Gregory Norbet ~ Biography

_________________________________________________________ “Long have I waited for your coming home to me and living deeply our new life” Gregory Norbet - Hosea

The world’s largest Catholic Publisher, Oregon Catholic Press, begins Gregory Norbet’s biography stating “he is a respected spiritual leader, composer, singer and retreat director. His specialty is group spiritual development and renewal, using song, Scripture and the spoken word.” All true but it falls short of the bigger picture. Simply put, the music of Gregory Norbet has “provided the soundtrack to the spiritual journey of millions of Catholic Christians for almost 50 years.” Gregory’s own musical journey began early in life, coming from a family that sang together for fun around his grandfather Harry's piano, accompanied by his mother. “For us, music was an expression of happiness and togetherness. It was beautiful and brought light and joy into everyday life.” Through his formative years, music remained a part of Gregory’s life with church choir, high school chorus and college chorus. Then in 1962 at the age of 21, Gregory entered religious life. “While with the Benedictine Monks in Weston, Vermont, I was soon asked to be the choir director, reviewing and teaching chant upon chant for festal seasons, feast days and ordinary ones too. The Second Vatican Council had just begun to happen, but we continued to sing in Latin for a few years, while at the same time attempting to find Chants adapted into English.” “One day shortly before Holy Week, I decided to take a theme or two from the words of Jesus, and put them to a tune, humming and scribbling at the same time. They soon were used in Holy Week liturgies with great interest. The rest is history.” The music composed by Gregory Norbet soon spread throughout the world. The 12 albums released during his 21 years as a Benedictine monk at Weston Priory included some of the Catholic Church’s most loved compositions including Hosea, All I Ask of You, Wherever You Go, Peace, Come To Me, The Lord Jesus and many more. Gregory’s compositions have continued since his days at Weston releasing multiple collections, prayer books and octavos through OCP with continued widespread acceptance at Liturgies throughout the world. Gregory is a graduate of the Institute for Spiritual Leadership in Chicago and received his master’s degree from the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University, Chicago. A founder of the Hosea Foundation, Gregory now serves as director for the organization. The foundation is a not-for-profit ministry dedicated to fostering "the experience of God's love and compassion in the world by promoting spiritual development in individuals and church communities." Gregory and his wife, artist Kathryn Carrington, direct their active lives from their home in Hanover, New Hampshire.
