A JOB WITH REAL BITE P3

Bowled over by customer service P5

At a gala evening on Friday 2 May, Kennards Hire was named the Rental Company of the Year for 2014 by the Hire and Rental Industry Association. The Hire Industry Excellence Awards recognise outstanding achievement and industry excellence and pays tribute to the exceptional standards of service and innovation displayed throughout the hire sector. Allen Besseling, CEO of Kennards Hire, is incredibly proud of the Kennards Hire team. “We employ over 1000 people across Australia and New Zealand and we value the opinions and input of each and every one of those employees,” he said. “An award like this reflects the high standard and dedication to customer service that our staff set for themselves. I couldn’t be more proud of the entire team.” The Kennards Hire philosophy of ‘Taking Hire Higher’ has been inherent from the day the business started back in 1948. It’s about challenging industry convention, learning, improving, looking at the business from the customers’ perspective, innovation

and providing products and services that add value and benefit to customers. One way Kennards Hire achieves this is by a flat management structure. “This means every staff member at Kennards Hire is encouraged to actively participate in the company’s development,” said Allen. “They are also given the autonomy to make decisions that are in the best interest of the customer knowing they have the support of management.” The Kennards Hire network spans across Australia and New Zealand and maintains its focus on customer service and operational excellence, while the strong family values that they have become well-known for remain central to the company culture. To complement the general hire business, Kennards Hire has established a network of specialist branches around the country: Kennards Hire Lift & Shift, Kennards Hire Concrete Care, Kennards Hire Pump & Power, Kennards Hire Traffic, Kennards Hire Rail, and Kennards Hire Test & Measure. “In addition to our exceptional people, it is also our customers who have made Kennards Hire successful,” Allen said. “That’s why we continually strive to exceed their expectations and provide the equipment they need when they need it.”

A job with real

bite!

It takes a special kind of person to get into a pen with 350 crocodiles. But it’s all in a day’s work for the team at Crocodylus Park, just 15 minutes drive from the Darwin City Centre.

Park Foreman, John Pomeroy, explained the reason behind the need to step into this unusual work environment. “Crocodiles grow at very uneven rates,” he said. “They need to be kept in groups of the same size to prevent the larger ones dominating the smaller ones. “Every six months we empty the pens, measure the crocodiles and re-sort them into pens with animals of the same size.” Chris Kempton, Key Account Manager at Kennards Hire Darwin said, “We’ve worked with the team at Crocodylus Park on numerous occasions. For this project they used their own large pump to empty most of the water out of the pen. “When it reached a certain level, we provided two diesel powered Flexible Drive Pumps to empty the pens down to only 100mm of water. “This enabled the Crocodylus Park team to easily and safely handle, remove and relocate the crocodiles without causing them any stress.” The high performance diesel Flexible Drive Pump is quieter and offers a longer run time than the petrol units. They are also ideally suited for use during the monsoon season as the lack of spark plugs adds to their reliability. The pump is equipped with a 50mm delivery hose capable of transferring 64,000 litres per hour. The self-priming unit is easy to start and can handle solid material up to 28mm. In addition to being one of Darwin’s main tourist attractions, Crocodylus Park is also a world renowned research centre and breeding facility with over 10,000 commercially bred crocodiles. It’s also a zoo that features saltwater and freshwater crocodiles up to five metres as well as big cats, monkeys, birds, turtles and snakes. For a major development that was recently completed at the park, Kennards Hire supplied a bobcat, rollers and a range of sundry equipment. “With a park like ours there’s always maintenance and building projects being done,” John said. “Kennards Hire provides various equipment and offer helpful advice. They also arrange delivery to site when we need it, which adds to convenience. “We know the equipment from Kennards Hire is well maintained and Chris provides us with excellent customer service, which is very important,” he added.

setTING up shop in BrownS Plains, QLD

Kennards Hire has added another great outlet to their network. The new hire branch is located on the corner of Johnson Road and Southlink Street and provides customers with the tools and equipment they need in order to make their jobs easy. “The new branch is unique as it’s the first purpose-built green fields site established by Kennards Hire in Queensland,” explained Jamie Bach, Area Manager of Kennards Hire Browns Plains.

