Metrotile Lightweight Roofing is the durable, elegant roofing solution that offers superior benefits to so-called ‘traditional’ roofing materials. Much of this stems from the low weight of each profile, which weighs up to just one seventh of traditional materials without compromising security or aesthetics. It’s no coincidence that Metrotile has been appearing on a rapidly-increasing number of conservatories in the UK and Ireland. From conservatory fabricators choosing The Future Proof Roof as the roofing material for their new build extensions, to self builders installing a new roof on to an existing conservatory, many are discovering the vast benefits of Metrotile Lightweight Steel Roofing. With home utility bills frequently increasing, people have been looking for ways to improve their insulation and keep energy costs to a minimum. However, with many conservatories the frames and foundations are simply not strong enough to accommodate a slate or clay roof, yet with a Metrotile roof the weight is of no concern as it can be installed without damaging the supporting structure and foundations. Furthermore, Velux roof windows and Sun Tunnels can be installed so losing the light you associate with your conservatory is no longer a worry. Traditionally, conservatories were considered a summertime space – a room to enjoy during the brighter months of the year - yet with a Metrotile roof, the conservatory becomes a space that can be enjoyed all year round. Every Metrotile roof profile is manufactured to the highest standards in our ISO14001 approved plant. Each Metrotile roof installation benefits from our 40 Year Weatherproof Guarantee. METROTILE’S FIRE RATING EXPLAINED

Safety regulations are focused on the importance of saving life, rather than saving property. Tests are based on how long each element of a structure will stand up to fire but have little to do with what happens once the fire has actually become established. In our area of specialism, fire safety tests are intended to show how well a roof can resist a fire from a source outside the building itself, firstly regarding the penetration of the roof, and secondly spreading across its surface. BS 476-3: 2004 - Fire test on building materials and structures - Part 3: Classification and methods of test for external fire exposure to roofs. Rating achieved: EXT.S.AA* *EXT means it is for external roofs. The S stands for sloped – the alternative you will come across is an F for flat. The two As are the ratings for resistance to fire penetration, first, and flame spread, second. For fire penetration, the A rating means the tested product has not been penetrated within one hour of testing under flame. The lowest rating, rating D, means the product was penetrated almost straight away, which the B and C ratings are given to those which fall either side of the 30 minute mark. For fire spread, rating A means that there was no spread of flame during testing for 60 minutes. B means a spread of 21 inches or less, C means more than 21 inches and D means the product carries on burning five minutes after the flame is removed, or that there is a 15 inch spread straight away. There is also an additional rating, which is the addition of a letter X (for example EXT.S.BCX), which denotes the presence of any flaming droplets from the edge of the product, mechanical failure or any development of holes under testing. The other issue to consider is distance from boundaries with regards to building regulations. Anything with Broof (t4) or an AA, AB or AC rating can be safely constructed six metres or less from a property boundary. NB: As to European standards, there is ENV 1187 which is the basis for standards which are intended to eventually replace BS 476-3: 2004. As yet, ENV 1187 has yet to be granted full European Standard status but when an amended version of it is sent through, it is likely to take over our national standards. At Metrotile, our products are tested against these standards as well. We like to excel where we can. The classification is known as BS EN 13501-5 and runs from B at the top end to F at the bottom, followed by “roof (t4)”, with t4 showing that a two-stage test method has been used, incorporating burning brands, wind and supplementary radiant heat. UK or EU – the measurements are the same. So when the standards are met to the highest classification, you can be sure that a roof will not be penetrated by external fire in an hour, it will carry on burning for less than five minutes and that flame spread will be minimal

Just some of the benefits: • • • • • • • • •

Insulation can be significantly improved, reducing home energy bills Traditional roof benefits without the strain on structure and foundations Highly secure against vandalism and extreme weather Metrotile has achieved the highest external fire resistance rating Velux windows and ventilation systems easily incorporated Low weight ensures rapid installation 40 Year Weatherproof Guarantee Highly experienced customer support Stunning aesthetics

As a Metrotile roof weighs up to one seventh of so-called ‘traditional’ roofing materials, a uPVC frame conservatory is now able to have a full roof installed upon it. A Metrotile roof means that all accessories associated with a full rooftop installation can now be fitted, from rafters to VPU, to a full insulative layer, to Velux windows for natural light. There’s even a plethora lighting options that can be installed into the conservatory ceiling. Improved insulation means you don’t lose the space of your conservatory to the cold, damp winter months. With a Metrotile roof, keeping the sliding doors sealed shut through the winter is a thing of the past. The improvement to insulation should not be overlooked. It’s no secret that UK energy prices have been increasing annually, squeezing UK residents more money in exchange for less energy. By improving the insulation of your conservatory, you can keep your home warm at less expense while ensuring less of the money spent on energy is wasted.

