Message from

the  General Manager Steve Lamontagne General Manager

As we head into the middle of the summer, many club improvements are in progress. The Classic course is going through the regrassing process which consists of the fairways, greens and roughs. This 75 acre grass grow in is with the latest proven and environmentally friendly genetic strain of Bermuda turfgrass. We are regrassing all areas that our new irrigation system can cover. The process will enable us to provide more pin placements on the greens and have the greens go back to their original size. We are also fixing drainage issues on the course while it is closed. Mother Nature will be the one to determine when the course will re-open for all to enjoy. Other projects that will occur this summer include a remodel of the patio bar, ladies pool bathroom and new tennis poles and lights on courts 3&4. We will also seal our club’s main parking lot and continue to move along with the overlay of some cart paths on the Classic course. Our summer camp registration is well under way and filling quickly. The Around the World theme delivers an educational experience by way of fun filled games, activities and all new field trips. Our swim team is in full swing and we are seeing growing participation from previous years. Our golf and tennis academies will be in progress through the end of July.

4

Many of the academy’s recent participants have gone on to have much success throughout their high school golfing years. I’m proud to say and have been fortunate enough to see many of our younger kids that have participated in our programs receive college scholarships. Our activities and dining departments are gearing up for the summer. Plans are in place for a comedy show, specialty buffets, holiday poolside celebrations and bus trips. Our tennis department is excited to be introducing our Intra-Club Mixed Doubles League. I look forward to this league as an opportunity for new and existing members alike to meet each other and to enjoy their club! Suntree Country Club has made many improvements over the past few years. These improvements including a new irrigation system and complete regressing of our Classic course will be instrumental in reaching our goal of 525 Golf members.

Summer is truly an exciting time for golf professionals. It gives us the time and opportunity to work with our future golfers. This summer is no exception. We have a plethora of activates for junior golfers to get plugged in to at the club. There are three different levels of camps for kids ages 5-17 to participate in. Weekly clinics on Sunday from 1:00-2:00 are being offered as well. We are also excited to start up our tournament series towards the latter part of the summer. We have four beginning level camp sessions for our juniors. These camps offer kids the opportunity to learn the basic fundamentals, as well as, the rules and etiquette in a fun filled environment. There are two advanced camps being held to give kids the opportunity to improve their skills on the golf course, and learn new aspects of the game. We are also excited to introduce a new elite camp for those more experienced tournament players looking to play in high school and maybe one day in college. While the heat of the summer slows down the amount of play our golf courses see, we still invite everyone to participate in our Fourth of July and Labor Day golf tournaments. Multi day golf schools and demo days will be held to keep you busy during the dog days of summer.

We want to thank all members and their guests for participating in all of our Club tournaments this past season. We finished off the season with our Ladies member Guest golf tournament. This year’s event was the most attended Ladies Member Guest in club history. We would like to thank all of the committee members along with all of the lady participants that made this year’s event a great success. Course  News Jon Cockerham

Director of Golf Course Maintenance

We are well underway with the regrassing project on the Classic Course. However, regrassing is not all that is going on. Cart paths are being repaved on 2, 3 and 8. Many bunkers are going to be renovated with new sand. Visual and drainage improvements will be made to those bunkers as well. The right side of #2 has had a surface water and ground water drainage system installed by an outside contractor. We will be regrading the drainage ditch along the right side of the #2 green to allow for easier maintenance. We are removing some of the heavy muck soils down the right side of the 10th hole and adding clean fill to be planted with the new Celebration turf to help alleviate many of the wet areas down that side of the hole. Improvements are being made to the area around the 7th tee cartpath to allow quicker drainage after heavy rains. Four tee tops have been stripped and laser graded; #8 white/blue tee, #17 gold/green tee, #18 green and gold tee. We will also be using a large roller to smooth out some of the minor crowning on all tee tops after we soften them with our aerifiers. These improvements are just to name a few in addition to the regressing project. During the greens regrassing stages we were able to return the greens to a much more user friendly condition by contouring

Summer 2015

pin location areas to provide more usable space. The left sides of greens 2, 5, 8 and 9 were significantly recontoured to allow “tournament” pin locations that are more receptive to good shots, while also keeping putts from the center of the green from rolling off the green. The north end of the putting green has been enlarged by 60% and contoured for much more usable space as well. We do not have an exact date to re-open the Classic course as the weather will play an important role in the grow-in phase. Suffice it to say that we are looking at an August/September time frame, and will not open the course until we feel that it is mature enough to handle routine golf traffic.

The Regrassing Project continues on the Classic Course.

Is it just me, or is this year flying by? Our Memorial Day barbeque has come and gone, a sure sign that another HOT summer is fast approaching. Our kitchen staff was poolside grilling our “classic holiday buffet” and enjoyed some food, fun and sun with our members and guests. Our first BBQ of the summer was a huge success and fun was had by all. Summer time usually means a little bit of a slowdown period for the kitchen, but not this year. I have just finished new menus to be featured in the next few months that I hope will grab your attention and tempt you to come in for some fantastic events. I’ve scheduled one of our most popular buffets for early June, the Suntree Seafood Buffet. The buffet will feature shrimp cocktail, snow crab legs and carved prime rib as this is one of our “staples” and favorites here at the club. Our next poolside BBQ is scheduled for the 4th of July, so be sure to join us before taking a nap and checking out some fireworks. I’ve also put together a few Saturday evening’s in July featuring steaks and pasta’s. Cowboy Ribeye’s, Porterhouse’s and Fresh Local Grouper will be highlight at our grill and sauté stations as I challenge my culinary team to deliver mouthwatering dishes

Summer 2015

to our members and their guests. We will be out of the kitchen sautéing up some delightful pasta dishes during our Pasta night wrapping up the month. My staff always enjoys the opportunity to meet and get to know our members while serving at our pasta and carving stations. We hope that you do to! I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who attended our very successful Mother’s Day Brunch. It was a challenge, yet one met head on as our wonderful staff served over 400 members and their guests with little or no interruptions from my pesky friend Murphy, as in “Murphy’s Law”. I look forward to Father’s Day Brunch as another well attended event for our members and families to be a part of. Reservations are always encouraged as we strive to make everyone’s experience as enjoyable as possible. Once again, thank you for all of your support and suggestions. I look forward to seeing you around the club!
