Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano In early 2002, the Boston Globe began publication of a series of stories about clergy sexual abuse of children in the Archdiocese of Boston. The investigation by the paper was exhaustive and resulted in a 2003 Pulitzer Prize for the paper and its “Spotlight” investigative team of reporters.

The story of the investigation forms the basis of the soon-to-be-released fi lm titled “Spotlight,” to be shown in limited release in U.S. theaters beginning Nov. 6 and set for general release beginning Nov. 20. The drama from Open Roads Films is directed and co-written by Tom McCarthy and features several notable actors and actresses: Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo, Stanley Tucci and John Slattery. It debuted at the Venice Film Festival in September and has since received many positive advance reviews. For many Catholics and others, the fi lm will serve as a reminder of the continuing absolute need within the Church for uncompromising vigilance, accountability and, most of all, care of and solidarity with the victims of abuse and their families. The subject is sober-ing and the memories of those days of crisis within the Church remain disturbing and strong. More than a decade has passed since the sexual abuse crisis was revealed as a systemic failure within the fabric of the Church. During that time, the Church — at the local, national and international level — has made unprecedented strides in its efforts to eradicate the problem and to care for and make restitution to the victims of abuse. At the local level, the Diocese of Orange emerged early on with one of the most imaginative, effective, wide-ranging, transparent and committed series of measures to address the multifaceted issue. With the release of “Spotlight,” the diocese once again recognizes the opportunity to raise awareness of child sexual abuse and to reiterate its commitment to never allowing such a situation to occur again, remembering that life is precious and is to be protected at all levels. In June of 2002 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) instituted the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, a blueprint for dealing with the sexual abuse crisis in the Church, and pledged to promote healing and reconciliation with victim survivors of sexual abuse, guarantee an effective response to allegations of sexual abuse of minors, ensure the accountability of their procedures, and protect the faithful in the future. The Diocese of Orange responded to the charter’s publication immediately, and an unaffi liated auditing fi rm charged with verifying diocesan compliance with the charter’s mandates has found the Diocese of Orange to be in full compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People every year since its inception in 2003. More broadly, the diocese has publicly acknowledged past failings and has apologized personally to the victims of abuse and their families and has made clear its commitment to the fair resolution of every legitimate abuse claim. The bold initiative to settle the 2003 clergy abuse cases in a respectful and humble manner and to institute strict procedures for the protection of children and young people has been seen as a model for others. The diocese also took the unprecedented step of releasing all appropriate personnel files related to this settlement in May of 2005. In 2002 the diocese implemented a comprehensive approach to ensuring that children and teens are as safe as possible, employing a comprehensive background screening for all adults likely to be in contact with children—already more than 75,000 have been vetted. This process allows for the collection of a wide variety of past screening data, including extensive backgrounds checks and fingerprinting, and is designed to enhance already in place diocesan policies. Since 2002 all clergy, employees, and volunteers have been required to undergo Safe Environment Training. In 2014 alone, the diocese trained 286 priests, 115 deacons, 1,664 teachers and more than 25,500 school employees and volunteers. Diocesan schools and religious education classes at parishes and diocesan centers also provide Safe Environment education for children. This procedure is suited to their age and level of understanding. In 2014, nearly 44,000 children participated in this critically important awareness program.

STOP ASSISTED SUICIDE Stop Assisted Suicide in CA before it’s too late! Earlier this year, through a Special Session, the CA legislature passed assisted suicide, allowing doctors to prescribe overdose medication to terminally ill patients. Join a coalition of physicians, nurses, disability-rights organizations, and people of all faiths to stand for the lives of our elderly and dying and oppose assisted suicide! On November 22, Christ the King Sunday, petitions will be available for signature outside of Masses. Signers must be registered to vote and can only sign once. Why Oppose Assisted Suicide? • Sends the Wrong Message: Legalizing suicide for the terminally ill, while discouraging it for the rest of the population, teaches that the lives of the ill and disabled do not matter to our society. • Will Worsen Patient Care: Patients in other states, like Barbara Wagner in Oregon, are being denied treatment prescribed by their doctors, and instead offered drugs for assisted suicide. • Will Increase Non-Terminal Suicide Rates: Suicides skyrocket when assisted suicide is legalized. Oregon's suicide rate for non-terminal people increased 49% after assisted suicide became legal.

Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano LETTER FROM MSGR. ART

Dear Brothers and Sisters, On December 8th we celebrate not only the beginning of the Holy Year of Mercy called by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, but also the 50th Anniversary of the close of the Second Vatican Council. The Council was without a doubt a watershed moment for reform and renewal of our Church in the last century. The Council that began in the Fall of 1962, consisted of four sessions, each taking place in the Fall of the following three years. Sixteen authoritative documents were promulgated by the Council with the concurrence of the Holy Father, touching virtually every aspect of our life as a Church. The style and tone of this Council was decidedly different from previous major Councils of the Church. This would not be a Council of condemnation or rebuking of error but rather a pastoral council, keen to enter into dialogue with the modern world enabling the perennial truth of the Gospel of Christ to ring with greater clarity to the men and women of this present age. During the final session of the Council, three significant documents would be issued that continue to have a profound impact on the life of our Church, particularly in our relationship with our non-Christian sisters and brothers (Nostra Aetate), Church/State relations and more specifically the question of Religious Liberty (Dignitatis Humanae) and finally, the Church’s relationship to the Modern World itself (Gaudium et Spes). The groundbreaking insights of this first document, Nostra Aetate, would radically change our Church’s relationship to non-Christians and specifically to our Jewish brothers and sisters. The history of the relationship between Catholics and Jews had been tendentious at best. While never a formal part of our teaching, many in the Church laid the sin of Deicide or “God killers” at the corporate feet of the Jewish people of Jesus time and their descendants. Such a charge insidiously fed the prejudice and mind set that led to the persecution of the Jewish people, their sequestration into ghettos and ultimately planted the demonic seeds of the Holocaust in Germany. The document Nostra Aetate would unequivocally affirm the fact that God did not rescind his special covenant with the Jewish people nor should the sin of Deicide be laid upon the whole race. In the words of the document itself: True, the Jewish authorities and those who followed their lead pressed for the death of Christ; still, what happened in His passion cannot be charged against all the Jews, without distinction, then alive, nor against the Jews of today. The Jews should not be presented as rejected or accursed by God, as if this followed from the Holy Scriptures. All should see to it, then, that in catechetical work or in the preaching of the word of God they do not teach anything that does not conform to the truth of the Gospel and the spirit of Christ. Furthermore, in her rejection of every persecution against any man, the Church, mindful of the patrimony she shares with the Jews and moved not by political reasons but by the Gospel's spiritual love, decries hatred, persecutions, displays of anti-Semitism, directed against Jews at any time and by anyone. (NA #4) Always forward, Msgr. Art

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: ¡FELIZ FIN DE AÑO¡ y ¡Viva Cristo Rey!

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Dn 1:1-6, 8-20; Dn 3:52-56; Lc 21:1-4 Martes: Dn 2:31-45; Dn 3:57-61; Lc 21:5-11 Miércoles: Dn 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28; Dn 3:62-67; Lc 21:12-19 Jueves: Dn 6:12-28; Dn 3:68-74; Lc 21:20-28 Día de Acción de Gracias (sugerencia): Sir 50:22-24; Sal 145 (144):2-11; 1 Cor 1:3-9; Lc 17:11-19 Viernes: Dn 7:2-14; Dn 3:75-81; Lc 21:29-33 Sábado: Dn 7:15-27; Dn 3:82-87; Lc 21:34-36 Domingo: Jer 33:14-16; Sal 25 (24):4-5, 8-10, 14; 1 Tes 3:12 — 4:2; Lc 21:25-28, 34-36

Siempre adelante, Mons. Art