Jamie continued, saying that Kennards Hire has made a substantial investment in the new branch with over 95 per cent of the equipment purchased new from Kennards Hire’s preferred suppliers.

The 600 square metre branch is part of a 3000 square metre site that features a large car park and undercover area that enables customers to easily and safely load and unload equipment.

“This means when customers hire from our Browns Plains branch they won’t just receive a quality, reliable product, they’ll also leave with professional advice and the confidence to get the job done,” he added.

“We want to show our customers what the Kennards Hire ethos is all about,” Jamie said. “We pride ourselves on having a high level of expertise across the board and that’s one of the many reasons why customers choose Kennards Hire.”

The Browns Plains branch enables Kennards Hire to offer a greater level of service to the area and complements the branches at Rocklea, Springwood, Bundamba and Beenleigh. “Establishing the Browns Plains branch allows us to provide customers in the area and surrounding districts with faster delivery and a more convenient option,” said Jamie. “Additionally, the area to the south is expected to experience substantial growth across residential, commercial and industrial developments over the next decade.” As well as an extensive range of general hire equipment for trade and DIY customers, the Browns Plains branch houses some larger pieces of machinery. Kennards Hire Browns Plains is open Monday to Friday from 6:30am – 5:00pm and Saturday and Sunday from 7:00am – 4:00pm and can be contacted on (07) 3809 7800. “Being open seven days a week gives customers greater flexibility ordering, picking up and dropping off equipment or having it delivered to site,” Jamie added.

customer servicE Situated on the picturesque Mornington Peninsular southeast of Melbourne, with views overlooking the Bay, is the Mt Martha Bowls & Social Club. Like putting greens on a golf course, laying turf and achieving an almost carpet-like surface on a bowling green is a highly complex process. “When the bowling green required resurfacing, Kennards Hire Frankston provided a turf cutter to lift and remove the old turf,” explained Geoff Tozer, owner of Customized Garden Landscaping, which manages the turf and garden maintenance of the Mt Martha Bowls & Social Club.

equipment committed to another job site. So it was just a simple call to Kennards Hire Frankston, we told them what we needed and by when. “With all of about two hours notice we called and added a Bobcat to the order. They delivered everything including the Bobcat to site, which meant we didn’t lose any time,” Geoff said. “You can’t get better service than that.” Customized Garden Landscaping specialise in residential and commercial landscaping, garden design and maintenance as well as high-end turf

management for golf courses, bowls clubs and sporting fields. “One of the main reasons we like dealing with Kennards Hire is they really do make things easy. They understand our business and the importance of time. If one branch doesn’t have a piece of equipment they’ll get it from another branch and deliver it to site without hesitation. “This helps projects run more smoothly and why we continue to use Kennards Hire,” Geoff added.

In addition to the turf cutter, Kennards Hire Frankston also supplied a Vermeer Tracked Loader with a rotary hoe attachment used to fertilise, replenish and reinvigorate the soil, plus a second Vermeer Tracked Loader and a Bobcat used to clear debris and level the ground after the turf had been removed. A laser level was also used to achieve a +/- 2mm surface across the 1400 square metre bowling green. “We’ve been dealing with Kennards Hire for a number of years,” said Geoff. “One of the challenges on this project was logistics. We had a very short window to complete the project and had

LightING up

Adelaide

Fringe

The Adelaide Fringe is one of Australia’s largest openaccess arts festival events attracting performers and artists from around the world. The four week festival runs over February and March and features more than 900 acts and 4000 artists showcasing cabaret, comedy, circus, dance, film, theatre, puppetry, music, visual art and design.

One of the main highlights is the street parade, which marks the opening of the Adelaide Fringe.

they were so helpful we talked to them about providing a whole host of other equipment.”

Georgi Paech, Production Coordinator for the Adelaide Fringe explained the role Kennards Hire played in the parade. “In previous years the sound and lighting along the parade route was delivered using four large scaffold towers.

