2011 Compensation and Benefits Report

Executive Summary The salary information presented represents the average and percentile of reported salaries of golf course superintendents with varying qualifications, experience, and responsibilities in a wide range of positions. This information should be viewed as a starting place for salary negotiations by golf course superintendents and their employers. Utilizing the data in this report for salary negotiation purposes should be done with care, comparing like superintendent demographics and the facility profile – location, facility type and size, budget, staffing levels, etc. Keep in mind that for each “bucketed group” the mean (average) is just that, the average. Some individual salaries will be higher and others lower. Staffing philosophy changes from organization to organization and the distribution of salaries using percentiles provides a better picture of where any one individual compares to the group. Employment Profile Summary The average age for all golf course superintendents reporting on the 2011 Compensation and Benefits Survey is 45 years old and on average they have 14.7 years of experience. The average tenure in their current position is 9.5 years. Golf course superintendents are also responsible for 21 employees on average. Certified golf course superintendents make up 25.9% of the responding superintendents. 76.4% of all responding golf course superintendents report that they are a Class A GCSAA member, 72.2% are responsible for 18 holes, 43.4% work at a private golf facility, and 25.0% work at a daily fee/public course. In the 2011 survey, the budget for a facility was broken down into separate component parts based on variances among golf facility budgets. Median budget expenditures are as follows: Maintenance $335,000

Capital $60,000

Water $30,000

Payroll $333,000

Average Salary 4,554 golf course superintendents reported base salary – the average salary among these respondents is $81,044. The average salary reported in 2011 has increased by $2,146 from the 2009 survey, corresponding to a 2.7% increase. Percentile breakdown are as follows: 10th percentile $45,000

25th percentile $55,343

50th percentile $71,275

75th percentile $95,000

90th percentile $128,000

2011 Compensation and Benefits Report Bonus Criteria Of the responding golf course superintendents, 51.1% work for an employer that has a bonus system. The top four metrics used to compute bonuses are: merit/job performance (62.9%), profitability of overall operation (43.0%), staying within budget (37.2%), and achieving predetermined goals (22.0%). Average Number of Hours Worked and Benefits Throughout a seven-day week, golf course superintendents reported working an average of 41 hours in the winter season, 55 hours in the spring season, 60 hours in the summer season, and 51 hours in the fall season. On average, if golf course superintendents could break down personal time off (PTO) into vacation, sick, and personal days, they received 17.5 paid vacation days, 7.4 sick days, and 2.7 personal days. For those receiving a total bucket of PTO they received 15.9 paid time off days. On average, employers recognize 6.4 paid holidays. Paid GCSAA membership is granted to 95.6% of golf course superintendents, 93.6% receive a paid chapter membership, 88.2% receive personal facility privileges, and 82.5% receive seminar/tuition reimbursement. Desire to Become General Managers Of the golf course superintendents responding who are not currently general managers, 14.9% indicated that they are interested in the general manager career path. Of those who are not in regional agronomy management, 16.3% indicated that they are interested in this career path, and of those who are not currently golf facility owners, 9.3% indicated that they are interested in owning their own facility. Reporting Structure Golf course superintendents most often report to a General Manager (37.4%), Owner (15.1%), followed by Green Committee/Board of Directors (15.0%), and Director of Golf (6.4%). Responses less than 2% were grouped to formulate the other category (see figure below; for a complete list see page 58).

Paid chapter membership is granted to 70.7% of assistant superintendents, 70.3% receive personal facility privileges, and 63.9% receive a paid GCSAA membership. Certified Golf Course Superintendents The total response includes 1,154 certified golf course superintendents. Their statistics include the following:   

Survey Results Methodology The information presented in this report is based on a survey of GCSAA Class A and Superintendent Members, conducted from December 2010 through January 2011. GCSAA contracted with enetrix, A Division of Gallup, Inc. to administer the survey on a secure web site and invited superintendents to participate. A total of 9,232 electronic invitations were distributed, of which 275 emails were identified as being invalid (i.e. non-deliverable address). As a result, 8,957 invitations were delivered to GCSAA members with valid email addresses. In total, 4,069 complete and 606 partial surveys were recorded. After the cleaning process, the sample contained 4,554 usable data sets - a response rate of 50.8%. Salary Information The figures presented in this report are intended to be used as general guidelines regarding base compensation and benefits. The survey does include some members outside the United States, specified in the tables as "Canada" and "Outside the US and Canada.” All data was collected as U.S. dollars.

2011 Compensation and Benefits Report Confidentiality and Privacy All survey responses are held in the strictest confidence and were collected and tabulated by enetrix. As a third party survey provider, enetrix does not share individual responses with anyone including GCSAA employees. To ensure respondent confidentiality, the rules listed below have been put in place; however, all responses are included in the "total" calculations. The rationale for this reporting rule is to increase anonymity. Mean – only shown for more than 5 observations 50th Percentile – only shown for more than 5 observations 25th & 75th Percentile – only shown for more than 10 observations 10th & 90th Percentile – only shown for more than 20 observations Statistical Notes The reliability of a statistical summary depends, to a large degree, on the number of observations used in the summary. The value of a survey is its ability to provide accurate comparisons for the user. Generally, the user would like to look at close comparisons; e.g., certified superintendents on private courses in a particular state. Although an attempt has been made to exhibit a variety of data, highly detailed statistics are not shown due to the reduced sample size. Therefore, please exercise caution in interpreting results when the number of responses is small. It is suggested that the user pay greatest attention to the range of values between the 25th and 75th percentile. Reliability when comparing data is also affected by the consistency of the sample. Therefore, comparing results from one survey period to the results from another survey period must be done with some caution, particularly when reviewing differences in results of data cuts between survey years, as some variance may result from the differences in the sample. Certainly, comparisons may be viewed as a snapshot of that time period, so that trend assumptions may be tracked. The total number of responses (n) is indicated for most questions. Reported percentages are a percent of the total respondents to each question. Failure to respond to one specific question did not eliminate that respondent's answers from being included in other areas of the survey. Finally, because numerical entries are rounded to the nearest significant digit, resulting percentages may not always add to 100. Statistical Terms and Abbreviations Mean: The mean or average is the sum of all observations divided by the number of observations. The mean is sensitive to the effects of extreme values. Median: The median is the middle value in a list ranked from high to low. The median provides a measure of central tendency unbiased by extreme values. Number of Responses (n): The n or number of observations is simply the number of responses to a given question. The n is important in determining the accuracy of a numeric estimate. In general, the larger the sample (n), the more accurate the estimate. Percentile: A number at or below which a specified percentage of the numbers in a batch fall. Percentile indicates the position of a case or value within a distribution, based on the number of cases with a lesser value. As an example, if there were 100 responses, the case reported at the 75th percentile would indicate that 75 out of 100 cases are below that case, and 25 cases are at or above that level.
