CHAPTER 1 FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSION HIV AND AIDS INFORMATION NEED ASSESMENTS AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN JAKARTA AND PAPUA

1.1

Background Since the main focus on this project is youth, in the first month of the project we seek

basic data regards to the Youth (tertiary students). It is very important to have deep understanding on the content of information, method of information delivery that attractive and appropriate to context of student in current situation. Particularly an actively discussion involve students need to be conducted to explore their need to HIV and AIDS information. However, some challenges had been identified and should be improved for the next elearning program. The development and highly usage of social media will also need to be explored in order to increasing student’s access to HIV and AIDS information. Therefore, the results will be benefit to develop more attractive and useful modules for e-learning program We contacted the Independent Youth Alliance to ask their help collaborated with us. Ms. Fita Rizky Utami as representative for the ARI (Aliansi Remaja Independen/ Independent Youth Alliance) agree to set up Forum Group Discussion (FGD) within their members. Anyway, we choose ARI as our partner because their previous experience in build youth community and their main focus on HIV prevention. In addition their large network and experience using social media is a potential reason to collaborate with. 1.2

Research Focus The problems described in the introduction can be formulated in few parts. The First part

is related to source of information about HIV and AIDS, the second part is knowledge of youth about HIV and AIDS, the third part is about youth behaviors related to basic HIV and AIDS, the

7

fourth part is about youth attitudes related to HIV and AIDS, and the last part is about information needs and method to delivery information about HIV and AIDS. 1.3

Goals of FGD To identify the needs of youth in gaining knowledge for prevent HIV transmission.

1.4

Objectives of FGD 1. To explore knowledge, attitude, and behavior on HIV and AIDS among university students 2. To explore need for HIV and AIDS among university students 3. To explore innovative and attractive method to deliver information on HIV and AIDS for university students

1.5

Participants of FGD This FGD will involve university students from four universities in Jakarta area:

University of Indonesia, University Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka, Unversitas Paramadina, Universitas Negeri Jakarta. In addition, it is also possible to involve university students in Kupang, Mataram, and Jogjakarta. Criteria of this FGD is currently active students from year one until forth, and from various major except health. 1.6

Method of FGD This FGD will be conducted at each university that will involve eight students. This FGD

will be facilitated by ARI’s member and one note taker will help to documented all discussion process. The result will be analyzed using qualitative data processing software and the output will be presented in matrix.

Key Findings

Theme 1. Sources of information According to the FGD, most informants heard HIV and AIDS since junior high school, while others on elementary school. An informant had HIV and AIDS knowledge from parent, while others had it from media such as television, advertisement, a song by Superglad Band, poster, book, magazine, banner, internet, and film.

“United our feelings, even our heart is tired, be brave to life this live that caused by our act. No need to sad, no need to cry, you suppose to do this, all was happened. Every 6 second there is 1 person infected by HIV. More than half are young people.” (Satu by Superglad)

Among informants there are varied knowledge on HIV and AIDS. Some informants have comprehensive knowledge, while others only limited knowledge. A misconception on HIV and AIDS is common happened during the first information transfer.

“Do not get close to women because they can transmit many diseases, including HIV and AIDS”. (Informan ????) “When I ask my parents, they answer that HIV is virus, whole AIDS is acronym of I WANT TO BE CALLED BY SUHARTO (AKU INGIN DITELEPON SUHARTO.” (Informan???)

10

Most informant got information about HIV and AIDS transmission, prevention, injected drugs, PLHIV testimony. Some informants also said they got information about stage of disease, impact of HIV and AIDS, and condom usage. Regarding informant’s intention to searching for HIV and AIDS information is varied. Some are interested to looking for it from the internet, while other prefer to ask friend, family, lecturer, researcher, novel, book, magazine, radio, and film. Among the informants, there are also some informantsts who do not interested on HIV and AIDS information, especially one that deliver trough patronizing technique.

Theme 2. Knowledge about HIV AND AIDS Informants understanding on HIV and AIDS is limited to incurable disease that attack the immune system and can be transmitted through blood, sexual intercourse, and injecting drugs. Some informants also explain that HIV and AIDS was found in Africa and caused by free sex. Important to be noted that almost all informants said free sex term not unsafe sex, as the important cause. Also, few informants still have misconception on HIV transmission, such as shared toilet, towel, air, saliva, swimming together, and food seller who bleeding, etc. These misconceptions are circulated trough Blackberry messenger (BBM), mouth to mouth, and internet.

“There is an issue a child infected by HIV because he/she eats rujak. So maybe the seller is infected and knife cuts his hand while cutting the fruit.” (Informants 104) “There is an issue that person infected by HIV are intentionally transmits it by tuck a toothpick into his/her gums to bleed and put it back into place. This is usually happen at restaurant.” (Infromant 203) “Also issue that they transmit through put infected needles at cinema’s chair.” (Informant 104) 11

Theme 3. Youth Behaviour Related to HIV and AIDS Most informants express common behavior that related to HIV and AIDS transmission. Those behaviors that are related to sexual activities are kissing, petting, and intercourse with girlfriend/ boyfriend and also sex worker. In addition, some informants also said that sharing needles, drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana and inhale “aibon” glue, clubbing, as sign of solidarity among friends.

“Trough unsterile needle, also tattoo needle, those all besides free sex.” (Informant 405)

Informants has different strategy to prevent from HIV infection, varied from healthy life style, defend with religion, not using injecting drugs or using sterile needle, aware with medical and tattoo equipment, be faithful to partner, and using contraception such as condom. However, few informants are against condom promotion to prevent HIV transmission, they consider it as also legalizing “free sex”. So they prefer to selects friends and do pre marital check, instead.

