Brimbank children are safe and thriving in healthy families and participating in a vibrant, diverse and welcoming community. Priority areas 







Families have strong relationships. Brimbank families are supported in their parenting role to grow and respond to their child’s development. Brimbank Pre-schoolers learn through quality play experiences. .Local Early Years programs and opportunities are accessible to a wide range of families and services have the capacity to engage vulnerable families. Brimbank children are active learners. Brimbank families, early years services and schools work together to ensure children have the best possible start to school. Dynamic Young Citizens of Brimbank. Children growing up in Brimbank are provided with opportunities to participate in the local community.

Communities for Children Facilitating Partner (CfC FP) is place based and develops and facilitates a whole of community approach to support and enhance early childhood development and wellbeing for children from birth to 12 years The Smith Family is the Facilitating Partner of the Communities for Children FP (CfC FP) initiative in Brimbank. CfC FP is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Social Services (DSS). CfC FP Brimbank covers the suburbs of Ardeer, Albion, Cairnlea, Deer Park, Derrimut, St Albans North, St Albans South Sunshine, Sunshine North, Sunshine West, and Sydenham. There are 10 activities funded by the CfC FP Brimbank for the period 2015 – 2017.

Communities for Children FP Brimbank, VIC Program Overview 2015-2017 Community Partners are funded to deliver services within the Brimbank CfC FP site for children aged from birth to 12 years and their families.

Families Together Trained Parent Resource Workers deliver a range of evidence based parenting programs recognised by the Australian Institute of Family Studies. Two programs are delivered each term and free childminding is provided to parent/carers attending the programs. The Parent Resource Workers facilitate referrals for participating parents/cares requiring additional support. The evidence based parenting programs delivered are Bringing up Great Kids, Tuning in to Kids and Circle of Security. The programs aim to enhance the relationships between parents/carers and their children. Community Partner: MacKillop Family Services Service delivery area: Programs are delivered from various locations across the Brimbank CfC FP area. Vietnamese Supported Playgroups Three supported playgroups run during the school terms for parents/carers and their children aged 0-5 years from a Vietnamese background. Each term guest speakers visit the playgroups and families are supported to access other local services; including Maternal Child Health and Kindergarten Programs. Community Partner: Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association Service delivery area: The three Playgroups are located in Sunshine and St Albans. Two evidence based programs recognised by the Australian Institute of Family Studies are delivered through this activity, Family Mentoring Program and Empowering Parents Empowering Communities.  Bicultural Family Mentors provide support to families from a CALD background living in the Brimbank CfC FP area. Intervention Services, and Community Allied Health Services. Bicultural Family Mentors provide support to family and children services. This support increases the capacity of family and children services staff to engage and work with families from a CALD background. Empowering Parents Empowering Communities. Local parents are trained to run the ‘Being a Parent’ parenting program within their own communities. The program aims to help parents develop positive communication and parenting skills and to encourage parents to be mindful of how their words and actions can impact on children’s wellbeing.

Community Partner: VICSEG New Futures Service delivery area: Outreach in various locations within the Brimbank CfC FP area. Eligibility: Parents/ carers with children aged 0-12 years from a CALD background living in the Brimbank CfC FP area.

Professional support is provided in the primary schools where groups are being delivered and external welfare service providers working with children and their families in Brimbank. Community Partner: The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation Service delivery area: Groups are delivered in Primary Schools in the Brimbank CfC FP area. Building Blocks A supported playgroup for young parents and their children runs weekly during school terms. Young pregnant women are also welcome to join. Each term guest speakers visit the playgroup and families participate in excursions. The playgroup provides individual support to young women who present with complex needs.

Specialist Group Work Activity

Service delivery area: Good Shepherd Community House, St Albans

Primary school children presenting with challenging behaviours and at risk of disengaging from school can participate in a therapeutic group program. Seven groups are delivered each year in primary schools located in the Brimbank CfC FP area. From the seven programs delivered four are evidence based programs recognised by the Australian Institute of Family Studies.

Eligibility: Brimbank young parents and their children aged 0-5 years and pregnant young women.

The two evidence based programs are Feelings is Thinking and Drumbeat. Feelings is Thinking aims to create a safe environment for children to understand, express and manage their emotions. Drumbeat is a music program focused on exploring healthy, supportive relationships, emphasizing teamwork and cooperation.

Qualified Speech Pathologists run speech therapy groups for children identified as having a speech delay. The speech therapy groups are for children transitioning to school the following year. The programs offered are Leap into Language, Sounds and Stories and Cool-4-School.

Individual meetings are offered to parents/carers of children participating in the groups. Parent/carer information sessions are also offered midway of each children’s group.

Lingo Bingo

Participating children are supported with their school transition with a range of resources. Resources include an individual progress report and strategies. These strategies assist school staff and parents to further enhance the child’s transition to school.

Communities for Children FP Brimbank, VIC Program Overview 2015-2017 Secondary consultation is provided to school staff for children who have participated in the Lingo Bingo activity. Community Partner: ISIS Primary Care Service delivery area: ISIS Primary Care in Sunshine. Outreach visits will occur on an individual needs basis. Eligibility: Children starting primary school in 2016 and 2017 living in the Brimbank CfC FP area. Contact: Linda Crisci, 9313 5020, [email protected]

Polynesian Playgroup A supported playgroup is delivered each week during school terms for parents/carers and their children aged 0-5 years from a Pacific Islander background. The playgroup families celebrate their Pacific Islander culture through singing and dancing. Information sessions are included each term. Topics include dental hygiene, nutrition, active play, accessing kindergarten programs and Maternal Child Health Services. Shine with Education Support is provided to children and their families who have a parent/carer incarcerated. The activity consists of two programs: a Carers Group for nonincarcerated parents/carers and an Education Support program for children aged 5-12 years. The Carer’s Group provides opportunities for parents/carers to share their experiences and seek parenting advice and coping skills.

Strong Community means Happy Kids This activity consists of three main elements: A fortnightly supported playgroup for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander parents/carers and their children aged 0-5 years, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Women’s group and the provision of cultural activities in early years settings. The Supported Playgroup engages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents/carers and their children aged 0-5 years. Playgroup activities support children’s development in the areas of literacy and numeracy skills, as well as their language and social development. The Women’s Group focuses on strengthening the connections between local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and increasing their social, community and cultural connectedness. Cultural activities are provided in early years settings. Priority is to services that have Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander children attending. Communities for Children FP Brimbank, VIC Program Overview 2015-2017 Young Citizens of Brimbank This activity focuses on developing opportunities for Brimbank children aged 9-12 years to have a stronger influence on issues which affect them. Children participate in mock Council meetings, develop a project concept, presentations to Brimbank Council and drive a tangible community project.
