Your Legacy, Our Mission Dear friend, On a perfect sunny Saturday in September, 25,000 Seattleites ran, danced, sailed, paddled, picnicked, and applauded the opening of Lake Union Park. This extraordinary transformation of green space and waterfront in the heart of our city is gracefully designed to honor a richly layered history and embrace a dynamic future. The park reveals Seattle at its best; it is a testament to how much is possible when the city pulls together. Our community created a great park with the same vision, energy and generosity that has guided and inspired Seattle Parks Foundation over the last ten years. It is your enthusiastic support – as voters, partners, advocates, volunteers, and donors – that enabled us to enhance and create parks, playgrounds, and green space in neighborhoods across the city. Together we have accomplished so much. We see what is possible. And we are just beginning. Looking forward, Seattle Parks Foundation will work with you to ensure that every citizen has easy access to safe and beautiful parks. We will partner with others to build vital new public spaces on the central waterfront. We will champion and help build green connections between our parks, including a trail that will someday connect Lake Union, Seattle Center, the Olympic Sculpture Park, and the central waterfront. And we will stand with you as advocates for new public and private sector resources that will guarantee our parks – so critical to our shared civic and cultural life – are well cared for. Your leadership, passion, and generosity are transforming Seattle and enriching the lives of everyone who lives and visits here.

Saturday, September 25, 2010 Lake Union Park welcomed nearly 25,000 people to celebrate the largest opening of a public park in Seattle’s history! With music and dancing on two stages, a farmer’s market, a family fun run, paddle boarding and kayak demonstrations, an outdoor fitness field, and a parade of Seattle mascots, the longawaited grand opening of Lake Union Park offered something to please everyone at the free, day-long community festival. The model boat pond hosted races and demonstrations of both radio-controlled and hand-launched model boats, children cavorted in the fountains, and the lake was crisscrossed by boat tours, native canoes, dragon boats, and sailboats! At the ribbon-cutting, donors, Seattle Parks Foundation board members, project partners and elected officials recognized the remarkable achievements of the Foundation in bringing its first major park project, Lake Union Park, to fruition. Seattle Parks Foundation was honored this year to be a recipient of the 2010 Downtown Champion Award for our leadership and vision in making Lake Union Park a reality, and in the process, fostering community and a vibrant recreation hub for South Lake Union neighbors, the city and the region.

“We believe Lake Union Park will become one of the most popular parks in the state. It has everything -- water, a historic armory, places to play, boats, and a 6.2 mile loop that joins the whole lake to the park.” - Doug Walker Seattle Parks Foundation Board member and co-chair of Lake Union Park Campaign Pathways

NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS It was a year of great achievement for neighborhood parks. For three years, Seattle Parks Foundation worked with the Wallingford community, Friends of Waterway 18, and Washington State Department of Natural Resources to design, permit, and fund the restoration of an underutilized waterway on north Lake Union. In June dozens of partners came together to dedicate Waterway 18, now a renovated beach with restored habitat along the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop. After five years of collaborating with West Seattle residents, the West Seattle Junction Association, and Seattle Parks and Recreation (Parks), we celebrated the grand opening of Junction Plaza Park in June. Located in the heart of the West Seattle Junction, this pocket park is a much-needed gathering place in a rapidly-developing neighborhood. In South Seattle, we helped complete the transfer of four parcels of land near the headwaters of Taylor Creek to Parks, preserving 0.5 acres of critical salmon-spawning habitat. Our fiscal sponsorship projects also made strides this year. Seward Park Playground Improvement Foundation developed a naturalistic play area adjoining old growth forest, where kids of all ages can explore the natural beauty of the Northwest. Concord Elementary School PTA converted an underutilized outdoor area into a recreational center with a new playground layout and equipment. And Friends of Jackson Park Trail completed the design of a new four-mile loop surrounding the 200-acre Jackson Park Golf Course. Jackson Park is one of the few major open spaces in the north end, and the new trail will enable more residents to experience this nearby gem.

