INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROJECT TRASH MADE IS A COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL JEWELLERY, FASHION AND INTERIOR ACCESSORIES MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS. NEW LIFE FOR OLD ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES!

WHAT IS TRASH MADE? Trash Made products are design objects with their own story. They are made from material and components that have already been used and discarded to be recycled or destroyed. These components fascinate by the diversity of their shapes, colours and materials and easily show their creative potential. Trash Made only fulfils their wish for another life and gives them new shape, function and life energy. The aim of Trash Made is to inspire its users, therefore each object is connected with a special story. Trash Made was for the first time presented at Days of Design at Prague, Designblok 2009.

WHO IS TRASH MADE? Trash Made is organised by REMA System, company that provides organization of collection, sorting and recycling of waste-electrical and electronic appliances. Our team consists of a group of artists, designers and clients of sheltered workshops. Together we give new life to parts of old appliances and aim to create products which, even though made from recycled materials, are safe and keep a high quality and craft standard.

TRASH MADE COLLECTION Our products vary not only by its purpose and used material, but also by its soul, which connects their past and new life. Each material is different and inspires to a different use. Collections are limited, because Trash Made follows the fast change of modern technologies, which still supply Trash Made with new and inspiring material.

ANIMALI

We are shaped by tangling and crumpling about 100 metres of thin cooper wire, which has originally been wound around the core of coils in electromagnetic relays.These have been used in different electrical appliances to create a magnetic field. Thanks to our material we are good at conducting electricity and heat. Therefore we feel the best in sunshine. Mind you, you’d better not plug us into any electrical outlet, or we could bite you! FOREST GANG

We look like if we have come from a forest, but in fact, we have come up from a heap of discarded printed circuit boards. These boards could have been used in some of thousands of electrical or electronic appliances, yet due to a production defect they have been sent straight to waste. Our green and beige colour, which reminds the colour of trees, is actually a mask created by a laminate base covered by an insulation layer. The pathways are not work of an electronic wood-worm, but result of thorough technical plan. They are created by soldering spots, to which electrical components are usually attached. BOARDED

We are cut from defective printed circuit boards, so called PCBs. These are used in all electrical appliances for mechanical fixing and electrical connection of electronic components. Thanks to our new function, we have a chance to live a life that would otherwise end right after our birth. Basic material for production of PCB is copper–laminated plastic. The green colour of a board is caused by an isolation layer, which leaves only soldering spots uncovered. For better orientation during a control or repair, a service print is printed on the mask. This print, which together with soldering spots indicates the electronic wood-worm´s pathways, creates unmistakable decor of the 21st century and fits to the dress, shoes or bag of any lover of new technologies. FREEZ

We used to be coolers, taking away excess heat produced during the operation of electronic components. The reverse side of these coolers was in tight contact with the body of a component –much like now. The front structured side transferred excess heat into the external environment. For us, this work was easy thanks to the natural conductivity of aluminium, copper, or alloys of the two and we didn´t need any further energy to work. Everything was provided by physical laws and the natural upward thermal movement of heated air. However, now you don´t have to be bothered by physical laws. HALOHALO

At one time, when waiting for a fixed phone line connection took years, phone boxes could be sure to have enough users. However, with expansion of new technologies, many phone boxes have become obsolete. Unlike London red phone boxes, protected as a cultural heritage, Czech ones ended up at an electronic graveyard. To save at least their most characteristic part, which had been touched by thousands of hands, we have created a collection of jewellery and accessories made from buttons of these street witnesses. The metal that forms these buttons hasn´t changed much at all during its use and we believe that also as jewels they will last much longer than products made from materials used more commonly nowadays. SUSHI

Our shape reminds a Japanese speciality, but otherwise we are closer to modern Japanese technology. We have been made from wires for transmition of electric current, that’s why our body is created by a copper wire covered by colourful spagetti insulation. In our previous life, the copper wire enabled conduction of electric currrent and insulation ensured that energy in the cable will travel in the correct direction. Check us out! TWISTED EARRINGS

We’re made from wires for transmition of electric tension, that´s why our base material is bendable current-cariing copper. Thanks to her and her workability, we have the most well-turned curves. Our wires are covered by colorful spaghetti insulation. In our previous life, this insulation helped us not to lose energy in the bunch of wires. We are made from one piece of aluminium radiator, whose function used to carry away the heat produced in computer power supplies. The radiator used to absorb heat energy at its simple end. Afterwards with the help of fan, it emitted the energy out of the computer at its other, forked, end. Today we derive benefit from characteristics of aluminium other than conductivity – One is its lightness, thanks to which we won´t overburden your ears. KOSMOS

Cosmos, Greek word, which means jewel, decoration or universe, is more than a name for us. Our past was hidden in the dark as deep as the depths of the universe. We were part of computer hard discs, where we separated discs full of data. Later on, when we became obsolete, it seemed that our destiny will lead us to the depths of a landfill. Although our graceful curves, fl exible body and cheerful colourful stripes remind of coral snakes, our past is completely unrelated to nature. Before we were changed to elegant necklaces, our offi cial name was “Protection sleeves ensuring scratch protection of cables”. It doesn´t sound to appealing, does it? Our future didn´t seem to appealing either. We became waste and we were determined to liquidation. Eventually we were lucky and we got new shape and future and we promise not to bite you. We are made from diodes that were in their previous life used in various electrical appliances as a throttle-valve for electricity. It´s function used to transmit energy only one way and regulate it´s stream. In the past diadem were used to decorate heads of kings and stood for a symbol of power or victory. TV RESIST

