Message from the Executive Director Dear Friends and Supporters of Concordia Language Villages, While 2009-2010 marked a number of significant milestones for the Language Villages – the knighting of one of our most respected deans, new funding for our programs, new contributions by our staff to the field of language education – our most remarkable achievement continues to be the youth, families, educators, and adults who return year after year to learn more about themselves, the world and others in the pursuit of greater global fluency.

Christine Schulze, J.D. Executive Director, Concordia Language Villages Vice President for International Development, Concordia College

As we begin the celebration of our 50th anniversary year, we are saddened by the loss of the beloved president of Concordia College, Dr. Pamela Jolicoeur, who died unexpectedly in June 2010. Pam led with passion and conviction and was an inspiration to all around her. In her six years as president, she brought national and international visibility to Concordia’s commitment to global education. A memorial scholarship fund bearing Dr. Jolicoeur’s name will offer annual scholarships to youth interested in attending the Arabic or Portuguese Language Village, as these two languages were added in her tenure as president. Please let us know if you are interested in making a contribution to this fund that will continue Pam’s legacy of excellence in global learning and international understanding.

The mission of Concordia Language Villages is to prepare young people for responsible citizenship in our global community.

Tove Dahl Knighting Tove Dahl, dean of Skogfjorden, is also now a Knight of the First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, Ridder 1. klasse av Den Kongelige Norske Fortjenstorden, by order of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway. During the academic year, Tove is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Tromsø and serves on the University’s Centre for Peace Studies. Her work in the field of peace studies is more than an academic exercise – she lives this central piece of the Language Villages mission in her daily life and works to make it real and accessible for villagers and staff. “The Norwegian Language Village is an educationally rich setting that reflects the vision and leadership of Dr. Tove Dahl,” said late Concordia College President Jolicoeur of Tove on the occasion of her knighting in the summer of 2009. “As the primary writer of the Skogfjorden curriculum, Tove has not only embedded strong language-learning principles, but also contentrich material on modern Norway. She ensures that Norway’s prominent role in peacemaking is understood and experienced by all villagers,” Jolicoeur continued. Indeed the villagers all understand the ways that language, culture and peace studies weave together to become the fabric of the Skogfjorden experience. By studying prominent Norwegians, learning how language reflects the way we see the world, and practicing the daily habits necessary for a positive community, villagers and staff at Skogfjorden develop the skills necessary for positive global citizenship. On staff for over 30 years, Tove has been a role model for hundreds of staff and dozens of other colleague deans. "Tove Dahl is a dean’s dean," says Patricia Thornton, Director of Summer Programs at Concordia Languag Villages. "Her peers look to her for advice and counsel. All that she does, from leading songs, to counseling young learners, to working with staff, to language and culture instruction, to curriculum development, to raising her beautiful son, she does with grace, wit, charm, and warmth. Tove is a sterling example of excellence in teaching, leadership in education, and pure goodness in humanity." “I can think of nothing more interesting and of greater purpose,” Dahl says, “than to help kids discover what they care about and help them find ways to do something meaningful with that far beyond Skogfjorden’s borders.” 4 Concordia Language Villages

L aunch of the Forest Concordia Language Villages has been leasing Wilder Forest from the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation since 2005 during the summers to host a Spanish Language Village. El Lago del Bosque Wilder has operated with 110 beds each summer since that date. However, beginning in 2009, Concordia Language Villages entered into an agreement to lease Wilder Forest the remaining nine months of the year with a particular focus on Spanish and Chinese field trips for Twin Cities schools. Operating under the direction of Martin Graefe, director of year-round programs, the first year of this initiative was successful. “The response from teachers and parents about the Villages new year-round presence in the Twin Cities with programs at The Forest has been fantastic and reaffirms our decision to expand our programming there. In addition, the first year saw a higher than expected interest from groups who want to host workshops, retreats, and meetings. Based on these relationships, I am tremendously optimistic about this new venture and our ability to introduce new generations of villagers to the Language Villages,” says Graefe. 2009-2010 enrollment at The Forest – as the facility is now known – totaled close to 600 participants in a variety of day and overnight fieldtrips, family and adult programs, and educator workshops. With close proximity to the 3.2 million residents of Minneapolis/St. Paul, a strategic goal of the Forest is to provide school groups with a more compact version of the Language Villages trademark immersion experience and then encourage families and teachers to explore longer-term programs in Bemidji.

