Keratin is the raw material forming hair, and accounts for 95% of its final structure. It is a material common to all types of hair. It is an essential component of hair, a protein formed of a combination of 18 amino acids including cysteine, which is rich in sulfur and plays a vital role in the cohesion of hair. It is responsible for the strength and resistance of our hair.
A cross-section of a hair shows the cells of the cortex. These are long cells joined together by an intercellular cement rich in lipids and proteins, and combined with keratins. We also discover small black granules, the melanin granules, responsible for the colour of the hair.

Do you recommend using the Subtil Keratin care programme at a particular time of year? Apart from the summer, when the sun, sea and chlorine can be particularly damaging, there is not really any specific time when hair changes dramatically. In fact, hair is under stress from chemicals, brushing and the environment day after day. The SUBTIL KERATIN care program can be used throughout the year on hair that needs attention.
Are sulfates contra-indicated after a Subtil Keratin maintenance course? Keratin-based care treatments and sulfates are not incompatible in the sense that they do not produce a chemical reaction. However, certain sulfates have a slightly drying effect, which can damage hair that has already been weakened and therefore adversely affect Keratin levels. So it is always better to use shampoo that does not contain sulfates when repairing and rebuilding hair!
What do sulfates do? There are many different "sulfates", it is a family of chemicals. But those found in Subtil Care shampoos are highly effective foaming and washing agents, gentle and friendly to hair, skin and the environment. They are combined with other raw materials of outstanding quality that compensate for their slightly drying nature. This is the art involved when our research and development engineers formulate our products. Is the SUBTIL KERATIN care programme compatible with Brazilian hair-smoothing treatment? Absolutely. This care program nourishes and moisturizes the hair deep down, so it is compatible with all hair-straightening techniques. SUBTIL KERATIN treatments are also particularly well suited to hair receiving regular chemical treatments (coloring, highlights, color removal, etc.) due to the absence of sulfates in their formulation.
