bright Hub Cover and P265/70R17 OWL all-terrain tires Included with Premium Sport Appearance Group • Larger diameter wheels increase ground clearance • Cast Aluminum Wheels add an upscale appearance

EXPEDITION Safety/Secur ity

Four-wheel disc Anti-lock Braking System

Rear door child-safety locks

Standard on all models

Standard on all models

• The Four-wheel disc Anti-lock Braking System offers a higher resistance to brake fade than conventional front disc/rear drum system

• When activated, prevent passengers from opening rear doors from the inside • A toggle switch on the rear door frame activates and deactivates child-safety locks

• ABS monitors and controls brake pressure to each front wheel individually, and both rear wheels together

• The toggle switch is inaccessible when the door is closed

• Impending wheel lockup is detected before any of the four wheels actually skid

Ask the customer to sit in the rear seating area of the vehicle. Activate the rear door child-safety locks and close the door. Ask the customer to open the door. Explain that this feature was designed to help keep children safe while riding in the vehicle.

• Brake pressure to the wheel (or both rear wheels) that may lock is pumped several times per second. The action of the electric pump can be heard as a rapid clicking sound, and a faint pulse can often be felt through the brake pedal — this is normal and indicates that the system is operating as intended

Remote Keyless Entry System with driver’s-side door keypad

• This pumping action helps prevent the wheel or wheels from locking, enabling the driver to maintain steering control even during severe braking

Standard on all models • Unlocks the driver’s door, all doors or the liftgate • Includes a Panic button which, when activated, sounds the horn and flashes the exterior lights

• In real-world driving situations, the benefits of ABS are most often seen when braking on rain-soaked or snow-covered roads

• Transmitters can be used to lock and unlock doors from up to 33 feet away

• Remember that the driver should never pump the brakes on a vehicle equipped with ABS

• Driver’s-side door-mounted keypad allows keyless entry with a preprogrammed personal identification number

If space is available, demonstrate ABS in your parking lot or on an empty stretch of roadway. Apply the brakes quickly and have the customer listen for unfamiliar sounds associated with ABS. Then have the customer test the ABS to familiarize themselves with the normal brake pedal pulsation.

Illuminated Entry System Standard on all models • Turns on interior light when remote key fob button is activated

Side door intrusion beams

• Maintains interior lighting for 25 seconds or until ignition is turned on

Standard on all models • Help protect occupants in certain side impacts

SecuriLockTM passive anti-theft system

Adjustable-height three-point front lap/shoulder safety belts

Standard on all models

Standard on all models

• Uses an electronically coded ignition key with 72 quadrillion possible codes to start the vehicle

• Adjustable front shoulder restraint height provides increased comfort

• If the key does not have the correct code, the vehicle will not start

• Three-point safety belts are standard for all outboard seating positions

• The system is automatically armed when the key is removed from the ignition and is disarmed when the correct key is reinserted into the ignition

• Adjustable D-rings allow personalized adjustment of front seat safety belt height and driver’s-side second-row safety belts

Have the customer try to start the vehicle with a key that belongs to another Expedition. Explain that the specially coded key transmits a radio signal to a small transmitter in the steering column. When the wrong key is inserted, the vehicle won’t start. This is why it’s such an effective anti-theft system.

• Automatic locking retractors (ALRs) are standard on all outboard passenger seating positions to help secure portable child-safety seats (always place children in the rear seats, properly restrained)

Second Generation Driver and Front Passenger Airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)(1)

• The Second Generation Airbag Supplemental Restraint System, in conjunction with the threepoint safety belt system, is intended to help reduce injuries in certain moderate-to-severe frontal and near-frontal collisions. It is not a substitute for safety belts. Remind customers to always wear their safety belts, and that children under 12 years of age and infants in child-safety seats should never ride in a seat equipped with an airbag

• Refer to the Owner Guide for the location of the switch, as well as specific reset instructions and warnings

Side-impact Airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Optional on all models • The airbags are mounted in the bolsters of the front seats and are designed to enhance protection of the head and chest of front-seat occupants in certain side impacts • Remind your customers to always wear their safety belts and place children in the rear seat, properly restrained