The Forest will continue to be the home of El Lago del Bosque Wilder in the summer months. However, there are plans to increase program options for youth, adults, families and teachers during the academic year. Specifically, 2010/11 will see an increase in Spring Break Villages, programs that offer a one week session for individuals and school groups during weeks that many schools are on break in March and April. A pilot Spring Break Village program in March of 2009 featured 15 villagers who participated in a Spanish immersion week.

Confucius Classroom Consul General Ping Huang from the Consulate of the People’s Republic of China in Chicago visited The Forest and helped dedicate it as a Confucius Classroom in the fall of 2009. The Confucius Classroom designation was granted through the Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota with funding coming from the government of the People's Republic of China. The Institute awarded Concordia Language Villages a $50,000 grant to establish a Confucius classroom at Concordia's new retreat center, The Forest. The designation and award supported new curriculum to offer students an overnight retreat in Chinese language, culture, history and current events. Students paid a nominal fee to attend with the grant covering the remaining costs. Consul General Ping Huang observed students from Fridley High School learning Chinese and participating in Chinese activities such as calligraphy and music.

Sen ˉ Lín Hú, the Chinese Language Village, celebrated its 25th summer in 2009 with an event that drew former deans, villagers, staff, and notable Chinese language educators. Hosted by Sen ˉ Lín Hú in conjunction with International Day in July, the program featured performances by Sen ˉ Lín Hú villagers, comments from honored guests, and an authentic Chinese meal featuring a wide variety of dishes from Zhua Chao Yu (fried prawns) to stir fried green beans. Among the guests was Margaret Wong, who teaches Chinese at the Breck School in Minneapolis and who served on the original steering committee when the Chinese Language village was founded in 1984. Wong feels that Sen ˉ Lín Hú meets a very specific need in Chinese language education: “Chinese is a challenging language to learn, and sometimes students give up before they get very far. By teaching the language and culture together in an exciting environment, Sen ˉ Lín Hú helps students maintain their interest and enthusiasm for the language.” When the Chinese Language Village first opened, many wondered if the program would be sustainable or feasible in the long term due to the challenges of finding staff coupled with limited ˉ Lín Hú is now one of the fastest-growing demand for Chinese language instruction in America. Gamla Upsala “I believe it is important to help Concordia Language Villages construct a Swedish village complete with culturally authentic buildings to preserve Swedish language and culture for future generations. At Sjölunden there is a sense of family … I am happy to be a part of it.” Kenneth Berglund, Trustee, The Raymond and Florence Berglund Family Foundation

Sjölunden, the Swedish Language Village, dedicated a new building in honor of Florence and Raymond Berglund at a ceremony in conjunction with the August International Day celebration. “Gamla Upsala is the most flexible housing space in the Swedish Language Village,” according to Amy Rutten, construction and special projects coordinator at Concordia Language Villages. “Divided into two halves, with one half housing the dean’s apartment and the other half accommodating up to eight staff or villagers, the two halves are separated by an outdoor covered walkway, offering privacy and building community at the same time. Gamla Upsala continues to build on the densely spaced fishing village design and fulfills a critical role in establishing the courtyard area.” The flexibility will allow for growth in Swedish enrollment as Sjölunden continues to establish itself as a center for Swedish language and culture on the national stage. Ken and Doris Berglund, instrumental in securing the funding for Gamla Upsala, recognize the building as a fitting tribute to Ken’s parents. Specifically, both Florence and Raymond supported Swedish cultural organizations throughout their lives and were particularly supportive of those called to serve and help others. The fact that Gamla Upsala augments the programs at Sjölunden by providing additional space for staff housing is exactly what Raymond and Florence would have found appealing.

Getting to Know Europe

What type of Picture do we want here?