With the parade taking place at 8:30pm, it’s a light spectacular said Georgi. “Kennards Hire supplied 50 x 2 kVA generators with more than

“This year a sound engineer designed new sound plans using 9 x 9.7 metre scissor lifts. The scissor lifts were placed at various points along the western side of the parade route with sound and lighting equipment installed on them.” The scissor lifts were delivered to site with 6.5 kVA generators already placed in the basket by Kennards Hire to power the sound and lighting equipment. “Initially Kennards Hire were approached to supply just the scissor lifts,” said Georgi, “but

“This is the first year Kennards Hire has been involved with the Adelaide Fringe,” Georgi said. “Although we had some idea of what we needed the staff at Kennards Hire were really helpful suggesting the most suitable equipment, especially the model of scissor lift. “Sometimes our needs would change and they were very accommodating in meeting those changes. Kennards Hire were fantastic with delivering everything on time and picking equipment up the morning after the parade, which made coordinating logistics much easier.” Georgi was very pleased with the service and support she received saying, “Everyone from Kennards Hire was extremely helpful and offered great advice, I definitely want to use them again next year.”

Sometimes getting the right machinery on a site that’s not easy to access can be difficult. But when it’s an odd shaped cherry picker from Kennards Hire being lowered down a 10 metre deep manhole, difficult doesn’t seem so hard. Civil Construction Company Bellrise Investments P/L, were engaged to construct 28 manholes positioned at every change of direction along a 13 kilometre major sewer upgrade pipeline south of Brisbane. Brendan Seppanes from Bellrise Investments P/L explained, “The manhole where the cherry picker was used had an unusual shape. It was at a junction of four interconnecting pipelines all at different heights, 10 metres in depth and five metres in diameter at the base.” The shaft also featured three flat surface walls. As methane gas can erode concrete over time, a HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) liner had to be placed over the concrete walls and the joins sealed with an extrusion welder. After consulting with Kennards Hire and the machine manufacturer about the ideal lifting points, a spreader and tag lines were used to lower the cherry picker safely into the access shaft. “Another consideration was the unit needed to be electric as it was being used in a confined space and therefore produce no emissions,” said Brendan. “The outrigger of the cherry picker provided stability as the work crew welded the liner,” he added. The basket rotator and fly boom provides extra reach and flexibility to the work platform, while controls can be operated from the ground or in the basket. Bellrise Investments is a civil construction company that specialise in the construction of large diameter pipelines, pump stations, treatment plant upgrades, concrete works and bulk earthworks. “Dealing with Kennards Hire is so easy,” said Brendan. “They always get equipment to site quickly, they offer helpful advice when we need it and that sort of service really adds to a project running smoothly.”

Magnetic Island event attracts Kennards Hire equipment

The Magnetic Island Adventurethon is a multi-sport challenge that traverses from one side of the Island to the other. It incorporates a 26km kayak paddle, 29kms of mountain biking and a 22km off road (or trail) run throughout areas such as national parklands, beaches and hiking trails. This terrain not only adds to the difficulty but also allows participants to enjoy spectacular scenery. Kennards Hire Townsville sponsored the weekend event which saw 307 participants put their bodies through the gruelling course as they were cheered on by several thousand onlookers.

“Working with the team at Kennards Hire was really easy,” said Joel. They offered great advice on the equipment needed and were keen to help whenever needed.”

Event Organiser, Joel Savage said, “Kennards Hire Townsville was very enthusiastic about becoming involved in the event.

Adventure racing is becoming increasingly popular. Adventurethon events are run in Townsville, Coffs Harbour on the NSW Mid North Coast as well as Albany and Kalbarri in WA.

“They donated a 2kVA Honda generator with a running time of eight hours, floodlights for working at night setting up, two portable toilets and 29 barriers, which were utilised around the finish line.“ In addition to the equipment donated by Kennards Hire Townsville, as a sponsor they gave the organisers 400 flyers. These were placed in show bags handed to competitors and spectators and comprised of a $20.00 discount voucher, which could be used for any hire. “Magnetic Island is about a 30 minute ferry ride from the mainland so all equipment had to be sent over by barge,” explained Joel. “Kennards Hire provided a complete package solution that was picked up and taken to the island by a local transport freight company.

