A Mission of Caring Our Mission Connecticut Children’s Medical Center is dedicated to improving the physical and emotional health of children through family-centered care, research, education and advocacy. We embrace discovery, teamwork, integrity and excellence in all that we do. As the only independent freestanding children’s hospital between Boston and Philadelphia, we know that caring for children is completely different than caring for adults. No one in the region has a better understanding of a child’s needs and the care options available for them and their families than we do. Because we are all about caring for kids all of the time, we are able to attract the most talented pediatricians and pediatric sub-specialists to Connecticut Children’s. This high level of professionalism and specialization ensures our patients and families receive the highest-quality pediatric care possible. There are four key ways we fulfill our mission today and will increase our capacity and impact the future. Clinical Care Connecticut Children’s was created in 1996 to ensure that the region’s children can access a full range of high-quality care in an environment designed especially for them. Even as we grew to accommodate nearly twice as many patient visits last year compared to our first year, we have remained committed to that goal. As we grow in the years ahead, we will continue our commitment to helping as many children as possible, as close to home as possible. The children and families for whom we care are at the center of everything we do. We partner with parents in all aspects of care because nobody knows their children as well as they do. This partnership ensures children receive outstanding care that is responsive to their emotional and physical needs, while respectful of each family’s traditions and values.

Advocacy Promoting children’s health goes beyond providing medical and surgical services. It also includes preventing illness and injury, helping children reach their full developmental and educational potential, and working to build healthy families in healthy communities. We work with schools, community leaders, government agencies, parents, service providers, business leaders and legislators to ensure children and families throughout Connecticut are healthier, safer and better-informed about issues that affect the quality of their lives every day. From stronger booster seat requirements for toddlers to better driver education and safer learning conditions for older children, we have worked with our partners to keep all kids safer. We remain committed to working with broad coalitions to address issues that impact children’s health, from asthma to obesity to healthy child development and school readiness.

Partners for Connecticut’s Families Research Our commitment to our patients’ health does not stop at the bedside. Our physician scientists conduct important research into many pediatric diseases and disorders. In addition, they explore how diseases that affect people of all ages, from cancer to diabetes, impact kids. Our talented doctors conduct research across a broad spectrum. They understand that research will lead to innovations in treatments and cures for kids for whom they care and around the globe. That is why they work to discover how digestive diseases impact bone health, ways to prevent sports injuries, how to help the earliest premature babies’ respiratory systems develop, and how to manage children’s pain most effectively. Connecticut Children’s has a vibrant clinical trials program, which allows our physicians to offer cutting-edge

therapies that are not yet available at many hospitals. We have active trials in nearly all practice areas of the Medical Center, with a particular strength in our cancer clinical trials program. Education As the home of the UConn School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics and Division of Pediatric Surgery, the Medical Center teaches the state’s next generation of pediatricians. Our residency program offers one of two programs in the state for specialists to work with children. Doctors in every specialty, from cardiology to urology, train with us to learn how to address the special needs of children. Connecticut Children’s also offers a comprehensive array of education programs for practicing physicians, school nurses, allied health workers and other medical professionals in the community to remain current with developments in their disciplines.
