Community Circle Theatre’s Magic Circle presents

A Sleeping Beauty (Somewhere in Time) Community Leadership Contest 2014 Community Circle Theatre, with support from Peter M. Wege & the Wege Foundation, is holding a contest for students ages 8-14 years old in conjunction with the 2014 Magic Circle Production of A Sleeping Beauty (Somewhere in Time). In an effort to raise awareness about how young people can better their community through civic service and leadership, we want to know how each and every one can contribute to being a community Leader.

The Contest:

The Contest requirements are as follows • Child participating must be in one of the following age groups: 8-9, 10-12 or 13-14 • Child must complete (w/help of parent or guardian) registration form, which includes parent or guardian’s consent. • Child must sign pledge agreeing to become an advocate for leadership in their community • Child must submit a 5 x 7 picture of himself/herself. • Child must select TWO essay questions from list and submit answers about Community Leadership: o Children ages 8-9 must submit a 70 word minimum response to each question o Children ages 10-12 must submit a 100 word minimum response to each question o Children ages 13-14 must submit a 130 word minimum response to each question. • All submissions must be post marked by June 13, 2014

Answer the questions or discuss the topics to the best of your ability. 8-9 years old must submit a minimum 70 word response to each topic. 10-12 years old must submit a minimum 100 word response to each topic. 13-14 years old must submit a minimum 130 word response to each topic. 1. What does volunteering mean to you? Ideas to consider: • How can you give back to your community? • Think of some kind of volunteer work you might like to do. • Describe it and tell why you think you would like it. • Who would it help and in what way? 2. What do you think a good citizen is? Ideas to consider: • In what ways are you a good citizen-give some examples • What is a bad citizen? • What does good citizenship have to do with community service? • What things could you do to be a better citizen? 3. Write about someone you consider to be a hero: Ideas to consider: • What is the main reason you think this person is a hero? • What are some other good things about this hero? • What qualities do you admire in this person? • What obstacles did he/she overcome? Do you agree that kids have no power? Why or why not? 5. What makes your neighborhood or community a nice place to live? What could you do to make your neighborhood or community a better place? 6. Identify a problem in your community that needs to be fixed. Ideas to consider: • What is the problem? • Why is it a problem? (what bad things happen because of this problem) • What needs to be done to fix the problem? • Whose responsibility is it to fix the problem? • What good will come of fixing the problem 7. From a newspaper, magazine, TV show or movie, find an example of someone demonstrating good citizenship.
