The Maria Dolores Ferré It has been nine years since Roberto Espejo, Senior Associate with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, and the senior site representative for the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, led a studio with Derrick Smith of A+S Architects, and University of Miami School of Architecture students in the exploration of a new performing arts building for Carrollton. A number of conceptual proposals addressed everything from current conditions to alternative realities. All had in common unparalleled enthusiasm for the challenge of designing a

facility that would serve as a worship space, performing arts center, teaching facility and community gathering space, within the confines of a limited area, historical site restrictions and fiscally responsible budget constraints. Almost a decade later we are on the verge of seeing the reality of that enthusiasm. A number of committed supporters, dedicated volunteers and fearless leaders have maintained the importance of this project on the list of our priorities.

Convocation Center Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ believed that what stands by us in life is... discipline of mind, habits acquired, the power of steady application, and such knowledge of first principles as will enable new knowledge and experience of any kind to find its right place and true proportion in what has been already acquired*. Such an education is achieved not just in the classroom, or with books, or with the myriad of educational tools available. The development and nourishment of the spiritual life, the lifeline of the community, the revelation of creative expression, the

appreciation of beauty which can open the soul to mystery, the exposure to divergent thoughts and groundbreaking research in the presentations of authors and lecturers, all form the basis of Sacred Heart’s vigorous education. The Convocation Center will serve all the members of the Carrollton community. It will be the venue to showcase dreams, promote dialogue, soothe hearts, praise God, engender self-discovery and give an audible voice to the educational mission we hold dear — a place current and future students, faculty, friends and staff can call home.

This never before published article was written by Sr. Margaret Seitz, RSCJ prior to her final struggle with cancer. It eloquently expresses her values as an educator and her conviction that Sacred Heart educators must be exceptional and supported in their continuous development.

Professional Development:

Meeting the Demands of an Intellectual Life By: Margaret Seitz, RSCJ, Assistant Head for Curriculum Development

F

or more than 200 years, the Society of the Sacred Heart has been educating young women, and more recently, young men. The strength of Sacred Heart education continues to lie in the charism and vision of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat. From the very start, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat focused on the formation of the child or student for her entire life…not simply the next stage of her educational path. This education for life intended to give each Child of the Sacred Heart the attitudes, skills and essential knowledge to navigate the future. The most important gift was, in St. Madeleine Sophie’s mind, the gift of an informed, lively faith. Sacred Heart graduates are called to live in the heart of God. To provide such a foundation is the audacious charge of all Sacred Heart educators. From the start St. Madeleine Sophie provided the educators with pedagogy which she first outlined in the Plan of Studies (1815). Well into the 20th century, every six years an international meeting has taken place to ensure that the spirit of the Plan of Studies remains secure. In time, the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart education emerged. First articulated in 1975, today’s version was written by all the Sacred Heart educators in the USA

in 2005. What has remained consistent over the centuries is St. Madeleine Sophie’s insistence on intellectual liveliness. The Goals and Criteria provide the framework in which young women become intellectually competent. Two essential ingredients to this vision of education are the professional development of the faculty and staff and the focus on critical thinking in developing the curriculum. Why emphasize the on-going professional development of the faculty? The demands of the intellectual life are stringent. For more than 200 years, Sacred Heart educators have been expected to demonstrate… n

Depth of knowledge of the subject being taught;

Broad cultural background; Critical judgment which can distinguish the essential from the extraneous; Intuitive as well as an academic knowledge of child psychology; Grasp of effective teaching methods.

These characteristics are developed through study and practice. Professional development opportunities for faculty include day and week-long seminars provided by nationally recognized experts who come to Carrollton, as well as, national conferences sponsored by such organizations as the National Association of Independent Schools, the National Coalition of Girls Schools, the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, the Association of International Baccalaureate Schools, the National Catholic Educational Association, the Florida Council of Independent Schools, the Florida Kindergarten Council, the Association for Curriculum Design and the national associations/councils of each discipline, i.e. National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). These are our member organizations. We also send faculty to national conferences sponsored by such organizations as The Council on Gifted and Talented Students. Carrollton’s 10th Anniversary as an IB School By Lilian Solis-Silva ‘92

This year marks Carrollton’s 10th Anniversary as an International Baccalaureate World School and we have much to celebrate. In the fall of 2005, when Carrollton first offered the IB Program, there were twelve IB courses, 33% of the Class of 2007 participated and 95% earned their diploma. Now, we have doubled the number of courses, 100% of the Class of 2015 participated in IB coursework, 92% enrolled in a full Diploma Program and 98% earned their diploma compared to the 80% worldwide average. The compelling range of courses on offer has contributed to the increased interest in and access to the program. Our faculty are now leaders on an international stage — they are assessing work from around the world as IB Educators and presenting at national and international conferences. Our students continue to matriculate and find success at top ranked national and international colleges and universities, many continuing onto post-graduate studies. Sacred Heart and IB educators share the same aim, to educate the whole person. St. Madeleine Sophie believed that, “Education must be concerned not only with the studies but also with whatever may be required for the right ordering of life and the requirements of cultivated society.” We see this echoed in the 1953 Spirit of the Plan of Studies¸ “Whatever (the orientation given to studies) may be, there must be no forgetting that it means the formation of the whole woman with a view to her own vocation in the circumstances and the age in which she lives.” According to IB educator, John Hare, holistic education such as the IB Programme is:

…a clear departure from the knowledge transmission approach to education that has been familiar in the past. Holistic education prepares a student for lifelong learning in which the educational focus moves towards the life skills, attitudes and personal awareness that the student will need in an increasingly complex world. The commitment to the subject knowledge of the student is maintained but is complemented by learning how to learn, the critical evaluation of knowledge gained and the use of this knowledge in a broad range of contexts; it is these that represent the education currency of the future.1 Carrollton has chosen to partner with the IB organization because, in essence both programs of study strive to educate active, compassionate, life-long learners who understand their roles and responsibilities in an interdependent world. With an emphasis on the development of non-cognitive skills such as time-management and self-regulation, in conjunction with excellent academic skills as a foundation, the relationship has flourished. The essence of Sacred Heart education is articulated in the five Goals and Criteria and the IB translates its mission into a set of learning outcomes known as the IB Learner Profile. The Goals & Criteria and the IB Learner Profile complement each other and when considered together, the portrait of a 21st Century learner emerges as inquirers, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective students. 1.