8

Wes Daffy Assistant Manager at Kennards Hire Townsville said, “it’s a great local event and we were very keen to be a part of it. We look forward to being even more involved next year.” Kennards Hire Townsville covers a vast area, as far up as Cairns, down to Mackay and west to the mines in Mount Isa. The branch also incorporates Kennards Hire Lift & Shift and Kennards Hire Pump & Power. The branch has an extensive range of equipment including hydro excavation units, both trailer and truck mounted. Kennards Hire Townsville have a large range of equipment for the concreting industry plus traffic equipment such as light towers, a fleet of message boards and traffic lights used for infrastructure projects.

Raising the

Roof Renowned for its restaurants and cafes, the inner city suburb of Brunswick is one of the oldest in Melbourne. When it came to renewing the steel deck roofing on a 1960s vintage block of flats, Rob Cook, Director at Shamrock Roofing Company, hired one of the new Skyjack 32’ All Terrain Scissor Lifts from Kennards Hire. With a working height of 11.6m (38’), a powerful diesel engine and a working platform of 1.4m wide x 2.4m long, plus a 1.5m extending deck, this machine exceeds all requirements for the most popular scissor lift in the Kennards Hire fleet. “In addition to removing the roof, replacing the battens, installing new insulation and the new roof, we had to work in conjunction with contractors connecting the NBN cabling,” explained Rob. “So it wasn’t as straightforward as other projects,” he added. Shamrock Roofing Company specialise in re-roofing, in particular older buildings, houses and residential unit blocks. “We use scissor lifts from Kennards Hire regularly,” said Rob. “They’re easy to manoeuvre, particularly down narrow paths between buildings and it also means we don’t have to have a crane constantly on site.” The new Skyjack 32’ All Terrain Scissor Lifts feature self-levelling outriggers, have a 465 kilogram SWL and a 240 volt power supply so operators can use power tools. With non-marking tyres they are suitable for internal use in areas with good ventilation, making them ideal for indoor sports centres with

wooden floors, exhibition centres and buildings with high ceilings. In addition to the new Skyjack 32’ All Terrain Scissor Lifts, Kennards Hire have an extensive fleet of boom lifts, which range from 30’ electric narrow (1200 wide), up to straight booms reaching 21.5 metres.

“Shamrock Roofing Company work on projects throughout Melbourne,” said Rob. “Convenience and customer service is why we use Kennards Hire. With one phone call everything we need is sent to site in one delivery no matter where we’re working.”

KENNARDS HIRE CONCRETE CARE

Andy s Kitchen Rules ’

Creating a polished concrete kitchen bench at a house on Dangar Island at Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River north of Sydney, had many challenges for home renovator Andy Varnam. Working with the team at Kennards Hire Concrete Care Artarmon, they were all overcome. After finding a design to complement the style of the renovations, Andy researched techniques for building the 3.0m long x 1.0m wide x 900mm high island bench. With approximately five tonnes of concrete and several tonnes of reinforcing steel, he also had to strengthen the piers, joists and bearers to support the massive weight.

renovation projects including; kitchen and bathroom renovations, decking and outdoor BBQ installation and house painting.

Through his business Andy has hired a range of equipment from various Kennards Hire branches.

“Branch manager Mirsad Halsep gave me his mobile number to call for any after hours help. That sort of customer service is unheard of anywhere,” he said. Andy owns and operates A-Z Home Maintenance, which undertakes all types of maintenance and

“This is the first time I’ve dealt with Kennards Hire Concrete Care,” he said, adding, “without them I don’t think I could have done the job right.”

When the formwork was removed Andy took photos to the Kennards Hire Concrete Care branch at Artarmon and showed them what he built. “They were really impressed and offered to help wherever they could to ensure I achieved the best finish possible,” Andy said. Once the concrete had cured, the next stage was to hone and grind the surface. “The customer service was exceptional. The team at Kennards Hire Concrete Care didn’t just supply equipment, they also provided invaluable advice on how to properly diamond grind and prepare then polish, coat and seal the concrete.”

