Images of Africa Co-ordinates are made up of two measurements: • Degrees north or south of the equator • Degrees east or west of Greenwich Meridian

If you take a map of the world and then draw in the equator and Greenwich Meridian, you divide the Earth into four sections or hemispheres: 1. ____________________ and ______________________ 2. ____________________ and ______________________ 3. ____________________ and ______________________ 4. ____________________ and ______________________ Any place on Earth can be described in terms of two hemispheres, for example, Cape Town is located in the southern and eastern hemisphere, and the co-ordinates give the precise location within these hemispheres.

If you looking for Cape Town on the map, an index might lead you to a map reference of block B11 or B12. You would know that Cape Town was somewhere within these blocks. Co-ordinates work slightly differently, as they show you a precise position or point. Cape Town’s co-ordinates are 34°S (South of equator) 18 ½ °E (east of Greenwich Meridian). You would find Cape Town at the exact point at which the two lines cross. CONQUERING CO-ORDINATES Read the information below. Work out the co-ordinates for the physical features labelled on the map. 400

The Drakensberg mountains are found in the eastern part of South Africa and run through Lesotho. The range is 965 kilometres long and the highest point is Thabana Ntlenyana in Lesotho (3 483 metres). 8. Table Mountain is found in Cape Town, South Africa.