APPROVED SYSTEMS The Local Authority Building Control (LABC) is a non-profit organisation that helps to ensure UK homes are of a habitable standard. They have produced their own guidance on the installation of a Conservatory Solid Roof entitled LABC’s Guidance on Solid Roofs to Conservatories or Porches Attached to Dwellings. Visit their website www.labc.co.uk for more information. Their guidance is also downloadable at metrotile.co.uk/ conservatories.

CASE STUDIES

Northampton-based building specialists Linden Heritage specialise in the external and internal renovation of Period and Listed buildings, just part of a wide-reaching portfolio that includes feature both New Build and Refurbishment projects. As period properties can be a stringently traditional arena when it comes to the choice of building materials used (due to strict planning requirements), it may come as a surprise to note that Linden Heritage are proud users of Metrotile Lightweight Roofing Systems – a material that prides itself on being an evolution of the very ‘traditional’ materials required by listed buildings.

“Due to the nature of our renovations, planning requirements and our customers need for their homes to retain their classic appearance, we’re not able to use Metrotile on the main rooftops of any Period homes we renovate” Tim Alanthwaite, Company Director.

“However, we find ourselves involved with the building and renovation of external buildings at these sites, including conservatories and equestrian projects. We have much more freedom when it comes to specifying the roofing material for these buildings”. As a result, Linden Heritage apply Metrotile Lightweight Roofing to Conservatories and other external buildings, such as additional accommodation and visitor rooms or converted stables. This was the case for Linden Heritage’s work at a period home in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire that has a special place in Mr Alanthwaite’s heart:

“I believe that Metrotile is a fantastic product, so I had no concerns specifying it for my own home”. It became very apparent the Mr Alanthwaite is truly proud of his business and after taking a tour of the recent renovation work at his own listed property, it’s very easy to understand why. During the visit I get to observe Linden Heritage’s roofing work on each of the external buildings, a converted outer building and stunning internal works to the kitchen and conservatory. Mr Alanthwaite’s satisfaction with Metrotile is reflected in the use of Metrotile Slate on all external buildings, including an annex building and the aforementioned stunning conservatory – quite the endorsement for the Future Proof Roof.

“Whenever we are involved with a conservatory our outer building project, we insist on using Metrotile for the roofing” continues Mr Alanthwaite. “The rapid installation, security, soundproofing and aesthetics set the product head and shoulders above the competition”.

Mr and Mrs Palmer of Buckinghamshire had decided their large, twenty five year old conservatory was in need of a refresh. Sporting a traditional glass roof, the conservatory was a space utilised well during the summer, but not during the cooler winter months. With eight young grandchildren visiting on a regular basis, the idea of utilising the space throughout the entire year became a welcome proposition. With this in mind, Mr Palmer used the internet to search for a replacement roof material, deciding that a glass roof would be innappropriate for the insulation required to keep the room warm during the winter. After running an online search for ‘lightweight roofing’, Mr Palmer discovered Metrotile:

“Metrotile ticked the boxes for each of our requirements, including the key factors of a lightweight, low pitch design and the aesthetics to blend in with our existing cladding and roofing. The light weight was ideal considering the extra materials we had to install on the conservatory roof”. Approved Metrotile Contractors AP Roofing were called in for the installation. Peter Evans, one half of the partnership that runs AP Roofing, recalled the challenges presented by the project:

“Every conservatory is different, so every conservatory presents us with a different challenge. In this case, our biggest hurdle was a window located close to the conservatory roof. As such, we had to install 50mm of the roof below the rafters and 50mm above, utilsing an industry-leading 3 1/4 ply insulation board, a VPU and the Metrotile Shingle profile over that.” The 50/50 split above and below the rafters ensured enough space was available for ventilation. This also helped to achieve the 15 degree pitch, while giving significant clearance from the window above. The final results are stunning and ensure that Mr & Mrs Palmer can enjoy the conservatory all year round with their family.

“Whenever we refurbish a conservatory in this manner, we always get a great response from customers. They always tell us how pleased they are, that they can use the conservatory all year, because it’s warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The reduction in utility bills is also a popular outcome”. Mr Palmer is no exception, with his views reflecting with all of Peter’s points. As we stand in his newly refurbished conservatory during a heavy rain shower, Mr Palmer adds:

“I was really surprised about the low noise. It’s raining right now and the noise level is no different than the roof materials used on the main house”.