The

Shed of

Straw Famous for being the Country Music Capital of Australia, Tamworth is also the regional hub of the New England area in north-west NSW. While building a shed on a property in a regional area is not uncommon, what makes this shed unique is the choice of building material used by owner Peter Sharpe. “The 9 x 12 metre shed consists of a steel frame while the walls are constructed from straw bales,” explained Peter. “It’s essentially a practice run as we’ll live in the shed while building the main house, which will also be built out of straw bales.” The bales are laid in a running bond pattern, the same as brickwork and secured with tensioned wire to hold them in place. The bales then receive three coats of rendering comprising of sand, lime and concrete mix. The first render is a hard coat, the second uses a medium grade sand, or sharp sand and the third soft coat uses river sand, which can handle temperature changes. It also seals the

bales from the elements but also allows them to be vapour permeable. To render the walls Peter hired a Diesel grout mixer pump with mortar gun from Kennards Hire Concrete Care Artarmon. “Tamworth doesn’t have a Kennards Hire branch. We tried to source a machine locally but there was nothing available that could do the job, even from other hire companies.” Peter then contacted Konrad Stempniak, National Product Manager at Kennards Hire Concrete Care and after discussing the project was able to secure the ideal machine. To ensure the optimum result Konrad tested several mortar mixes and aggregate and advised Peter of the most suitable. Peter then made the long six hour journey from Tamworth to Sydney to pick up the machine and

was very impressed with the customer service he received saying, “Aaron Willing from Kennards Hire Concrete Care demonstrated how to operate the mixer pump and mortar gun which was invaluable. It was worth the trip, we couldn’t have completed the job without it.” “To return the equipment Kennards arranged for someone to meet my wife half way at a Caltex service station so she didn’t have to drive all the way to Sydney. As a customer that level of service is really appreciated,” he said. Kennards Hire Concrete Care carries a range of spraying nozzles and guns suitable for use with the grout mixer pump large diesel, grout mixer pump large 415v and continuous mixer pumps in 415v for spraying mortars, renders and concrete repair materials.

cutting, horizontal and vertical cutting as well as cutting heavy reinforced concrete and concrete blocks – reinforced and core filled. “The K6500HF is well-suited to trade professionals and people working in a broad range of industry sectors such as utility services, remedial, confined space and residential and commercial construction,” added Rob. In addition to the K6500HF, Kennards Hire Concrete Care has a broad range of equipment including grinders, concrete mowers, chain saws and demolition saws as well as ride-on scrubbers and sweepers.

Rising from the ashes

KENNARDS HIRE PUMP & POWER

Set on the famous St Kilda beach and with stunning panoramic views of Port Phillip Bay, The Stokehouse Restaurant is a Melbourne icon renowned for its upstairs fine dining restaurant and downstairs cafe.

On Friday night, 17 January this year, an intense fire ripped through and devastated the heritage building, which then later had to be demolished. The site was soon cleared and in its place a luxurious temporary marquee was erected, so it was business as usual and the many weddings and event bookings were all able to proceed. To power the new Pop-Up venue Kennards Hire Pump & Power Springvale supplied commercial

and industrial electrical company AMRE Electrical Services with a silenced 250kVA generator. “AMRE Electrical Services are contracted by restaurant owners The Van Haandel Group, which owns several other restaurants in Melbourne, to complete all the maintenance electrical works,” explained AMRE Electrical Services Director, Tony Jones.

The load bank was used at an elevator shaft where rock is pulled up from underground. When the elevator descends it produces a negative current. The load bank absorbs the extra current and prevents the generator from overloading and blowing out or damaging a driveshaft. To meet an increase in demand for load banks, Kennards Hire Pump & Power has expanded its fleet of 100, 200 and 600 kilowatt load bank units. Customers can now enjoy the benefits of smaller 100kw units, enabling easy access into lifts, basements and limited access areas. The units can be linked together to form larger capacities for load testing and load proving

“We called Carl Klix at Kennards Hire Pump & Power Springvale who met us on site and we discussed our needs to get the restaurant up and running again,” said Tony. “The next day the 250kVA generator, leads, temporary power boxes and switchboards were delivered to the site. You can’t get any better than next day service.” The 250kVA generator was used to power the entire site including the kitchen, cool room and freezer, lighting and air conditioning.

