welcome Welcome to the 37th Conference of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME 37) at Kiel University from July 28 to August 2, 2013. “Mathematics Learning Across the Life Span” has been chosen as the theme of the conference to stress that mathematics education is not restricted to school education but already starts in early childhood and continues after school as lifelong learning. This booklet provides information about the conference and how to participate in its scientific and social activities.

evening meals For Monday and Tuesday participants should make their own arrangements for evening meals. For further information concerning the farewell lunch on Friday, please check the cultural and social program on page 93. Tipping: In German restaurants guests usually give a voluntary tip of about 5 – 10 %, if they are satisfied with the quality of food and service provided.

Ticket for public transport is printed on your badge. There are three different colored badges: Blue for participants / Light blue for accompanying persons / Yellow for local organizers and helpers

internet access Wireless internet access is available at the conference sites. The easiest way to connect to the internet is to use Eduroam (www.eduroam.org) which is available at Kiel University. So, if you have an Eduroam account at your home institution, you should use this account during the conference. For all other participants: you can find information about a temporary Eduroam access on the PME USB flash drive. A personalized username and password are provided at a special desk during registration and at the conference office (see map on page 14 and 16). Moreover, during the conference we will provide a second option for wireless internet access in three rooms. Two are equipped with PCs and laptops (EWF building, S1, room 514 and room 517) and in the other one you have space to work at your own laptop (EWF building, S1, room 506) (see map on page 17).

scientific program

language The official language of the conference is English.

equipment Every room is equipped with data projector (in German: beamer) and a laptop with Windows 7, Office 2010 and internet access via Firefox. For any inquiries regarding technical issues you may contact on-site helpers in blue T-shirts with conference logo and the conference office. Please remember to bring the following equipment to your presentation: * your own wireless presenter, if needed * your own electrical adaptor, if you are using equipment from another country

the scientific program includes the following activities :

Plenary Lectures and Plenary Panel National Presentation (NP): The goal of a National Presentation is to present to PME members of other countries the specific history, traditions, and perspectives as well as the most important results of the national mathematics education community. esearch Forums: The goal of a Research Forum is to create dialogue and discussion, by R offering PME members more elaborated presentations, reactions, and discussions on topics on which substantial research has been undertaken and which continue to hold the active interest of a large subgroup of PME. A 90-minute slot will be devoted to each Research Forum. Discussion Groups and Workings Sessions: The aim of these group activities is to achieve greater exchange of information and ideas related to the Psychology of Mathematics Education. Both types of groups have been allotted with 90-minutes slots. Discussion Groups and Working Sessions will run simultaneously, and so participants will not be able to attend both types of activity. Research Reports: Each Research Report will be allotted a total time of 40 minutes: 20 minutes for the oral presentation and 20 minutes for discussion.

20

scientific program

Short Oral Communications: Short Oral Communications will be presented in groups of three. Each individual Short Oral communication is allocated 10 minutes for the oral presentation. As soon as all presentations are finished, a 30 minutes period is devoted to discussion on all three presentations. However, the chair may decide that it would be better to have 10 minutes discussion of each paper immediately following the 10 minutes presentation. Please ask the chair of the session how to proceed. Poster Sessions: The poster sessions are scheduled for Monday, July 29 11:00 -12:00 Friday, Aug 02 11:00 - 12:10 The authors will be available at their posters for questions and discussions. Ad hoc Meetings: Ad hoc Meetings are a new form of conference activity, approved in 2010. During the conference, PME provides time slots and rooms for meetings of ‘ad hoc’ groups. The idea is that researchers can meet and discuss research topics which spontaneously came up during discussions of previous presentations at the conference. The Ad hoc Meetings are reserved only for discussions; presentations or a continuation of a Research Report or Short Oral Communication are not allowed. To organize an Ad hoc Meeting, at least two persons should prepare an announcement with a short and precise description of the topic, the names of organizers, and the preferred time slot, and deliver it to the PME Administrative Manager at the conference. The Administrative Manager will then assign times and rooms. Since there are only a few time slots and rooms, proposals will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Policy Meeting: The Policy Meeting gives space for an open discussion with the Members of the International Committee. All participants are encouraged to attend this meeting on Tuesday, July 30 at 14:00 in the EWF building, lecture hall 3 (see map „Lecture halls“ on page 17). ewcomer Meeting: The aim of the Newcomer Meeting is to deliver new PME parN ticipants an insight into the work of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education. All newcomers are cordially invited to join this gathering during lunch break on Monday, July 29 at 12:20 at the 1st floor of the Cafeteria (Mensa 1) (see map on page 7). Annual General Meeting: As noted in the PME onstitution, the Annual General Meeting is held each year during the Conference. At the AGM the policy and the activities of PME as organisation will be decided. All PME members may attend and vote, both for candidates for the International Committee and for issues that are on the agenda. Moreover, this year a new PME president will be elected. If PME members want to bring in new ideas or critics in a less formal context, then the Policy Meeting is the right place. It is held on Tuesday after the lunch break (see above).

cultural and social program

Founded in the 13th century Kiel looks back to a long history and is of great social-political significance for the federal state Schleswig-Holstein. The lively sailing city is the gateway to Scandinavia and the Baltic States and welcomes several cruise liners and ferries every week. The Local Organizing Committee has made an effort to offer an interesting cultural and social program so that delegates can get acquainted with the cultural identity of Northern Germany and enjoy their stay in Kiel.

sunday , july 28 * 16:00 – 19:00 Opening Ceremony The Opening Ceremony will take place in the Audimax (see map on page 14). After a warm welcome to the participants from all over the world, the PME president will open the conference and the first plenary presentation will introduce the audience to the conference theme „Mathematics learning across the life span“. The following cultural program will provide a first inside into the Northern German culture. * 19:00 Social Reception Get together after the Opening Ceremony and enjoy snacks and beverages.

wednesday , july 31 * 1 4:00 – 23:00 Excursions (with dinner). The busses will start precisely at 14:00, please be on time. The arrival back in Kiel is scheduled 22:30, the busses will stop near the hotels. Enjoy one of our eight excursions and discover some of the most beautiful parts of Northern Germany. Your color-coded excursion ticket will be provided with your registration material and final information will be provided in the bus. Please notice that in case of emergency a phone number is given on your ticket (+49 173 894 18 44). Particpants of Excursions A and B (the two Kiel excursions) will meet in front of the Audimax entrance. All other participants will find the places of departure for Excursions C – H (see map on page 13). The bus you have to enter for your excursion will be labeled with the same color and letter as shown on your ticket. Moreover, your guide will wait at the bus and carry a color-coded sign-board. For any inquiries you may contact the on-site helpers in blue shirts with conference logo.
