Registration for Workshop 1 Workshop 1 – Hospital Bill Auditing Skills (Part 1) Speaker: Dave Eklof, RN, BSN, CMAS This 8 hour workshop will provide the beginning medical auditor with basic principles of auditing and basic techniques on the process of conducting an audit, as well as identifying the tools and resources available to the medical auditor. The attendee will have the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned while conducting a sample clinical audit. RN, BSN, CMAS Wednesday, May 11, 2016 Registration Open Lunch (on own) Workshop 2 –Auditing Surgical Services Claims Speaker: Speaker: Laurie Laxton, RN, BSN, CMAS, RAC-CT Presented both from an operating room nurse and external auditor point of view, attendees will be given a pictorial tour of the entire surgical process from the Preoperative suite, through the Intraoperative procedure, transitioning finally into the PACU. Common and uncommon surgical supplies/charges will be discussed, as well as, an introduction to Anesthesia medications and supplies. The session will end with a meticulous breakdown of operating reports and anesthesia records.

2016 Speaker Biographies David Eklof RN, Executive Director, Clinical Services, Data-Metrix, Inc has more than 20 years experience in the patient financial auditing field working both as an internal and external nurse auditor. He has functioned as an HBA trainer and developed a training manual for Data-Metrix Nurse Auditors. David also has served as a quality control monitor of audit results for nurses in the field. Rebekah Evans, CPC, CPC-I - Ms. Evans is a QA Specialist with Advize Health, a firm providing medical auditing and consulting services. Ms. Evans has worked in the healthcare industry for 15 years and became a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) in 2003. Her focus areas include educational instructor, project management, surgical and E/M code auditing, chart auditing, claims processing, customer service, custom reporting, data analysis, and policy/procedure writing and implementation. Ms. Evans is an excellent educator, conducting presentations and webinars, as well as writing content for Advize Health’s newsletter and blog. Melissa Jewett, CPC, CPMA - Ms. Jewett has worked in the coding and billing industry for close to 15 years, with a focus on coding general surgery claims for the last 7 years. Her focus areas include for OB/GYN, podiatry, and family medicine specialties. She has conducted Evaluation and Management (E/M) audits, utilizing both the 1995 and 1997 Documentation Guidelines, as well as modifier audits focused on bundling and unbundling issues. Ms. Jewett provides educational seminars to providers and gives the necessary feedback following the audits. She strives to stay updated on coding, billing, and documentation policies and has also worked with various practices as an Electronic Health Records (EHR) Trainer/Implementer. In that capacity, she had many opportunities to teach, monitor, and assist practices with the daunting yet rewarding task of achieving meaningful use. She confidently assisted concerned providers during their meaningful use audits, and offered industry trusted advice for creation and implementation of a Security Risk Analysis. Ms. Jewett has been a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) since 2004 and Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA) since 2014. Elizabeth Lamkin, MHA, CEO, After 20 years as a highly innovative hospital CEO, she now brings effective solutions to all types of hospitals and healthcare providers. Elizabeth specializes in system development, quality and billing compliance. Throughout her career, Elizabeth has achieved numerous recognitions for quality as well as patient, staff and physician satisfaction. Elizabeth has extensive experience in both start-ups and turnarounds. She is a nationally known speaker and author on billing compliance including CMS Recovery Auditors. Elizabeth brings enterprise wide solutions that begin with the Governing Board and the strategic plan. Elizabeth received her BAIS degree, Cum Laude, from the University of South Carolina and a Masters in Healthcare Administration also from University of South Carolina, Delta Omega Honor Society. She was named outstanding MHA student and won the Suzie James Yates scholarship. Elizabeth has always been involved in community and charity work. As a community leader, in 2010 Elizabeth served on an eleven person Visioning Task Force for Hilton Head Island, SC. She now serves on the Greater Island Council to assist in implementation of the plan. She is also currently Board Chair for United Way of the Low country and serves on the Board of the Coastal Discovery Museum. Laurie Laxton, RN, BSN, CMAS, RAC-CT - Laurie has over 25 years of nursing experience in a variety of areas. Graduating from UCLA, she