“Dealing with Kennards Hire Pump & Power is easy. They’re very helpful and put together a complete package of equipment required...” a complete package of equipment required,” Tony said. “From a business, administration and logistics perspective, it makes a job run much more smoothly and that’s why we use Kennards Hire.”

Tony said that due to a lack of space having an additional fuel cell to power the generator for longer periods was not possible. “Carl arranged for a tanker to fill the generator each morning. Without power there was no restaurant so this seven day service was invaluable,” he said. The temporary structure will sit on the original site until 11 May. It will then relocate to Melbourne’s CBD whilst the new Stokehouse Restaurant is being rebuilt on the St Kilda site. “Dealing with Kennards Hire Pump & Power is easy. The 600kw units can be mounted onto a forklift base for ease of transport and can even be mounted on a trailer to allow customers the freedom to deliver and work to their own time schedule, as well as the saving on transport expenses. In addition to load banks, Kennards Hire Pump & Power has an extensive range of generators, which vary from small portable 2kVA units to the 14 tonne, 1250kVA units that generate an incredible 1000Kw of power. There is also an extensive range of pumps available in varying sizes.

Bridging the Gap

Opened to traffic in 1965 and with the main arch spanning approximately 90 metres, the Tarban Creek Bridge is another iconic structure on Sydney’s waterways. The Tarban Creek Bridge Rehabilitation is a project to complete repairs and maintenance to cross girders and bearings located at the bridge half joints. Kennards Hire Pump & Power provided contractors Brady Marine and Civil with a 3-phase, 20kVA generator together with a 2000 litre fuel cell and a 25 tonne porta power used for jacking across a pile.

“The scope of works includes building eight, 1500mm diameter piles and four semisubmerged pile caps, one on each corner of the bridge,” said Chris Bourke, Project Engineer at Brady Marine and Civil.

14

“Once complete, piers and a cross beam joint are placed on the pile caps to support a joint under the bridge.” Working on the water presents many challenges says Chris. All the equipment including a 160 tonne crane sits on a barge. The 20kVA generator runs the pump, various power tools and crib room. The RCD on the 20kVA generator kept tripping power, resulting in earth leakage. Instead of replacing the unit, which would have been a huge task removing it from the barge, David Matika from Kennards Hire Pump & Power, a qualified electrical fitter, repaired the unit by replacing the 20kVA Generator’s components and restoring power on the barge, minimising downtime. “The quick response from Kennards Hire Pump & Power meant work could continue with virtually no disruption,” said Chris. “Additionally having the 2000 litre fuel cell

added to efficiency. The crane uses a lot of fuel, with the cell on the barge it can operate for longer periods than if we had to call a fuel truck each day.” Kennards Hire Pump & Power also supplied a submersible 3” sludge pump. “The pump is placed at the bottom of the drill site and used to extract water from the piles,” Chris explained. “This allows the geo-technical engineers to inspect the rock beneath the steel casing before the reinforcing steel is placed and they’re filled with concrete.” Brady Marine and Civil specialise in the construction of wharves, jetties, offshore pipelines, bridges over water and other marine based structures. “We have worked with Kennards Hire on a number of projects. They have always offered great service and advice,” he added.

KENNARDS HIRE TRAFFIC

Sending a

message

In an effort to curb alcohol-fuelled violence, the NSW government introduced new one punch laws on 31 January, 2014.

