in 1974 in a shed in the remote north west of Australia, Dr. Patricia Kailis AM OBE opened the first specialty pearl jewellery store in Broome, the home of the iconic Australian South Sea pearl. Over the next four decades the company grew and evolved into Kailis Australian Pearls, a luxury brand launched in 2002. The brand is founded on Dr. Kailis’ passion for pearls and how they are set into luxurious jewellery designs. Dr. Kailis’ own style is embodied in the way Kailis pearls are designed to be worn for all occasions. She added a modern Australian influence to the timelessness of pearl jewellery, creating a brand to be shared with other gracious women of style and confidence.

Dr. Patricia Hurse took the brave step for a young female doctor from a solid middle class family in Melbourne to step aboard a ship bound for Perth in 1958. Strong of mind and character, Dr. Hurse made quite an impression on the doctors in Perth which lead to her chance meeting with the feisty son of Greek immigrants, Michael George Kailis, whom she married in a simple ceremony in 1960. It was the proceeds from the sale of Dr. Kailis’ car which funded Michael’s first fishing venture that was the foundation of one of Australia’s leading marine corporations, the MG Kailis Group of companies, of which Kailis Australian Pearls is proudly a part. Broome’s reputation as the home of the Australian South Sea pearl was not yet established when Michael and Patricia built their first farm in the clear, clean waters of Roebuck Bay. When disease threatened to
kill the oysters and their pearling dreams, Dr. Kailis ventured out to the remote farms to save them. By introducing hygienic handling practices of the oyster shells she set new standards for the rest of the industry. A woman of great achievement, Dr. Kailis dedicated her life to her family and the community. Over a 40 year period she juggled raising 4 children with a career as a world renowned genetic researcher and counsellor that helped countless families afflicted with genetically transmittable diseases. The Kailis woman is one of sophistication, style and achievement. Like Dr. Kailis, she is genuine, has earned her pearls and has the confidence to wear them when and how she sees fit. It is with her, and you, in mind that we design every piece of luxurious jewellery that makes a hero of these precious pearls.
the gracious woman For centuries in greece the Kailis family have earned their living from the sea, the same sea from which Aphrodite emerged covered in pearls. This Greek goddess is a symbol of love, romance and purity of the ocean. She represents the essence of the Kailis woman who is strong, calm and commands attention. Dr. Kailis added a modern Australian influence to the timelessness of pearl jewellery, creating a brand to be shared with other gracious women of style and confidence.
a commitment to quality Before we even craft a piece of jewellery, we let nature run its course. Every Kailis pearl is born from the Pinctada Maxima oyster, the largest oyster variety in the world found in the pristine waters off the remote north west coast of Australia. It takes two years of nurturing for the oyster to produce a single Kailis pearl. The Pinctada Maxima oysters produce some of the thickest nacres in the world, resulting in pearls with lustre, colour and size more precious than any other. This rare combination of elements is what makes a Kailis pearl one of the most desirable and valuable in the world.
Less than 10% of pearls harvested are selected by Kailis for our jewellery. These pearls are naturally beautiful and require no treatment of any kind. Each pearl is assessed to our strict brand standards before being set into jewellery by our master jewellers.

It is a promise to our customers that the piece of jewellery they hold in their hands is a genuine piece from Kailis, featuring only the highest quality materials and natural Australian South Sea pearls. the five virtues of pearls The Kailis name is synonymous with the most sought after Australian South Sea pearls, each so naturally beautiful they require no treatment of any kind. Every pearl that carries the Kailis brand mark is hand selected based on five natural virtues of lustre, shape, size, colour and surface quality.

i. l u s t r e Lustre is the most important virtue to consider when selecting a pearl and describes the luminous quality of the pearl surface. Pearls have an astounding ability to capture light and radiate it as its own. Light reflects through the countless layers of nacre, appearing as though it is coming from deep within the pearl. Lustre depends on the quality and quantity of the nacre produced by the oyster and a superior lustre can be seen when your reflection is clearly visible on the pearl surface. Australian South Sea pearls have the most naturally illuminating lustre of all pearl types and require no additional treatment of any kind.

iii. s i z e The Pinctada Maxima oyster is the largest pearl producing oyster in the world, taking 2 years to produce a single Australian South Sea pearl. As a result, our pearls have a naturally thick and lustrous nacre and range in size from 10mm up to 20mm in diameter.

iv. c o l o u r Australian South Sea pearls can come in a variety of hues, from moonlit ivory to pink and silver. These colours can be seen on the inside of the oyster shell. Pearls with a pink or white hue can be extremely captivating as they appear glowing against the skin. The more silvery hues of the Australian South Sea pearl can be just as lustrous and are typically set in white gold design.

v. s h a p e The Australian South Sea pearl comes in a variety of different shapes, each as individually beautiful as the next. From the incredibly rare and perfect round pearl, to the unique shapes of baroque and circle pearls, Kailis jewellery showcases a range of shapes in our contemporary jewellery designs.