specialized in the Orthopedic Trauma Surgery field. As Nurse Coordinator of the UCLA Hand Center and later, the Hip and Pelvic reconstructive division of the Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles Orthopedic Department she was involved in cutting edge technology and care. In the late 1990s Laurie started a consulting business advising school districts and day camps on CPR/First Aid, medication administration, care planning, and incident reporting. In 2009, she became a Nurse auditor, contracting with 3 national firms to conduct hospital and Skilled Nursing facility audits in several states. Currently she is an Education and Support Specialist at an industry leading software company who offers products to help ensure quality improvement, risk reduction, and correct billing practices for the Long Term Care industry. Omar Pérez Aybar, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Miami OIG Regional office has been involved in many investigations that have uncovered hundreds fraudulent Medicare schemes by durable medical equipment suppliers, home health agencies, physicians, and rehabilitation facilities. The investigations resulted in nearly 700 convictions and the recovery of almost one billion dollars. In 2010, Omar was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge and oversees 5 of the 10 HEAT teams operating in Miami. In this role he supervised the investigation of a company that defrauded Medicare of over $87 million and whose owner received the highest sentence for healthcare fraud in US history. In 2014 Omar was honored as a recipient of a Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal (Sammies). These medals are given to public servants whose outstanding achievements have improved the lives of Americans and others across the globe. The Sammies have earned a reputation as one of the most prestigious awards dedicated to honoring America's Civil Servants.

Dorothy Steed, has 38 years of experience in both hospital and physician billing, coding, reimbursement and claims management, specializing in Medicare requirements. She is credentialed in Medical Coding, Compliance, Utilization Management, Utilization Review, Medical Auditing, Clinical Documentation Improvement and Patient Accounts. She holds specialty credentials in Evaluation and Management & Medical Auditing and Radiology Coding and has provided training workshops in all of these areas. Jody Taylor, RN, Revenue Cycle Executive, serves as a client engagement specialist with responsibilities in financial performance cross the clinically driven revenue cycle; specializing in connecting clinical documentation to charge capture, resulting in improved client revenue integrity and financial performance. Jody joined Cerner in 2015 to assist clients with performance improvement thereby enhancing client relationships. She facilitates Lean and Six Sigma principles while conducting root cause analysis of workflows in both clinical and charge integrity. Jody’s track record reflects significant revenue integrity capture with optimization by leveraging the clinically driven revenue cycle, thereby creating checks and balances between clinical and financial using automation of workflows within multiple departments across multiple regions to gain efficiency. In addition, Jody provides insight into clinical workflow and alignment with revenue cycle initiatives while ensuring revenue and clinical integrity. Prior to Cerner, Jody worked a large multi hospital system as the Assistant Director of Nurse Auditing. In that capacity, Jody was accountable for complete integration of clinical documentation (physician and clinician) to charge capture and revenue integrity. In this role, Jody virtually irradiated manual charge entry while being responsible for a work force of 85 auditors across all clinical disciplines. Jody assisted in design, development, training, and execution of clinically driven revenue cycle road maps which resulted in moving half of clearing house edits up stream into clinical workflow, producing ultimate clean claim rates and significant efficiencies across the entire revenue cycle, thereby reducing risk and compliance issues resulting in improved patient safety outcomes. During the design and development of the clinically driven revenue cycle, Jody was awarded Auditor of the Year in 2012 by the American Association of Medical Audit Specialists. Jody started as a Pediatric ICU Nurse in 1994, working in fields such as Pediatric Open Heart, Emergency Medicine and Transplantation. Jody went on to continue her development for the next 21yrs with Adventist Health Systems. During such time, she completed Lean Principles training in 2002 and became the AHS Nurse auditor in 2006. In that role Jody designed, develop, tested, trained and implemented both Legacy and Windows Revenue Cycle IT applications.
