GLOVE STANDARDS European and AS/NZS 2161 Glove Standards Requirements Overview The Australian/ New Zealand Glove standards have been based on the European standards to ensure safety in the workplace. The following sections of the EN standards and AS/ NZS 2161 Occupational Protective Gloves, relate to WSP products: t EN 420: 2003 (AS/NZS 2161.2:2005) General requirements t EN 388: 2003 (AS/NZS 2161.3:2005) Protection against mechanical risks t EN 407:1994 (AS/NZS 2161,4:1999) Protection against Thermal risks (heat and fire)
EN 388: 2003 (AS/NZS 2161.3:2005) Protection Against Mechanical Risks The AS/NZS 2161.3 Occupational Protective Glove Standards (EN 388) applies to all protective gloves used in conditions of physical and mechanical hazards. All gloves bearing the EN388 pictogram are tested and rated for its ability to protect against four categories. Higher ratings indicating better performance

t ABRASION (Max 4)
t EN 374-3:2003 (AS/NZS 2161.10.3:2005) Determination of resistance to permeation by chemicals
t PUNCTURE (Max 4)
General requirements include: t Design and construction is suited to intended use t Any seams present, do not significantly decrease product performance t Does not harm the health or hygiene of the user Dexterity: t 5 performance levels, determined by tests in which metal bars of various diameters are picked up PH value: t All gloves are checked for compliance in terms of the pH value greater than 3.5 and less than 9.5 Sizing t Glove sizing conforms to set specifications with respect to hand circumference t Minimum glove lengths are specified for each size

EN 420: General Requirements All WSP gloves are compliant to EN 420:2003 which specifies the general requirements for glove construction, high visibility, innocuousness, cleaning, comfort and efficiency, marking and information applicable to occupational protective gloves.

EN 374-2:2003 (AS/NZS 2161.10.2:2005) Protective gloves against chemicals and micro-organisms - Determination of resistance to penetration
EN 374
AS/NSZ 2161.10.2:2005 is based on EN 374-2:2003 to specify the method for the determination of the resistance of protective gloves to penetration. The primary test is an air leak test, and gloves meeting this Standard are considered to be suitable for use against biologically hazardous material.

This standard applies to protective gloves which protect the hands against heat and/or flames in one or more of the following forms: fire, contact heat, convective heat, radiant heat, small splashes or large quantities of molten metal. DESIGN FEATURES Synthetic Coatings
Lining
Coated fabric gloves can be used for a multitude of tasks ranging from handling bricks, glass and wire to chemical laboratory applications.
Gloves are cotton lined for wearing comfort and aid in sweat absorption. The double lining in WSP’s Premium Red Welders (see pg 20) also provides additional insulation against heat.
They are made by dipping fabric liners in a synthetic material, such as latex, nitrile, PVC (poly-vinyl chloride) and PU (polyurethane). This process transforms it into multi-purpose hand protection glove with slipresistant, abrasion-resistant and/or chemical-resistant qualities. As a general rule, the thicker the coating, the greater the chemical and abrasion resistance. However thicker gloves may impair grip and dexterity which impacts on safety.
Cuff Designs KNITTED WRISTBAND: fitted at wrist to prevent debris or dirt from entering the glove. SAFETY CUFF: Provides additional wrist protection and allows hands to be easily released from the glove. GAUNTLET: Longer cuff for extended arm protection.
Coating Finishes
BEADED CUFF: Reinforces the cuff to reduce likelihood of tearing especially when wearing or removing the glove.
SMOOTH: Most economical, but has no additional gripping capability.
VELCRO FASTENING: For excellent fit and secure wrist closure for WSP’s mechanics glove (pg 8-9).
ROUGH: Economical, improved gripping capability SANDY: Excellent gripping capability (see doubledipped green PVC gloves - pg 19) ETCHED: Channels away oil and liquids for maximum gripping capabilities. ROUGH-CHIP: Unique pebbled textured glove specifically designed for horticultural (see Grissly PCB L26 - pg 21)

MATERIALS & PROPERTIES Synthetic Leather
PU (Polyurethane)
The synthetic leather used in WSP’s Mechanics range (pg 10-11) is a versatile alternative to traditional cow/pig grain leathers. The material is durable and machine washable which significantly reduces the cost-per-wear the glove.
PU is a versatile polymer with great stretch, strength and softness. It possess excellent flexibility and gripping properties without being sticky making it an ideal glove coating material for precision work and handling of small parts.
PVC (Poly-Vinyl Chloride)
Nitrile
PVC are suitable for use with many water-soluble chemicals including cleaning products with acidic and alkaline properties. However protection against organic solvents are limited.
Nitrile gloves are ideal for jobs requiring dexterity and sensitivity. In addition, these gloves stand up to heavy use even after prolonged exposure to substances that cause other gloves to deteriorate.
Latex (Rubber)
They offer protection when working with oils, greases, acids, caustics and alcohols but are generally not suitable for use with strong oxidizing agents, aromatic solvents, ketones and acetates.
Latex has outstanding tensile strength, elasticity and temperature resistance properties. It is also about to resist abrasions caused by grinding and polishing, and most water solutions of acids, alkalis, salts and ketones. This makes them a popular general-purpose glove material. Latex gloves may not be appropriate for all employees due to latex allergies. In this case, some alternatives to consider include hypoallergenic gloves, glove liners and powder-free gloves.
WORKFORCE SAFETY PRODUCTS
Cut Resistant TAEKI 5 Yarn This composite material achieves the highest level in cut resistance and versatility. It remains comfortable during extended periods of wear in wet, dusty or oily conditions. Being machine-washable and lint free, it is also economical and suitable for ‘clean room’ applications (see the full TAEKI 5 range on pg 12-13).
LEATHER RIGGERS Leather Leather is among the most popular glove material. Along with great fit and dexterity, leather gloves can protect against rough objects, sustained heat, sparks and abrasion. Types of Leather PREMIUM GRAIN COWHIDE: Strong and supple leather. It has the best abrasion resistance and puncture resistance. Oil and water repellant. SPLIT COWHIDE: Good abrasion resistance and more economical than premium grain. Rough texture of leather offers better grip. PREMIUM GRAIN PIGSKIN: Soft, supple leather. Performs well in wet applications as it remains pliable after being soaked in water and dried out
Hide Cuts SIDE CUT LEATHER: Most durable cut and provides the most protection and durability due to it’s dense fibre density. SHOULDER CUT LEATHER: More economical and less durable compared to side cut leather. BELLY CUT LEATHER: The most economical cut with the least consistent texture and appearance.

