Giovanni La Via - EPP Born on 28 June 1963, Catania (Italy) Chair

Giovanni La Via is the Chair of the ENVI Committee. He has been part of the AGRI Committee since 2009. During the previous mandate, Giovanni La Via was especially involved with the funding, management and follow-up of the Common Agricultural Policy. Prior to that, he was a member of the Sicily Regional Executive with responsibility for agriculture and forestry from 2006 to 2009. Before that, he occupied several academic positions in the University of Catania from 1989 to 2003. He was head of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Catania in 2002. Mr. La Via has a Doctorate (PhD) in economics and agricultural policy from the University of Catania.

Françoise Grossetête - EPP Born on 17 May 1946, Lyon (France) Vice-Chair

Françoise Grossetête is the Vice-Chair of the ENVI Committee. She has been a member of the ENVI Committee since 1994. Ms. Grossetête, long-serving and high profile MEP, is knowledgeable in health issues and known for her interest in the issue of antibiotics. According to her, antibiotics are « victims of their own success » and « we are undergoing a change towards a postantibiotic age ». Prior to that, she was a parliamentary assistant from 1988 to 1997 and a law professor from 1969 to 1974.

Peter Liese - EPP Born on 20 May 1965, Olsberg (Germany) Coordinator

Peter Liese was re-appointed EPP coordinator for the ENVI Committee. He has been involved in the ENVI Committee activities since 1994 and is knowledgeable in bioethics (Chair of the EPP Group’s working party on bioethics). Before that, he worked as a ward doctor in Paderborn children’s hospital. He has a Doctorate from the Institute of Human Genetics, University of Bonn.

Matthias Groote - S&D Sozialdemokratische Partei MEP since 2005

Born on 21 October 1973, Leer (Germany) Coordinator

High-profile MEP, Matthias Groote was appointed coordinator for the S&D group for the next Parliament legislature. He was the former Chair of the ENVI Committee from 2012 to 2014. Prior to that, he occupied several political positions in the German socialist party from 1996 to 2003 and has local political responsibilities. He is an engineer.

Julie Girling - ECR Born on 21 December 1956, London (United Kingdom) Coordinator

Conservative Party MEP since 2009

Julie Girling is the appointed coordinator for the ECR group for the next mandate. She has a keen interest in all environmental matters as well as agriculture and has been a member of the ENVI Committee since 2009. She has been part of the AGRI Committee since 2012. Prior to that, she worked several years in the retail sector in United Kingdom. She has a Bachelor of Arts in History and Politics from the Liverpool University. She likes to spend her spare time riding horses and walking her dog.

Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy - ALDE Democrats 66 (D66) MEP since 2009

Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy ensures the coordination of the legislative activities within the ENVI Committee for the ALDE group. He was the former Vice-Chair of the ENVI Committee from 2012 to 2014. During the last mandate, MEP Gerbrandy was Shadow Rapporteur on the report on the proposed regulation on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species. He is known for his interest in the issue of the increasing use of antibiotics in animal husbandry. Before that, he was senior political adviser at the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. From 1994 to 1998, he was the personal assistant of a Dutch MEP (D66), Doeke Eisma. He studied public administration at Leiden University, and at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. 2

Czeslaw Adam Siekierski - EPP Born on 8 October 1952, Stopnica (Poland) Chair

Czeslaw Siekierski is the Chair of the AGRI Committee. He has been a member of the AGRI Committee since 2004 and became the Vice-Chair of the Committee in 2009. Prior to that, Siekierski had served as a member of the Polish Parliament from 1997 to 2004 and as secretary of state at the Ministry of Agriculture from 2001 to 2003. He has a Doctorate in economics and agricultural studies.

Albert Dess - EPP Born on 17 April 1947, Röckersbühl (Germany) Coordinator

Albert Dess was re-appointed coordinator for EPP group for the mandate 2014-2019. He is also a substitute member in the ENVI Committee. He is active on animal health issues. Member of the Bundestag from 1990 to 2004, he was the farm policy spokesman for the CSU Regional Group in the Bundestag from 1992 to 2004 and Chairman of the CSU Regional Group working party for Agriculture, Consumer Protection, Environment, Transport, Building and Energy from 2000 to 2004. Before that, he occupied several leadership positions in the CSU Agricultural Association from 1987 to 1995. At the beginning of his professional career, he was a full-time farmer and the managing director of a farming cooperative. He has a Master degree in agriculture.

Paolo de Castro - S&D Born on 2 February 1958, S. Pietro Vernotico (Italy) Coordinator

Paolo de Castro coordinates the legislative activities within the AGRI Committee for the S&D group. He is also a substitute member in the ENVI Committee. He was the former Chair of the AGRI Committee during the previous mandate. He is expert in and very active on veterinary medicines. Prior to that, he was Minister of agriculture, food, and forestry during 1998-2000 and 2006-2008. In 2002, Paolo De Castro was elected as a Member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, where he worked until 2008. He was Vice-Chairman of the Committee on agriculture and agri-food production in the Italian Senate, from 2008 to 2009. Since 2002, Paolo De Castro has been professor of agricultural policy at the University of Bologna. He has a degree in agriculture from the University of Bologna.

Janusz Wojciechowski - ECR Born on 6 December 1954, Rawa Mazowiecka (Poland) Vice-Chair

Janusz Wojciechowski is the Vice-Chair of the AGRI Committee. He is knowledgeable in animal health issues. He was Rapporteur on the report on the protection of animals during transport and on the directive regarding vaccination against bluetongue. Before that, he occupied several top political positions in Poland. He was elected Member of Parliament from 1993 to 1995 and from 2001 to 2004. He was appointed under-secretary of State at the Cabinet Office for legislative affairs in 1994. From 2001 to 2004, he became Vice-marshal of the Parliament. Prior to that, he worked as judge from 1980 to 1993. He has a Master of Law, from the University of Łódz.

James Nicholson - ECR Born on 29 January 1945, Armagh (Northern Ireland) Coordinator

Ulster Unionist Party MEP since 1989

Long-serving MEP, James Nicholson was appointed coordinator for the ECR group. He is also a substitute member in the ENVI Committee. James Nicholson significantly contributed to the negotiations regarding the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy. Prior to that, he was elected Member of the Parliament in United Kingdom in 1983 and was involved in the Agriculture Select Committee. He started his career working as a farmer.

Marit Paulsen - ALDE Folkpartiet liberalerna MEP since 1999

Born on 24 November 1939, Oslo (Norway) Member

Influential member of the AGRI Committee, the Swedish MEP Marit Paulsen is also a substitute member in the ENVI Committee. Former Vice-Chair of the AGRI Committee during the last legislature, she was Rapporteur on the proposed regulation on animal health law. Particularly known for her contribution to the Swedish public debate on environmental and food quality issues, she worked several years in an iron ore factory before becoming a farmer. 4

Jens Rohde - ALDE Born on 18 April 1970, Holstebro (Denmark) Coordinator

Jens Rohde ensures the coordination of the legislative activities within the AGRI Committee for the ALDE group. He was previously a member of the Danish Parliament.

Martin Häusling - The Greens / EFA Bündnis 90/Die Grünen MEP since 2009

Born on 26 March 1961, Bad Wildungen (Germany) Coordinator

Substitute member in the ENVI Committee, Martin Häusling was re-appointed Greens’ coordinator for the AGRI Committee. He is active on animal health issues. He is member of the German Dairy Farmers’ Association and involved in several national associations representing the biogas sector. He has been managing his family’s organic farm since 1985, producing cheese dairy.