“It was important to us that Waterway 18 be restored for people and aquatic life. We hope this will be a positive model to other waterfront landowners of how we all can be better stewards of our city’s shorelines.” - Lisa Carroll, Friends of Waterway 18

GREEN CONNECTIONS Seattle Parks Foundation continues to be the chief advocate for the implementation of Bands of Green report recommendations – trails and linear parks connecting neighborhoods and green space throughout our city. By working with city agencies and community partners, we are providing beautiful and safe transportation routes reminiscent of the original Olmsted Plan. In partnership with public and private stakeholders, we are moving forward the Lake to Bay Loop, a new 3.5-mile pedestrian path establishing a green connection between Lake Union and Elliott Bay. Design of the Loop is hoped to be complete in spring 2011. The Thomas Street Pedestrian Overpass – a critical link in the route – has been fully funded and construction will start in 2011. We also continued our work with the city to oversee implementation of the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop, and helped leverage an additional $500,000 in public funds for implementation of priority projects on the route in 2010. We are also updating the Bands of Green report to incorporate a number of recently completed plans, such as the Complete Streets, and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plans. The effort will document progress made on the plan’s recommendations, prioritize remaining opportunities, and identify the next steps and partnerships needed to move key projects forward.

“The Lake to Bay Loop offers an outstanding opportunity to enhance the livability of our city and the health of our residents by improving the connections between Lake Union and the downtown waterfront.” - Sally Bagshaw Seattle City Councilmember, Parks and Seattle Center Committee Chair

PARKS ADVOCACY Seattle Parks Foundation is committed to creating great Seattle parks, and one of our best tools for doing this is advocacy for parks funding. Seattle Parks and Recreation (Parks), like most government agencies, faces deep budget cuts in this down economy. But even in good times, Seattle’s parks lack a consistent, sustainable funding source to pay for longterm operations, maintenance, rehabilitation, and repair. Seattle Parks Foundation is leading the effort to ensure adequate funding for Seattle’s park system now and in the future. We are working to protect Parks from disproportionate cuts in the current budget cycle, and partnering with city leaders and community partners to move forward high priority projects, like the Lake to Bay Loop. Looking ahead, we are spearheading a collaborative Parks Funding Study effort with other nonprofit agencies to identify long-term funding solutions, helping to ensure the health of Seattle’s parks for generations to come. As Seattle plans the removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, the Parks Foundation is playing a lead role advocating for the inclusion of accessible, public green space along the Central Waterfront and reconnecting downtown to Elliott Bay. In September, we sponsored a presentation at Benaroya Hall to foster public engagement in the waterfront’s design. More than 1,200 citizens heard the four short-listed design teams present their background and approach to the project. Known for innovative thinking and such projects as New York City’s Highline Park, the award-winning james corner field operations was selected to serve as lead designer for Seattle’s new Central Waterfront, and will deliver a conceptual design by 2012.

“In this time of economic adversity, we need great city parks to keep the hearts of our communities beating. These are the publicly available places city dwellers can go to enjoy the outdoors, stay in shape, and recharge their souls.”

1st ANNUAL GREEN TIE GALA - (photo credits: left and bottom right, by Kip Beelman; top right, by Jenny Jimenez)

NEW WAYS TO GIVE Donor support has always been at the heart of our work, and this year our supporters chose innovative ways to contribute to parks. On September 24, Seattle Parks Foundation’s first annual Green Tie Gala fundraiser rocked Lake Union Park! The party took place the night before the park’s public grand opening in a tent decorated as wooded parkland. This event welcomed more than 350 guests who toasted to the success of Seattle Parks Foundation’s first nine years. Mark your calendars and plan to join us next year for the second annual Green Tie Gala on September 16, 2011! Donors also contributed directly to their favorite parks through our Bench, Tree, and Yellow Swing Donation Program. This year 20 benches, 8 new trees, and 8 ADA-accessible yellow swings were funded by donors, and an additional 9 mature trees were “adopted” through our Adopt-a-Tree Program. These equipment and tree donations directly improve our parks by providing places for rest, adding beauty, and increasing accessibility for children. And through these gifts, donors have the chance to leave a lasting legacy. Also in 2010, Seattle Parks Foundation launched the Stimson Bullitt Giving Circle, a planned giving program named in honor of a lifelong Seattle resident, outdoorsman, and Downtown Seattle visionary. When he passed away in 2009, Stim included Seattle Parks Foundation in his will, and the Stimson Bullitt Giving Circle now has several members. Consider including a bequest to Seattle Parks Foundation in your plans and joining the Stimson Bullitt Giving Circle – an intimate group of people who believe, as Stim did, that parks help build strong communities.