PVC CHEMICAL GLOVES Matching Gloves to Chemical Tasks How to choose a suitable glove design when handling dangerous chemicals? Some factors to consider are:
Dexterity required Thicker double dipped coatings provide greater resistance to chemicals and mechanical damage while a single dip allows better dexterity and grip. If certain components of the task have greatly differing requirements, it may be necessary to use a few types of gloves simultaneously.
Cuff lengths Extra-length gloves may be required when dealing with large volumes of liquid which may slop over the top of a shorter glove. Ideally the sleeve of the protective clothing and the top of the glove should overlap as stretching forward can leave parts of the arm exposed.
Working conditions - wet or oily? When working in wet or oiling conditions, textured surface finishes provide a more secure grip. Our PVC gloves are available in a smooth (red PVC), sand textured (green PVC) or rough-chip (black PVC) finish.
Physical hazards The EN 388 shield featured on the PVC glove indicates its ability to protect against mechanical damage. The higher the EN 388 rating, the higher the resistance to abrasion, puncture, tear and cut.

DISPOSABLE RESPIRATORS Disposable Respirator Standards Requirements Overview AS/NZS 1715:1994 Selection, use and maintenance of Respiratory protective devices This standard sets out the principles of respiratory protection and makes recommendations for the selection, use and maintenance of respirators for personal protection against atmospheres deficient in oxygen or against harmful substances.
AS/NZS 1716:2003 Respiratory Protective Devices This standard specifies requirements for respiratory protection devices intended to provide protection against atmospheres containing substances, which may be harmful if breathed. The standard specifies requirements, performance and testing criteria to be observed in the manufacture of respirators.
Respirator Selection P2 and P2v Disposable Respirators: P2 dust/mist and fume respirators with adjustable plastic nose clip and soft foam nosepiece for comfortable custom fit. P2 designated respirators provide protection against thermally generated fumes and smoke when, for example, welding; soldering; brazing; metal cutting or pouring. P2v Disposable Respirators with valve The P2v valve makes breathing easier, cooler and also extends the life of the mask. P2vc Carbon Disposable Respirator with valve P2vc are covered with active carbon to pre-filter organic vapours, and feature an adjustable plastic nose clip and soft foam nosepiece for comfortable, custom fit. These respirators also contain active carbon, protecting against mechanically generated particulates and mists of sizes commonly encountered in industry, and mining dusts (i.e. Coal, copper, zinc, lead; dusts from fibreglass, asbestos, timber, cement). The valve adds comfort and helps to extend the longevity of the mask.

Operating Conditions Operational temperature range for use 0 to +50 degrees C Disposable respirators are not suitable for use in: t Oxygen deficient atmospheres (less than 18%) t Atmospheres immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) containing toxic gases or vapours. t Areas where the particulate concentration exceeds 10 times the occupational exposure limit. t Highly toxic atmospheres (refer to AS/NSZ1716)
How often should they be replaced? Disposable respirators are designed to last throughout an 8 hour shift. However, the effectiveness of the respirator will deteriorate faster in hot, dusty, humid conditions or in the presence of oil and oil mists. Please note that respirators should not be cleaned or reused. Instead, replace the entire mask when shift ends or if the filter medium becomes clogged.
How should they be stored? It is recommended to store the respirators at 20~30°C in a clean dry environment.

Fitting Instructions

To fit the mask, start by holding the mask with the nosepiece facing up and head straps dangling down

Position the mask under the chin and over the mouth and nose.

Pull lower strap over the head and position below ears. Pull top strap over the head and position above ears.

Press on the nosepiece to mould it snugly around the nose.
5
To test seal, cup both hands over the mask and exhale vigorously. Reposition mask and straps if air leaks around the edges.

As a comprehensive gloves manufacturer, QS houses PU, nitrile and PVC glove factories as well as knitting facilities and tanneries for producing raw materials. Recent developments include the TAEKI 5 range of highest cut resistant gloves and the water based Miizu.
In addition, these testing abilities cover the entire design and manufacturing process - from raw materials to finished products. Tests can be conducted across the full range of mechanical or chemical risk factors to the strict specifications required of ISO, CE or ANSI standards.
