Name:
Images of Africa Co-ordinates are made up of two measurements: • Degrees north or south of the equator • Degrees east or west of Greenwich Meridian
If you take a map of the world and then draw in the equator and Greenwich Meridian, you divide the Earth into four sections or hemispheres: 1. ____________________ and ______________________ 2. ____________________ and ______________________ 3. ____________________ and ______________________ 4. ____________________ and ______________________ Any place on Earth can be described in terms of two hemispheres, for example, Cape Town is located in the southern and eastern hemisphere, and the co-ordinates give the precise location within these hemispheres.

If you looking for Cape Town on the map, an index might lead you to a map reference of block B11 or B12. You would know that Cape Town was somewhere within these blocks. Co-ordinates work slightly differently, as they show you a precise position or point. Cape Town’s co-ordinates are 34°S (South of equator) 18 ½ °E (east of Greenwich Meridian). You would find Cape Town at the exact point at which the two lines cross. CONQUERING CO-ORDINATES Read the information below.