To advise club patrons, party-goers and revellers of the one punch rule, Kennards Hire Traffic supplied four VMS boards to the City of Sydney and six VMS boards to the Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing. The VMS boards were used to tell people about the new 1.30am lock-outs to pubs, bars and night clubs, 3:00am last drinks, associated fines for not leaving when asked as well as transport information to get home safely after a night on the town. The VMS boards were placed in various popular night spots throughout Sydney CBD, including Hyde Park, Circular Quay, Kings Cross, Town Hall and Taylor Square for five weeks of the information campaign. Kennards Hire Traffic delivery drivers were required to contact a Control Room prior to setting up to ensure the VMS boards were not obstructing CCTV cameras in the area. The VMS boards are solar powered and also feature a battery back-up system. Adding to convenience and efficiency, messages can be changed remotely when needed. Kennards Hire Traffic has an extensive range of equipment, which includes Truck Mounted Attenuators, Balloon Lights, VMS, Road Plates and Barriers.

KENNARDS HIRE TEST & MEASURE

A plumbing emergency In the emergency ward of a newly built hospital the cause of a water leak was becoming increasingly difficult to find. That’s when specialist plumbing maintenance company Aussie Plumbers enlisted the help of equipment from Kennards Hire Test & Measure. “It was like looking for a needle in a haystack,” said Matt Harriden, Director of Aussie Plumbers, “So we hired a range of equipment from Leo de Sousa at Kennards Hire Test & Measure, including a thermal imager to locate the source of the leak. “It turned out that a picture hook had pieced a pipe in the wall 25 metres from where the leak was noticed.” Aussie Plumbers is a maintenance and service company with a scope of works that spans from domestic homes through to commercial buildings including schools, hospitals and aged care facilities.

“For our business hiring specialised equipment from Kennards Hire Test & Measure enables us to expand our service offering to customers, add to efficiency and cost-effectiveness,” said Matt. “It also means we don’t have to outlay several thousand dollars on equipment we may only use once or twice a year, from a business perspective that really helps with cash flow management.

All equipment is tagged with a QR code, which provides via smartphone app, tablet or desktop computer instant access to service history and operator manual for that specific piece of equipment.

“Hiring also provides an opportunity to try various pieces of equipment that’s used on a regular basis before buying it,” he added.

“He takes the time to demonstrate how to set up and operate equipment correctly, which means we don’t have to spend time reading manuals, so when we get on site we’re confident how to use the equipment and the readings are accurate. It’s just great customer service,” said Matt.

The equipment available from Kennards Hire Test & Measure ranges from hydrostatic test pumps, power loggers, anchor testers and noninvasive smoke machines to an extensive array of hand-held devices.

“Dealing with Leo de Sousa at Kennards Hire Test & Measure, who has extensive knowledge on the equipment is invaluable.

A Balance

of PoweR

When Adelaide based specialist electrical business Prologic Group were engaged to investigate why electrical fuses were constantly being blown at a local school, they hired a 3-phase power logger from Kennards Hire Test & Measure. “We needed to ascertain if the 3-phase power feeding into the school was correctly balanced,” said Nic Bruce, Director at Prologic Group. “For instance, if the power feed over 3-phases was 200amps per phase and one was only drawing 100amps and the others close to 200amps, then this imbalance can cause fuses to trip,” explained Nic. “By hiring the power logger from Kennards Hire Test & Measure we were able to accurately analyse the power feed and determine if adjustments were required. Once we have the data it’s a simple process to reconfigure the individual power boards and ensure they are correctly balanced.” Having power that is balanced optimises running electrical devices such as air conditioning units and computer rooms. It also enables schools, homes and businesses to add electrical items without drawing additional power or overloading the system. “Michael Hein from Kennards Hire Test & Measure was great to deal with and he provided excellent service,” said Nic. “We hadn’t used a 3-phase power logger before so Michael set up the equipment and talked us through the logging process. The business also offers Renewable Solar Energy Systems domestically, commercially and as an offset alternative. “The availability of testing equipment from Kennards Hire Test & Measure has benefited our business. Being able to hire testing equipment rather than buy and have the ongoing maintenance and calibration costs has enabled us to expand and take on more work across a broader range of areas,” Nic said. The equipment available from Kennards Hire Test & Measure incorporates power loggers, cable analysers, hydrostatic test pumps, anchor testers and non-invasive smoke machines plus an extensive array of hand-held devices. Much of the equipment is also calibrated to NATA specifications.

