Elements and Principles of Design Shape, Balance and Repetition Art Studio

Objectives:

Students  will  paint  a  self-‐portrait/portrait  in  the  style  of  Gustav   Klimt's  golden  phase.    Students  will  use  at  least  3  bold,  warm  colors   and  geometric  shapes  repetitively  within  the  organic  shapes  of  their   image  to  create  decorative  patterns.  The  painting  should  have  either   asymmetrical  or  symmetrical  balance  in  the  composition.

NVAS Standards: Standard #2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work. Standard #3: Refine and complete artistic work. Standard #7: Perceive and analyze artistic work Standard #9: Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.

Materials/Resources:

Per student: 1 canvas board 9x12, 1 2B pencil, 1 plastic cup, 1 brush, 1 photograph of family member or themselves, water, acrylic paint: gold, black, red, blue, yellow. Small plastic trays (aka palette) Examples

SEQUENCE 1. Introduce A. Shape -organic shape- free-form, unpredictable and flowing in appearance - associated with things from the natural world -irregular or asymmetrical form -ie. Trees, leaves, fruit - Geometric shape- a set of points or vertices and lines connecting the points - ie. Triangles, squares, circles

B. Balance -Symmetrical balance- If an imaginary line is drawn through the center of the work, both sides are the same and are balanced. -Asymmetrical balance- Both sides are not identical, and differ from one another. But elements are arranged so that there is a sense of balance.

C. Repetition- an object or form that’s repeated. - can be combined with other repeating forms to create patterns.

2. Present Emilie Floge, Gustav Klimt, 1902, gold leaf and oil paint -Repetitive use of geometric shapes in Emilie’s dress. *Is this a asymmetrical or symmetrical painting? -Asymmetrical balance with Emilie placement in composition overall -Geometric shapes form organic body figure.

Adele Bloch-Bauer I, Gustav Klimt, 1907, gold leaf and oil paint -Repetitive use of geometric shapes in Emilie’s dress. -Asymmetrical balance with Adele’s placement in composition overall -Symmetrical balance in the placement of Adele with surrounding patterns.

Adele Bloch-Bauer II,, Gustav Klimt, 1912, oil paint -Repetitive use of geometric shapes in Emilie’s dress. -Asymmetrical balance of background patterns -Symmetrical balance in position of Adele and frontal view of Adele. -Geometric shapes do not form the figure entirely, but it used for the intricate background *What colors does Klimt use? - Use of red, blue, and yellow are boldly used Tree of life Gustav Klimt, 1905, oil paint and gold leaf -Repetitive use of geometric shapes in figure’s clothing and tree. -Asymmetrical balance in the position of the figures -Symmetrical balance in overall composition since tree can be split in half and figures are placed on both sides of the tree. -Use of gold leaf mixed with bold colors in the shapes. *How is this painting different from the four previous paintings?

Lady with Hat and Feather Boa, Gustav Klimt, 1909, oil paint -Symmetrical balance in position of lady. *In what ways is this painting different from other Klimt’s paintings we saw earlier? -No use of geometric shapes to create patterns -Limited palette: black, yellow, red, blue

3. Check Understanding Ask students questions: How does Klimt use geometric shapes in the figures? What areas or paintings demonstrate symmetrical and asymmetrical balance? How could you incorporate asymmetrical and symmetrical balance in same composition? How do you think Klimt was able to use gold leaf with oil paint? How does Klimt incorporate bold colors into his gold leaf paintings? 4. Apply: Balanced portrait in the style of Klimt’s Golden Phase Step 1: Students wither chose to do a self-portrait or portrait of family member, and bring in a photograph from home or one will be taken and printed in class. Step 2: Then, students will choose at least 3 geometric shapes to use repetitively within the organic shape of the figure or in the background. Step 3: Students will draw thumbnail sketches of the photograph and experiment the layout of geometric shapes to create patterns. Step 4: Students will then draw basic contour lines of the image on the canvas board, focusing on the organic and geometric shapes of the figure. They will be instructed to focus on placement of figure on the canvas board to create asymmetrical or symmetrical balance. Step 4: Students will use gold, red, blue, yellow acrylic paint to paint their portraits. Step 5: After the paintings are dried, students will have an in class critique session. 5. Assess Informal Assessment of student while working on their paintings. Student comments in critique Did student create a portrait in the style of Klimt’s golden period? Student used at least 3 geometric shapes repetitively? Student used either form of balance in composition? Did student use bold, warm colors in their painting? Formal Assessment of student projects. Total 15 points Good(11-15 pts)

Average(6-10pts)

Poor(0-5pts)

Repetitive use of at least 3 geometric shape Student exceeds requirement by using 4+ geometric shapes repetitively Student meets requirement of using at least 3 geometric shapes repetitively

Use of Bold, warm colors Student exceeds requirement by using 4+ bold, warm colors. Student meets requirement of using at least 3 bold, warm colors.

Asymmetrical and Symmetrical Balance Student exceeds requirement by using both forms of balance

Student doesn’t meet requirement by not using at least 3 geometric shapes repetitively

Student doesn’t meet requirement of using at least 3 bold, warm colors.

Student doesn’t meet requirement of using either form of balance in the composition

Student meets requirement of using either form of balance in composition
