CHARLES BENNETT, GRAND ECHANSON DES ETATS-UNIS NATIONAL ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE CHAÎNE HOUSE AT FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON UNIVERSITY 285 MADISON AVENUE, MADISON, NEW JERSEY 07940 PHONE: 973.360.9200 FAX: 973.360.9330 EMAIL: [email protected]   The 2016 Société Mondiale du Vin National Weekend and Young Sommeliers Competition Finals will be held in Sonoma, CA April 2830, 2016. Join us in the heart of wine country!

Mondiale members can again attend the finals of the Chaîne Young Sommeliers Competition, which this year is presented by Moët & Chandon, whom we are thrilled to welcome as the new lead sponsor of our competition.. The competition finals were last year’s most popular event with attending members. We’re also expanding our wine education opportunities with wine tastings led by Master Sommeliers, Masters of Wine, and famed vintners. On Thursday April 28, our Welcome Reception at our host hotel, the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country in Santa Rosa, will be preceded by three great new wine education sessions. In the first, the CIA’s top wine educator, Master Sommelier Bob Bath, leads a blind tasting of wines aged in both cork and screwcap. How do the wines compare? In the second tasting, we will sample delicious and affordable Bordeaux with Master of Wine Mary Gorman-McAdams while learning about the different Bordeaux appellations. And in the third tasting, a representative of Hennessy will present top Cognacs and help us learn more about this complex crafted beverage.

Friday features three sensational events. First, some 20 artisan winemakers from various Sonoma terroirs will pour and discuss their award-winning wines at the walk-around 2016 Taste of Sonoma County accompanied by a buffet lunch and offerings from gourmet local food producers. Friday afternoon is the finals of the Chaîne Young Sommeliers Competition now presented by Moët & Chandon. For the second year, Mondiale members can watch the three best 30-and-under sommeliers in the country display their knowledge, service, and tasting skills under the sharp eyes of the judges. You can even taste the exam wines yourself as the competitors do. Friday evening we travel to the historic Carriage House on the grounds of the Charles Krug estate in Napa. We’ll crown the Best Young Sommelier in America after two days of competition. Our special dinner guest will be top California winemaker Cathy Corison, whose wine we’ll enjoy, among others, with dinner.

Saturday includes three special wine experiences to choose from. Two have a common theme we’re calling the “Magical History Tour.” You’ll step back in time to the original heyday for California winemaking in the 1970s, when experiments were wild and crazy, scientific knowledge was limited but growing, and California wines started to win international acclaim. Our first historical tour option is to Inglenook (formerly Niebaum-Coppola). In the 1940s and 1950s Inglenook was the highest-quality red wine made in America. Then the brand was sold to a large corporation and became a mass-market wine. Francis Ford Coppola has invested much of his fortune to acquire and bring Inglenook back to greatness. He branded his top Rubicon wine, made from the original vineyards, with the Inglenook name and hired Philippe Bascaules, who spent 11 years as winemaker at first growth Chateau Margaux. We’ll meet with Bascaules, taste current Rubicon and top library wines, tour the vineyards, and enjoy lunch. Our other historical tour option is to Buena Vista, the oldest winery in California, owned by Jean-Charles Boisset. He and his family are the largest producer in Burgundy and he owns nine California wineries. Boisset has invested heavily to upgrade both Buena Vista’s wines and historical buildings. We’ll tour, enjoy lunch, and taste Buena Vista wines (including from the library) and Boisset’s luxe 95-point JCB wines. The third choice for your Saturday will be unique wine education programs. At our host hotel Master Sommeliers, Masters of Wine, and winemakers will lead wine tasting seminars designed just for you. One unusual wine technology session could transform how you think about winemaking. Details on these special opportunities are attached. The seminar program also includes a tasty lunch.

Saturday evening, our gala induction dinner will be held at our hotel, which created a spectacular Chaîne meal for us on our previous visit in 2013 and will do so again this year. Our special guest at this year’s gala is top winemaker David Ramey. The wines he’ll share with us are among the greatest in California.

Join us for this great weekend of wine, food, and fun in Sonoma. Space for events is limited, so make your reservations today!

Cheers, and Vive la Société!

How to Taste Wine Like a Master:    Master Sommelier David Glancy, Founder of the  San Francisco Wine School, will teach the  disciplined method that wine masters use to assess  a wine in their glass, decide its quality, and  remember later what they tasted.  You’ll use this  knowledge every day!  Six wines blind.   Nagasawa (A&D)  Indicate A or B by checking a box at right:

B. 11:15am – 12:45pm – Session for all attendees:  C.

Rational Velvet: Postmodern Winemaking in Action.                This will challenge your wine assumptions.  Wineries claim wine is made in the vineyard, but it takes plenty of  work to make a top Cabernet with a ripe, velvet texture and moderate alcohol.  Join winemaker and author  Clark Smith, the man who has led the charge for reverse‐osmosis, micro‐oxygenation, and other winemaking  technologies, to discover how top wines are really made.  Technology (“manipulation”) can reveal terroir  rather than obscure it, says Smith.  Taste six wines, and also learn why "wine is liquid music."  Golden Gate (A&B)

1:00pm – 2:00pm – SEATED GROUP LUNCH PROVIDED Sonoma Ballroom & Terrace    2:15pm – 3:30pm – Choose One:  D. Napa Terroir: River, Volcanoes, Dust, and Fog.                Terroir may be a French word, but terroir exists in  America, too.  Explore the huge range of conditions  just in the confines of the Napa Valley that produces  remarkably varied wines grown just a mile or two  apart.  Vast soil differences, major temperature  contrasts, elevation changes, variability in fog, and  many other factors lead to distinctly different wines.   Taste six wines from various corners of Napa and  learn what gives them variety.  Leader of this session  is Andrey Ivanov, 2015 winner of our young  sommeliers competition.  Golden Gate (A&B)  Indicate D or E by checking a box at right:

E. Biodynamics: Science or Witchcraft?  The strange concept of biodynamic winemaking is  sweeping across Burgundy and other areas of Europe,  with some converts in the U.S.  It’s a big change in  how grapes are grown, and some of the techniques  may sound like voodoo.  Blind‐taste six biodynamic  and non‐biodynamic wines to see if you perceive the  differences that some winemakers swear by.  Is it  science, religion or both?  Does it work?  Master  Sommelier and founder of the San Francisco Wine  School David Glancy leads the session.  Golden Gate C
