Dear Cardinal Parents / Guardians: I hope that you and your family had an opportunity to spend quality time together over the recent Spring Break and holiday weekend! We are certainly excited to enter the final stretch of this school year and the spring season with renewed energy and enthusiasm. During this time of year, there are multiple opportunities for us to gather information from students, parents, staff, and community members through various events, surveys, forums, and assessments, so we can continue to meet the needs of our learning community. It was great to see so many of you at our parent teacher conferences! We always love the opportunity to share your child’s growth with you at this valuable event. Thank you for making time to meet with your child’s teachers! It was also nice to see so many of you at the Grading for Learning forum on Monday, April 4, where parents were able to learn about the amazing work our staff has done surrounding best assessment practices in education and to get a sneak peek at the standard-based report card we will be utilizing next year to communicate to you and your child about academic and lifelong learner characteristic progress. If you missed this event, no worries, a repeat session will take place at our Back-to-School Night at the start of the 2016/17 school year. Your child had the opportunity to take the district student engagement survey in March. The information gathered from this survey, provides valuable student perception data that helps us establish goals and action plans over the course of a school-year. This year for instance, based on student feedback, we focused our JAR activities in Teacher Advisory on respectful relationships and planned more school-wide celebrations, per our students’ request. The annual Parent Satisfaction Survey will be conducted this spring as well. Please be sure to share your voice with us through the survey when you receive the link. Your valuable input allows us to better serve your needs. Based on last years’ survey, efforts have been made to improve our communication to you about your child’s progress at school. Our students in grades 6-8 will be participating in the Wisconsin Forward state assessment during the spring testing window that occurs in April and May. Our school is scheduled to take the Wisconsin Forward assessment during that time and we will test our students by grade level teams. An Infinite Campus messenger will be sent with the specific dates and times that your child will be testing with their Teacher Advisory class as we move closer to the testing window. The Wisconsin Forward assessment tests students in the areas of th English-Language Arts and mathematics in grades 6-8 and our 8 grade students will be assessed in the areas of social studies and science as well. One or more subtests may be administered daily

during the identified time-frame and it is very important that your son or daughter be in school during this time. Students not in school on the scheduled testing days will be scheduled to make-up the tests at the end of the month. The Wisconsin Forward assessment measures the knowledge and skills your student(s) should have acquired by the time they reach each grade level. Please encourage your son or daughter to take the test seriously and to do the best they can. The results of these tests will help school staff make determinations or placement in classes to best support your student. We will conduct our third and final needs-based assessment the first two weeks in May. Your child will take the Scholastic Reading Inventory as the AIMS Web math and reading assessments. The results from these assessments will help us to chart growth of each of our students and allows us to make appropriate academic program decisions for your child. Finally, your child will have the opportunity to take part in the Wisconsin Youth Risk Behavior Survey the first week in May. This survey has been developed so youth can tell us what they do that may affect their overall health and well-being. The information they provide will be used to develop better health education and programming for students in the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District and community. Please look for more information about this survey in the next few weeks. As we build our strategic continuous improvement plans around all of the information gathered from these sources, please be assured that we will celebrate our successes as a learning community with our students and families prior to the end of the school year! “We all need people who will give us feedback. Jaylyn “Inéz” Blaeser is Señora Arendt’s selection for the March Spanish Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Inéz enters the class every day with a comment or question in Spanish! She is willing to take on any task and encourages others in class to participate. She raises her hand for almost every question and makes the class environment and conversations more exciting and insightful. Inéz has a passion for expanding her vocabulary and seeks out opportunities to use it during and outside of class. Inéz is a natural leader who is able to motivate others! ¡Eres fenomenal, Inéz! Anthony “Antonio” Plechacek is Señora Arendt’s selection for the March Spanish Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Antonio brings so much energy and excitement to the class each day with his positive attitude. He challenges himself each day to incorporate more target language into his conversations. One of Antonio’s strongest characteristics is his way of bringing a different perspective to our class conversations. Antonio will be attending Concordia Language Villages in April and there is no doubt that he will be one of the strongest participants and representatives of CFMS.¡Buen trabajo, Antonio!

