Community High School ESL Bilingual Program

every day we own our voice and work together to prepare all for success beyond our high school experience.

The ESL/ Bilingual Education program is designed for students whose primary language is one other than English. The goal of the program is to provide students with sufficient English skills to facilitate movement into the mainstream and be able to function in a competitive academic environment.

Placement in the specific courses is based upon the recommendations of the ESL Director, the counselor, teachers staff, and ACCESS tests. The ESL class sequence follows the Illinois WIDA Standards for English Proficiency.

El programa de Educación bilingüe está diseñado para estudiantes quienes el idioma primario sea otro que el inglés. La meta del programa es para proveer a los estudiantes suficientes habilidades en inglés para facilitar el traslado a las clases regulares y funcionar en un ambiente competitivo y académico. La secuencia de las clases de ESL siguen los estándares de WIDA de Competencia en Ingles en el estado de Illinois.

La colocación en los siguientes cursos está basada en las recomendaciones del Director de ESL , el consejero, los maestros, y los exámenes ACCESS.

English as a Second Language (ESL) 1 & 2 A

ACCESS Literacy Score 1- 2.7 These courses helps students with a very limited knowledge of English to communicate proficiently in everyday situations while introducing reading and writing skills essential for their academic and professional success. This class has two parts. The Language Enrichment part provides additional opportunities to expand on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The materials and curriculum are designed to complement the main section of ESL. Part 1 meets the school’s English requirement for graduation. Part 2 provides an opportunity to earn elective credit. ACCESS Literacy Scores 2.8-3.4 The third level ESL language course continues to develop the skills necessary to locate, understand and interpret information in literature, social studies, science and other informational text. At the end of the course, students will be able to compose an essay with valid reasoning and relevant evidence, using correct rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation. This class has two parts. The Language Enrichment part provides additional opportunities to expand on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, through cooperative collaboration. The materials and curriculum are designed to complement the main section of ESL. Part 1 meets the school’s English requirement for graduation. Part 2 provides an opportunity to earn elective credit. La clase del tercer nivel de inglés como Segundo Idioma continúa en desarrollar las habilidades necesarias para localizar, comprender, e interpretar la información en la literatura, los estudios sociales, las ciencias y otros textos informativos. Al final del curso, los estudiantes serán capaces de componer un ensayo razonando ideas críticamente usando reglas correctas de la gramática, la ortografía y la puntuación. Esta clase tiene dos partes. La parte del Enriquecimiento del idioma proporciona las oportunidades adicionales para ampliar las habilidades en la lectura, la escritura, el habla y la audición por colaboración cooperativa. ACCESS Literacy Scores 3.5-3.8 The fourth level ESL language course will provide students with the skills to locate, understand and interpret information in literature, social studies, science and other informational text. Students will also be able to write a composition in each of the following modes: narration, description, exposition, argument and persuasion. This class has two parts. The Language Enrichment part provides additional opportunities to expand on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, through cooperative collaboration. The materials and curriculum are designed to complement the main section of ESL. Part 1 meets the school’s English requirement for graduation. Part 2 provides an opportunity to earn elective credit.

ACCESS Literacy Scores 3.9-4.2

The fifth level ESL language course continues to develop the skills necessary to locate, understand and interpret information in literature, social studies, science and other informational text. In addition, this course provides students with the study strategies and writing practice they need to be successful in mainstream classes.

The ACCESS test for ELL’s measures English language proficiency in content areas: math, science, and social studies.

ACCESS for English Language Learners (ELL) is given in January and February.

 Students will take an individual oral test.

 Students will also take a

listening, reading and writing test in a large group.

 Based on these tests, in May , students will receive their ACCESS Literacy and Composite scores.

 Students will be placed into

their Community High school classes based on these scores.

ACCESS Standards ESL Program eligibility and placement is based on English literacy (reading/writing) and composite scores of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

Literacy Scores 1.0 - 4.2 (Reading and Writing) ESL 1 = Literacy 1.0 -1.6

ESL 2 = Literacy 1.7 -2.7 ESL 3 = Literacy 2.8-3.4 ESL 4 = Literacy 3.5- 3.8 ESL 5 Bridge = Literacy 3.9 -4.2

Composite Scores 1.0 - 5.0 (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing)

ACCESS Accountability ESL students have Literacy (Reading & Writing) score of 1.0- 4.2. along with a Composite scores from 1.0 to 5.0 A student scoring higher will be placed in a mainstream class.

ACCESS Accountability A student must score a Reading AND Writing level of 4.2 AND a Composite of 5.0 to be exited to mainstream classes at Community High School.
