Procedure

Assessment

1. Give a brief overview of the activity and objectives. Explain that we’ll first model selecting a primary source as a whole group, then work hands-on in small groups to practice with a set of primary sources. 2. Distribute Considerations for Selecting Primary Sources Checklist. Allow time for participants to read silently. 3. Share the following imaginary classroom scenario:  7th Grade Social Studies  Unit on Women’s Rights  An essential question has been selected (e.g., How have the rights of women changed over time?)  A primary source – yet to be chosen – will be used to introduce the unit, spark interest, and inspire student inquiry.  It’s been decided that for this activity students do not need to have prior knowledge on the topic. 4. Display The Sky is Now Her Limit. and explain that we’re considering it for use in our imaginary scenario. 5. Using the Considerations for Selecting Primary Sources Checklist, model the selection process with participants to decide whether we would use this particular primary source in this 7th grade scenario. Discuss. (“Show of hands: how many of you would select this item for this scenario?” “Why? Why not?”) 6. Pair up by grade level. Explain that pairs will use the same scenario but at their own level, elementary, middle, or high – to practice selecting from a set of primary sources they are about to receive. 7. Distribute the sets of primary sources to each pair. Point out the item (bibliographic) information on the back. 8. Have each pair examine the set and select 1 or 2 items that they would use in their instructional settings, using sticky notes to explain why. 9. Form grade level groups. Have pairs report to grade level groups, explaining their decision-making process. Have each grade-level group share out one of their selections. 10. Ask: “What are some key things you’ll need to consider when selecting primary sources in your own educational settings?” Share with whole group. Record responses on whiteboard. Look for evidence of participants’ ability to identify key considerations for selecting primary sources.