Concordia Language Villages received a substantial grant from the Delegation of the European Union to support efforts to raise the profile and awareness of EU countries in the upper Midwest. The grant, designed to highlight EU approaches to sustainability issues and the EU links with the Upper Midwest, and underscore the EU’s unity in diversity, brought embassy officials and other members of the consular corp together to Minneapolis/St. Paul for two days. While in the Twin Cities the delegates participated in a program of outreach to schools, a festival celebrating Europe’s birthday and a gala event featuring a panel discussion on the importance of Europe as a trading partner with the region. The panel discussion was moderated by The Honorable John “Jack” Tunheim, U.S. District Judge for the District of Minnesota and was comprised of representatives from the German, Austrian, and Danish embassies in Washington, D.C., as well as Hubert Joly, President and CEO of the Carlson Companies. Representatives of embassies and consulates of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Portugual, Spain, and Sweden visited over 25 schools accompanied by Language Villages administrators as well as faculty from Concordia College. Many of the embassy officials worked to raise awareness of the cultural, social and economic connections between Minnesota and their home countries. Søren Jensen, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Royal Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C. spoke eloquently about green technology projects that Danish and Minnesota companies are exploring together.

Summit, a simulation that provides an opportunity for villagers attending International Day to work together to solve a political, cultural, or strategic challenge. The 2009 Global Summit which took place at both the July and August International Days focused on EU membership and the challenges facing the EU as it explores expanding membership.

Online Teacher Training Module Funded Concordia Language Villages received STARTALK funding from the United States government to develop an online training module to help language educators increase their capacity to teach in the language. The multimedia unit titled "Staying in the Target Language" was produced after filming and editing an instructional setting to provide teachers with a look at how they can teach using as little English as possible. Donna Clementi, director of education and research, designed and supervised the production of the project. “The multimedia project is an excellent opportunity to share strategies that make the target language comprehensible to language learners,” according to Clementi. “We were especially pleased to share a conversation with Dr. Carol Ann Dahlberg about the importance of staying in the target language. Dr. Dahlberg is Professor emeritus from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., where she taught methods classes for K-12 foreign languages.” The video is available online as part of a library of similar federally funded projects designed to increase the effectiveness of teaching in strategic languages. Other organizations funded for the same project include Rutgers, Stanford, UCLA, and UC-Berkeley.

The grant also funded a specific curriculum designed for International Day for villagers participating in the Global

Patricia Pia Johnson

Renae Lacher

Frank Stellman

Patricia Pia Johnson celebrated her 25th year on staff this summer during a special Midsommar event at Sjölunden, the Swedish Language Village. Joined by dozens of Swedish staff, former villagers and families, Pia’s event began with a traditional Swedish smörgåsbord and ended with a Midsommar dance performed by the villagers. Commenting on Pia’s 25 years on staff, Sjölunden dean Allison Magda Spenader spoke warmly of Pia’s love for reading, her dedication to children, and inspiration as a colleague and mentor to so many Swedish staff and villagers.

While the dynamic and exciting staff members that inspire villagers in the summer and academic year are pivotal to the success of our programs, without Renae Lacher’s dedication and hard work none of them would work for the Language Villages. Renae Lacher has processed over 25,000 staff contracts in her years in the staffing department at Concordia Language Villages and has been a quiet hero in the Moorhead office for 25 years. Known for her infectious laugh and positive attitude, Renae has been a welcome, friendly voice as staff from Cameroon to Argentina to Egypt navigate U.S. visa regulations en route to becoming staff at the Villages.

Frank Stelman has worked in the facilities department as a caretaker for 25 years at the Turtle River Lake site near Bemidji, Minn. While Frank has shampooed thousands of rugs and changed hundreds of light bulbs, he is most loved for his friendly smile, comfortable greeting, and genuine interest in others. He champions the mission of the Language Villages by helping create and maintain the spaces where global understanding happens; Frank embodies the mission by demonstrating compassion and kindness in his interactions with others every day.

In 1960, Gerhard Haukebo, a Concordia College faculty member, suggested the College initiate an experimental program using immersion techniques to teach language. The intent of the program was to teach young people about other languages and cultures, while giving Concordia students the opportunity to gain practical teaching experience. Concordia College sponsored the project in the summer of 1961. The College rented Luther Crest Bible Camp, north of Alexandria, Minn., for the first two-week German session. "Camp Waldsee," which was limited to 72 campers aged 9-12, was a resounding success. Interest in the program increased steadily and more "Villages" were added. Now, in addition to seven year-round, architecturally authentic sites on Turtle River Lake near Bemidji, Minn., several seasonal sites throughout Minnesota host Language Villages every summer.