KENNARDS HIRE LIFT & SHIFT

helpING roll out Kennards Hire Lift & Shift has added a fleet of trailer mounted capstan winches to its extensive range of cable pulling equipment.

the NBN

These capstan winches as well as jinka trailers are being used by technology company Casatel for the installation of cabling for the National Broadband Network in QLD and VIC. “The jinka trailers from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift offer greater flexibility and are more manoeuvrable than truck mounted A-frames,” explained Danny Appleton, QLD Senior Operations Manager at Casatel. “They’re also more efficient and less labour intensive.” “Every person who uses the equipment is required to have VoC – Verification of Competency,” said Danny. “Dave Fellows from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift is able to fully demonstrate and provide certification for the use of the equipment.” Casatel is also utilising the 2kN Optic Fibre capstan winches from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift. These winches have been built to Telstra specified certification for laying optic fibre cabling for the National Broadband Network. “The winches are set up at various points, usually 500 metres apart, and used to haul 2.5 kilometres of cabling down the line,” said Danny.

“The main benefit of using the winches is you’re able to complete longer cable runs in a much shorter time. It’s also far less labour intensive as you don’t have to pull the cables by hand as much.” The winches are equipped with an inline restrictor lock function to prevent the optic fibre cabling from being pulled at a force greater than 200kg. All units have been fitted with safety cages, magnetised plates for the addition of flashing lights and insulation material around exhausts. A platform has been placed over the A-frame drawbar of the trailers, allowing front entry to the winch control panel, which is also surrounded by a guardrail.

The operator controlled capstan has forward/ reverse rotation, which is controlled via either the dash mounted joystick or remote control foot treadle. This allows the unit to be operated by one person, minimising labour costs and adding to efficiency. “There’s never any issue dealing with the team from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift. They all know the equipment, help wherever possible and responsive to our needs,” said Danny. “That makes my job much easier.” Kennards Hire Lift & Shift has an extensive range of cable winches, hauling jacks and accessories at their hire centres in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Townsville.

“Dave Fellows from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift is able to fully demonstrate and provide certification for the use of the equipment.”

A Hard GrinD

Starting a small business comes with many challenges. For business owners Tracy Facer and Robert Alloway, one of the biggest challenges was under their feet. “The large 350 square metre warehouse used to be a smash repair business and the concrete floor was heavily coated in oil and paint that had accumulated over the years,” said Tracy. “We wanted to achieve a polished concrete finish. After water blasting the area we realised the only way to clean the floor would be with a concrete grinder. That’s where Kennards Hire Concrete Care came in.” Located at 15 Eden Street, Newmarket, a retail hub of Central Auckland, the warehouse has since been converted into ‘Carbon Garage’, a cafe with a dine-in area, which serves coffee and a range of freshly baked pastries. The rear two thirds of the building features an automotive workshop and service centre for Japanese Superbikes.

“Having a grinder that worked properly and was easy to use made such a difference in time and was virtually dustfree,” Tracy said. Tracy was also pleased with the high level of service she and Robert received saying, “The customer service in the branch was great and having the grinder picked-up by Kennards Hire added to the convenience. With a branch located in East Tamaki, we would definitely call them for any future hires.” www.facebook.com/ carbongaragenewmarket

“Our first attempt at grinding the floor was disastrous,” said Tracy. “We hired a concrete grinder from another hire company. It was loud and didn’t create a seal with the floor and kicked up so much dust it was like a sandstorm.” “After we returned the grinder, we then went to Kennards Hire in East Tamaki and spoke to Jesse Jenkinson. He was great, explaining how to use the machine, he gave us different quick change diamond grinding consumables. The initial diamond disc was a coarse grade to prepare the surface, with the second being a finer diamond disc to smooth and finish the floor area. He even included extra dust bags.” Kennards Hire Concrete Care supplied Tracy and Robert with a powerful Grinder single Head H/Duty 240v and vacuum industrial medium.

“The customer service in the branch was great and having the grinder picked-up by Kennards Hire added to the convenience. With a branch located in East Tamaki, we would definitely call them for any future hires.” 19