Kailee “Sofía” Lien is Señorita Wolner’s selection for the March Spanish Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Sofía does excellent work in class! She is very skilled in writing and reading in the Spanish language. Sofía is a leader in her participation, positive attitude and collaboration with others. She demonstrates her passion for learning each day. Sofía pays close attention in class and enjoys catching Señorita Wolner when she says the word of the week. ¡Maravilloso, Sofía!

Creative Engaged & Outstanding Congratulations to the following students who earned the title of CEO by the unified arts department for their outstanding effort in the classroom this past month.

Ty “Juan” Wiberg is Señorita Wolner’s selection for the March Spanish Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Juan regularly shows his interest in learning Spanish and does so with a smile. He offers his ideas and works well with others. Juan shows leadership when he brings a determined and willing attitude to class each day. He demonstrates responsibility in visiting Señorita Wolner to catch up on work quickly. Juan truly makes Spanish class a better place! ¡Sensacional, Juan!

Kyjuan Gospodinoff has been selected as the outstanding agriculture student for March. Kyjuan used his prior knowledge to ask further questions in class! He specifically asked about the animal by-product bone meal. When students ask questions that have sparked from class topics, the learning is extended for all students. Great job Kyjuan and keep asking questions!  Ms. James

Adriana “Angèle” Stephenson is Mademoiselle Hemauer’s selection for the March French Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Angèle is a very proactive student in class. She shows up to class early to ask questions, participates often during class activities and shows leadership qualities by working well with others. In addition to learning in class, she is very motivated to learn more about the language and culture outside of class. In April, Angèle will be participating in the Concordia Languages Villages with her classmates where she will spend an entire weekend immersed in the French language. Formidable, Angèle !

The Art Department would like to recognize both Josie Harvey and Alaina Steinmetz.These two young ladies don't waste any time developing ideas once a new project is presented. They also have strong collaborative spirits; giving feedback and helping peers comes natural to these two. Both girls invest extra time on their projects so their personal expectations for craftsmanship can be met. The artworks created by Josie and Alaina stand out, we are proud to have you as CFMS artists. Congratulations ladies!

Jaykob “Jacques” Hamman is Mademoiselle Hemauer’s selection for the March French Student of the Month in the World Language Department. Jacques is extremely dedicated to learning the French language, which is obvious by his high level of participation in class and his work ethic during class activities. He goes above and beyond to show his passion for the language and culture by bringing French realia to class that he finds at different shops around town. Jacques’ positive attitude and sense of humor make class fun and exciting for his peers and teacher. Incroyable, Jacques !

This month's Business Education CEO goes to Evan Dennis for his classroom leadership in Mr. Burger's 7th grade Business Class. His participation in class discussions not only aid in review of material, but he helps make the connection of content to real-world examples. By doing so, he enables his peers to further their understanding of the content. He goes above and beyond when completing assignments and is always willing to help out his fellow classmates. The CFMS music department hosted its annual solo and ensemble festival on Saturday, March 12. 7th grade choir and orchestra students as well as 8th grade band, choir and orchestra students had the opportunity to prepare and perform solos and small ensembles for certified judges. Following each performance, the judges were able to give the students advice for continued improvement on their musical skills. All of the students did a great job and we are very proud of 6

