PECS  “PECS” stands for Picture Exchange Communication

System  Developed for younger children, but is now used with people of all ages  First addresses initiating communication through exchanging a picture for a desired item  Evolves to initiating communication related to wants, needs, etc  The end result is an individual who can initiate spontaneous communication

Sign Language  Sign Language  Different Types include but are not limited to: • American Sign Language (ASL)  Includes signs made with the hands and other movements, as

well as body posture and facial expressions  Main form of communication for the Deaf throughout the United States. • Signed English  Has a sign to represent each word in the English language • Signed Supported English  Mainly used by hearing individuals to communicate with people in the Deaf community

Sign Language  Children who have little communication or are

completely non-verbal can utilize sign language to initiate basic needs and wants.  Sign Language apps are available for download for use on iPads, iPhones, the iPod touch, and on a variety of tablets and other phones.  Can be incorporated into programs such as Proloquo2go.

Visual Schedules  Shows client what will be happening throughout the

course of the session  Client can see what is coming next  Can be involved through taking off the picture symbols as the task is completed.  Can include work and play symbols as well as symbols for a variety of other activities the client or therapist can choose from throughout a session.

Visual Supports  Visual supports are any tool presented visually that

supports an individual as he or she moves through the day. Visual supports might include, but are not limited to, pictures, written words, objects within the environment, arrangement of the environment or visual boundaries, schedules, maps, labels, organization systems, timelines, and scripts. They are used across settings to support individuals with ASD (National Research Council, 2001).

Visual Supports  Can be used for a variety of reasons such as…  Reminders of how to complete certain tasks, such as

getting on the bus or to communicate feelings

Visual Supports  Other visual supports such as the light switch can be

used as a reminder to turn off scripting behavior or the first/then cards can be used to show what a client has to complete first in order to get a reinforcing activity or item after.