We are made from two similar looking parts: ceramic electrical resistors and capacitors, which you can fi nd inside your old CRT monitors or TV screens. Resistors are needed in an electric circuit to lower the density of an electric current. Capacitors are used to temporarily store an electric charge. The sudden discharge of a capacitor can release so much energy that they can be used in speed lamps or in medicine as a part of defibrilators. ROMANTIK RESIST

Their function is to lower electrical current or electric tension in an electric circuit. They also work as short-circuit protection. Multicoloured stripes on the surface of resistors are now only a decoration. However, in the past they used to sefve as a bar code showing characteristics of each resistor. Such information wouldn´t be all that important for most of us. The importatnt thing is that these resistors were able to resist an electric current and protect the electric network from overstress. If all the people had a similar system, doctors would no doubt be pleased by the subsequent decrease in heart-attacks. We are playful and small even though we used to be a part of big and serious machine. I am made with respect to environment. A pocket on my top is made from a foil, which used to be hidden inside a computer keyboard. The foil is printed with conductive pastes, which create conductive layers on its top and catch your attention by its original decor. The foil used to transfer information from your fingers to computer´s memory. Now it will guard your notes and ideas. Underneath it, there is recycled paper and a comic strip inspired by recycling. JACK - POCKET KNIFE

I have never been in nature as I have always been keener on technologies. I am covered by a printed circuit board, which normally serve as a part of various electrical appliances, where it mechanically attaches and electrically connects electrical components. When the printed circuit board was produced a mistake occurred, so it lost a chance to try the function that it was designed for. Luckily, thanks to its original decor, created by service print with soldering spots, it soon got a new function. Now it decorates my surface and pleasantly fits into your hand. UPSIDE DOWN

Upside down is not just our name but also the story of my creation. Printed circuit board that covers me would normally have the same function as the one that I have inside. It would connect all the components and transfer data between them. However, due to a production mistake, it´s life story was supposed to finish very fast. Luckily, the end of this story is also a beginning. The printed circuit board got new function to cover my top. BUTTERFLY BOWL

The multicoloured wires that I am created from used to be pressed together inside a cable for long long time. Their function used to be to facilitate phone calls in a telephone substation. After they fell silent forever, their destiny was a sad retirement at an e-waste dump. However, they have now been released and re-fashioned into my new freelybreathing form, thanks to which I can please you and your fruits or other rolling objects. JOYFUL CLOCK

Our center is created by two glass hard disc platters, covered by a thin magnetic layer. These discs used to be a part of common computers, which might have been used at your company or school. At that time, we didn´t think that these discs would be remoulded into a time-keeping machine, once they’d lost their ability be able to store and provide data. Different discs could rotate in computers or servers with a speed form 5 400 to 15 000 turns per minute. Nowadays the discs have calmed down so much that they are fine just with keeping watch over the turning of the hands on a clock. Colorful wire rays that decorate us used to transfer electric current for example in telephone substations. DISCO TIME

Inside us, there is a piece of history and lots of data. They are hidden in hard disc platters, which used to be a part of computers or servers and now they form our body. The discs used to turn very fast to keep up with the flow of new data. These data will forever remain mystery, but turning of our hands will always tell you what time it is. RAINBOW CLOCK

In ancient mythology, the rainbow was considered to be a path between Earth and Heaven or a symbol of creation and spiritual development. The rainbow that decorates us is also a symbol of transformation. It symbolises the connection between our new and old life, in which the harddiscs that we consist of were hidden inside computers and servers. Let´s get inspired! CRYSTAL

Imagine that you could dive into a crystal structure. Everything in there would be firm and geometric and there would be peace and silence. For me, such idea used to be inconceivable. Wires that twist around my structure were full of electric current and quiet was something that I could only dream of. Eventually the wires became obsolete and instead of becoming rubbish they got a new function. They will brighten your evenings and fill your home with crystalline peace. TUATARA

I owe my name to my similarity to scales of a prehistoric animal. Tuatara is a lizard, which lives on the Earth for thousands of years almost unchanged. As well as me, Tuatara carries a message from the past, but unlike Tuatara, you would have diffi culties to recognise me in the past. Foils that form my scales used to be hidden inside LCD screen and polarise passing light. I could tell you a lot about pictures, which I have seen before the screen broke down, but now I have another mission. I will direct the light in your room and give it a mysterious gleam. HARD DISCO BALL

I am made of 60 metal plates, which are covered by thin magnetic layer. In the past, much information has been written into this layer, but you can never find out which. Only when you weight me, you will realise, how big weight these data had. Discs could rotate in computers or servers with a speed ranging from 4500 to 15000 turns per minute. Such a speed! NIGHT GUARD

I am made from a computer power supply component that provides energy supply for a computer and guards circulation of air necessary for cooling of other components. Technically, compared to my previous life, I haven’t changed that much. I use original casing, cables connections, a switch and screws. However, my new function is different. MUCHLAK

I am your new best friend for long evenings not only by a computer. Especially if you have warm hearth and cold hands, you can warm them up on me. I will guard you during your night work and I will be happy if you pet me once in a while. I am also good at guarding those who are disturbed by nightmares. If you knew my pedigree, you would´t be surprised that my shiny coat is created by about 3000 metres of thin copper wire. This wire was created by untangling of coils, which were used to create magnetic field in relays. FENIX

I was born from a heap of discarded copper coils, that weight almost 3 kg. I am first of my family and no other will be the same. My soft feathers come from almost 14 kilometres of thin copper wire, gained from coils that used to be a part of electromagnetic relays and transformers. Transformation is my philosophy, it fascinates me. Please treat me carefully and I will reward you by attracting welcomed visitors into your home.