Sixth Grade Girls Intramural Volleyball started on Tuesday, March 29 and will last until Thursday, May 5. 7/8 Grade Girls Soccer and 7/8 Grade Boys and Girls Track will tentatively start on Monday, April 11, weather permitting. Practices are on Mon-Tue-Thurs and Fri. Girls Soccer practice is from 4:00–5:30pm on the upper north football field, and Boys/Girls Track practice is from 4:00– 5:00pm and they meet out by the bike racks. Students and parents will NOT be getting a schedule of game or meets until Monday, April 11. Sign-ups for Fall Sports (7/8 Football, 7/8 Boys Soccer, 7/8 Girls Volleyball, 6/7/8 Boys & Girls Cross Country and 6/7/8 Cheer/Stunt/Dance) will be held outside of the Men's PE Office May 23–27. Students becoming 7th graders will need to have a physical completed before they are able to practice. There will be a Fall Sports Meeting and Concussion Testing on Tuesday, August 9 and Wednesday, August 10 during the evening of the walk-through-days. Fuel Up your Child’s Game Providing snacks that fuel up young athletes is a chance to teach them about the proper way to get energy for sports, while showing them how much you care. Snacks serve several purposes for active kids, including:  Provide energy to help working muscles power through activity  Supply fluids for hydration and keeping the body cool  Providing nutrients for growth and development  Promoting recovery after exercise There are different snacks to meet different needs. You can use this guide to help choose the best snacks for game day. After School Games: A good after school snack provides quality carbohydrates and protein for quick energy and a satisfied stomach. Consider offering your children some of these nourishing options:  Fruited yogurt cups or tubes  Peanut butter sandwich with fruit jam  Turkey and/or cheese wraps cut into 1-inch slices for easy finger food  String cheese and mini pretzels  Bottles of cold water or pitchers of cold water with lemon Weekend Morning Games: Muscle fuel can be low after fasting overnight. The Weekend Kid’s Meals Program offered through Feed My People Food Bank provides food for your child during the weekend. There are no income guidelines or requirements. Anyone is welcome to participate in this program. The food is at NO COST to you or your child. Students pick up a plastic bag of food outside the main office every Friday before they leave school at the end of the day. There’s enough food for breakfast and lunch for him/her for Saturday and Sunday, plus snacks and fresh fruit. The meals have not been screened for different allergies; therefore, parents are responsible for determining if this program meets your child’s dietary and health needs. Educational Excellence

Eighth Grade social studies students are currently working on an American Indian project. This project includes history, culture, tribal sovereignty, and the current status of American Indian tribes of the United States. Students are researching, using relevant and reliable sources and will organize their information in a clear format with visuals to aid comprehension. Standards addressed with the American Indian project include Hist-B.8.11, WHST 7, and WHST 2B. Upcoming units will include Texas Independence and the War with Mexico. Seventh Grade social studies classes have just finished a unit on Germany and the Alpine Countries with a summative on reading maps and interpreting graphs. Our next unit is on France with a summative dealing with why people revolt. Upcoming units will include Eastern Europe, Russia and Northern Europe. Latin America, our current focus of study in 6th grade, stretches from Mexico in North America to the

southernmost tip of South America. The region has a great variety of physical and cultural contrasts. Steamy tropical forests, thundering waterfalls, cold mountain peaks, and peaceful island beaches make up the physical features of Latin America. The people who live there have a diverse heritage, including European, African, and Indian backgrounds. Although Spanish is common in many of the countries, others such as Portuguese, French, Dutch, English, and over 80 Indian languages are spoken. Most of the people live along or near the coastlines of the continent, and large urban areas such as Buenos Aires are major centers of commerce. Natural resources, such as rain forest vegetation and oil, are important to the region’s economies. As we progress through our unit, we will be examining Latin America’s physical environment, history, and cultural characteristics.

6th Grade: Sixth graders have just completed the Ratios and Rates (6.RP.3b & 3c) unit. Our next unit will be Integers. Students will understand positive and negative numbers and learn how to represent them on a number line and coordinate plane. Students will also learn about opposites and absolute value (6.NS.8). The unit that follows will get us back into algebra and solving single step equations. 7th Grade: Seventh grade students just completed their scaledrawing unit where they enlarged WWII flags, candy bar wrappers, and shrunk a classroom. Next, they will solve a wide variety of percent problems, including those involving discounts, simple interest, taxes, tips, and percent increase or decrease. Please help your child do percent problems when you are out shopping, giving a tip at a restaurant, and finding sales tax on items. The last units in 7th grade math will focus on Geometry and Probability and Statistics. th

8 Grade: In Pre-Algebra, students are studying Scientific Notation. They are learning how to simplify expressions with exponents, which directly leads into simplifying expressions that are in scientific notation. Students will

be using the basic operations (add/subtract/multiply/divide) to simplify an expression. Expect your student to be taking their Scientific Notation Summative Assessment the week of April 18. Please note that each team will be testing on a different date due to the Wisconsin Forward Exam. For the rest of April, we will be studying the Pythagorean Theorem. In this unit, students will learn how to convert repeating decimals to a fraction, solve square/cube roots, and find the missing side of a right triangle. A tentative time- frame for the Pythagorean Theorem Summative Assessment is the second week in May. Again, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your student's Pre-Algebra teacher. Algebra: The last couple of months of 8th grade Algebra will consist of the study of quadratic equations, quadratic functions, and rational functions. This content is perhaps the most cognitively challenging of the year, so it is very important for students to stay focused and to maintain good study habits. As always, if students are in need of additional help, please don't hesitate to ask! As students look forward to next year at Chi-Hi, please remember that our hope for 8th grade Algebra students is for them to reach Calculus as a senior and hopefully consider a post-secondary and career choice in a STEM field. Parent Corner From the desk of the School Resource Officer Mark Johnson

Well…with the arrival of spring and hopefully better weather and road conditions, many students will be bringing bicycles to school. Parents, please remind your children to ride safely, wear a helmet, to park their bicycles in the racks that are provided at the school and to lock up their bicycles, so that they are not stolen. The Chippewa Falls Police Department requires that all bicycles owned by Chippewa Falls residents, to have a city of Chippewa Falls Bicycle Registration sticker. This sticker can be purchased for the lifetime of the bicycle for $1.00. This sticker allows police officers to determine the owner of the bicycle when found. In addition, the serial number is logged and even if the sticker is removed or unreadable, officers can still determine the owner through the serial number. This small non-expiring $1.00 fee can be very valuable insurance to have if your bicycle is ever lost or stolen. You do not need to bring your bicycle to the police department to purchase the license. Simply bring the make, model, height, color and serial number of the bicycle(s), along with $1.00 for each bicycle, to the Chippewa Falls Police Department weekdays from 7:30am to 4:30pm.

Poison Prevention Week was March 20-26. In 2013, Poison Control Centers managed 3.1 million calls…that averages out to almost 8,400 per day! The majority of poisonings occurring in the home are accidental. Among children, these things often cause poisonings:  Medicines  Painkillers  Household cleaners  Hydrocarbons (such as lamp oil, kerosene, gasoline, lighter fluid)  Plants Most poisonings occur when parents or caregivers are home, but not paying attention. Be especially careful when there is a change in routine. Holidays, visits to and from relatives and other special events put children at greater risk. Ways to Prevent Accidental Poisoning:  Store medicine, cleaners, paints/varnishes and pesticides in their original packaging in locked cabinets or containers, out of sight and reach of children  Install a safety latch-that locks when you close the door on child-accessible cabinets containing harmful products  Purchase and keep all medicines in containers with safety caps. Discard unused medication  Check the label each time you give a child medicine to ensure proper dosage  Never tell a child that medicine tastes like candy  Never place poisonous products in food or drink containers  Keep coal, wood, or kerosene stoves in safe working order  Maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors Treatment: If your child is unconscious, not breathing or having seizures due to poison contact or ingestion, call 911. If your child has come in contact with poison, and has mild or no symptoms, call your poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

Immediate Treatment Tips Swallowed Poison: Remove item from the child and have child spit out any remaining substance. Do not make your child vomit! Skin Poison: Remove the child’s clothes and rinse the skin with lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes Eye Poison: Flush the child’s eye by holding the eyelid open and pouring a steady stream of room temperature water into the inner corner. Poisonous Fumes: Take the child outside or into fresh air immediately. If child has stopped breathing, start CPR and do not stop until the child breathes or help arrives.

ILLNESS/ABSENCES: Please call the attendance line specific to your student in the morning if your child is to be absent and state why he/she will not be attending. Please be as specific as you can, as often there are several “flu” viruses around at the same time. If your child has been ill, he/she should be free of a temperature over 100.8 degrees, without the use of acetaminophen or ibuprofen, for 24 hours before returning to school. If your child is diagnosed with any of the following communicable diseases please notify the school as soon as possible: strep throat, chicken pox, impetigo, scabies, head lice, pink eye, vomit/diarrhea illness and Fifth’s Disease. The exclusion time for each is:       

PHY-ED RESTRICTIONS: If a student's physical activity at school will be limited by injury or illness, a doctor’s note is required. Students are expected to participate fully in PE activities unless there is an exemption note.  A medical problem limiting activity for more than one class cycle (5 days) will require a doctor's note. The doctor should indicate the diagnosis and the length of time that physical activity is restricted.  If the physician requires that the student be reevaluated before returning to PE, the physician will need to issue another note stating that the student has been cleared to participate.  A student with an obvious medical problem (i.e cast or splint) will be required to have a note for PE limitations. ATTENTION PARENTS OF SOON TO BE 6th GRADERS: The Wisconsin Student Immunization law requires a Tdap, the adolescent combination vaccine that protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) and a 2nd Varicella vaccination within 30 days from the start of the 6th grade school year. Please get these shots updated during the summer and turn in your shot record to Health Services Office at the Middle School. Please remind your student to check the Lost and Found in the laundry room down in the phy-ed area AND the front office. That lost item you or your student has been looking for may be there!

After logging into your portal account, click onto the tab at the top: “Switch Students”. In doing so, you will see a dropdown of all students for whom you are guardian. By selecting their name, you will get a new screen showing the index of information available to you. What, exactly, is available is based on the grade level of your student:  The Schedule will give you a grid of your student’s classes

If you wish to view specific assignments, the dates they are due, or points earned on an assignment, go to “Schedule” – then click onto the class name. Scroll down to the grids. The grids are set up in the order of oldest first – you may have to scroll down to locate the most current.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS WHO HAVE NOT YET CREATED A PARENT PORTAL If you have not yet created a parent portal account, feel free to call or email your child’s school and request information. We will email you instructions and a 32-character code required to activate your account. You will then select a personal username and password. Your parent portal may be accessed through our website at http://cfsd.chipfalls.k12.wi.us and clicking on the Infinite Campus logo at the top of the screen. Clicking onto Infinite Campus Portal will open the login screen for you. If you have further questions, feel free to call the school district’s help desk at 715.726.2413.

MOBILE DEVICE PORTAL SETUP Campus Mobile Portal will give you real time information on your son or daughter enrolled in the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District. Breakfast and Lunch Menus for all schools are posted monthly at http://cfsd.chipfalls.k12.wi.us//foodServices.cfm Breakfast is available at all schools. Elementary is $0.35/day, Middle School is $0.85 and High School is $1.00. Additional items can be purchased at the Middle School and High School and each item will be charged individually. Lunch - Elementary $2.10 - MS and HS $2.35 - Milk is available for purchase at any school for $0.35 for all students. If you send a lunch from home, you may want to consider sending a beverage if you do not want to incur a milk charge on your account. - Additional items can be purchased individually at the MS and HS. Students on free or reduced price meals will also be charged for items purchased in addition to the meal.

Limiting Meal Purchases/Expense: At the middle and high school levels, students are allowed to purchase additional items along with their traditional lunch and breakfast meal. Restrictions can be placed on an individual student’s account to prohibit excessive a la carte purchases. It does not mean the student cannot have it, but rather they must provide cash at the time of purchase. Additionally, a dollar limit can be set per student. Free and Reduced Price School Meals: All students on free or reduced meals are entitled to one breakfast and one lunch per day. Milk only or extra items are charged at full price. Meal applications are accepted anytime throughout the school year. You may complete an online application on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Paper applications are also available at any school office and at the Administration Office. All meal account inquiries/questions can be directed to 715.726.2581. Be sure to access our Daily Announcements online to get the latest information about what’s happening in our building. On the middle school website, click on the “About Our School” tab and select “Daily Announcements”. Parents/guardians are required to notify school when their student will be absent by calling the attendance line and leaving a detailed message. The attendance line is also where you would leave messages when the student needs to be released during the school day or is coming in late due to an appointment. Please clearly state the name of the student, the time to be released or the return time if applicable and the reason they will be gone. Students can pick up their passes to leave from the respective grade level office or they will be delivered to the student.

Your child’s safety is of utmost importance to us. Parents needing alternative drop off locations for their child in the afternoon or if the child is riding home with a friend, a bus deviation must be completed and turned into the office. Bus Deviation forms are available in the school office.