“Doing religious activities as much as possible, but if he/she already doing free sex, they should use condom.” (Informants 402) “By giving condom to do HIV and AIDS education is wrong, because it can increase free sex.” (Informants 204)

Theme 4. Youth Attitudes Related to HIV AND AIDS Informants have different attitudes toward PLHIV. Some informants will keep distance if they have friends or family member who is infected. They refuse to share foods and drink, even ask them to suicide then suffer. However, few of them will behave normally as they behave to

12

others, even some informants will motivate them, pray for them, giving information about HIV and AIDS, or connect them to HIV and AIDS NGOs.

“At first, I ask why he/she could be infected. Then building his/ her confidence and let his/ her expressing feelings.” (Informant 301) “Help by praying.” (Informant 302) “To be honest, I prefer to accept PLHIV than IDU, because I could empathy to him/her. So it is important to telling people how to deal with PLHIV and support them so they can face their future.” (Informant 104) “To be honest, I will keep distance, because I still do not know the transmission.” (Informants 101) “At the beginning of infection, I act as usual, because he looks fine. But when the disease getting severe, the wound is disgusting, then I scare.” (Informant 208)

Informants also express their attitude toward sexual active friends. Related to this, most of informants will give their friend some advice to stop their behavior, and ask them to do other positive activities or doing that after marriage. However, some informants realize that it is people rights to do sexual activity, so they will not care of people business or recommend them to use condom. Few express confuse because they do not aware any sexual active friends.

“I will act as usual, because there are many students who are pregnant, married or not married.” (Informant 104) “I never heard any campus friends who are doing free sex, but I know a friend who life at dorm who doing that. I act as usual.” (Informant 101)

13

Attitude toward injecting drugs user also varied among informants. Most of informants prefer to give some advice to stop using drugs, giving information that injecting drugs can transmit HIV and recommend them to use sterile needle. An informant sharing her experience about her IDU friend, she gets along with him as long as he does not inject drugs in front of her. “I ever said, you better suicide than suffer like that. However, I still be his friend as long as he do not inject in front of me.” (Informant 203)

Theme 5. Information needs about HIV and AIDS All informants are agree that they need information about HIV and AIDS, especially its definition, history, prevention, transmission, stage of development, care and treatment, stigma and discrimination. Some respondents are interest to start giving information by clarified issues stated in previous theme. For them it is very interesting as it related to their daily life.

“I need to know why PLHIV want to transmit their disease to others.” (Informant 204) “To be honest, I still do not know the transmission? Whether it is through the air? Sharing towel?” (Informant 101) “Some information about its history, transmission, development stage, treatment and care.” (Informant 403) “Information on HIV care and treatment progress.” (Informant 303) “It is important to provide clarification on issues, transmission, how to detect someone infected, , how to deal with someone, friends or family, infected.” (Informant 104)

14

Theme 6. Method to deliver information about HIV AND AIDS Informants have different preference regarding method or strategy to deliver HIV and AIDS information. Some of them think that current methods and information are sufficient. However, to make it more interested, they suggest to present testimony of PLHIV. “In my opinion all methods are good enough. But not shocking enough, if it is possible I think presenting PLHIV rs a good idea.” Other than that, information sharing about HIV AND AIDS should be more interesting and using audio visual media, for example film, theater, comic and animation, books, interactive interest website,

and other media that not patronizing.

A respondents suggest to deliver

information by using strategies that implemented during the new orde, a nationwide television broadcast HIV and AIDS information. Therefore, all Indonesian citizens will watch it.

“In my opinion better it is better to go back to orde baru. So at 7-8 pm there is information about HIV on TV so there is no option other than to watch it” “I think seminar is boring, it’s a method that is not accepted by young people anymore. More creative methods such as music events is more interesting, for example MTV Staying Alive.” “I prefer movies and animation” “Not boring methods that are patronizing. Not like this not like that. So maybe like a film”

Although media has significant influence on informants, but there are some informants who suggest delivering HIV and AIDS information through family member, especially parents. An informants experience a great benefit from her parent’s information about sex.

15

“Since I was a little my parents had gave me sex education. Even my parents showed me how to use condom and lubricant. Fortunately, my parents never told me to do this or not to do this.” (Informant 203)

Regarding internet roles on HIV and AIDS campaign, informants expect it to be interesting by using animation and picture, with few words. For them it is easier to understand and more interesting, rather than a full text website. Facebook and twitter are also good strategies to reaching young people, because they frequently open these social media. They suggest making monthly and weekly hashtag (#), so people knowledge information or issues been discussed.

“The discussion should be accessible for public and massive, also could be follow via mobile by using weekly hastag. There is fix hastag, such as #HIVprevention and also hastag for each topic, such as #HIVhistory. Direct discussion is also important, whether virtual or face to face. Or maybe using quiz with interesting presents.” (Informant 104)

After the presentation, we also conduct Q and A session. But on this term no one asked. On the second session, Mrs. Rita Damayanti brought her presentation about HIV Education in Tertiary Level. Then Mrs. Agustin Kusumayati talked about outline and schedule for Video Conference and E-Learning Course on HIV-AIDS Prevention. After that the Q and A session. After the lunch, we discussed about technique for video conference, e-learning and webinar. All this material was performed by Mr. Gatot F. Hertono as head of GDLN UI. He also share his experience about the same course which has been held on 2009. After all, we asked each representative about their commitment to participate on the course. At that time several Universities was spontaneously agree to join the course. Every university was gave their opinion such as:

1. Institut Pertanian Bogor Agree to join the course 2. Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta

30

Agree to join, while have no facilities conduct the course on their university. They also need to internally discussed further about the credit transfer. We have suggest them to join us on our facility, either in Depok or Salemba. 3. Universitas Negeri Papua Can’t gave any answer about the commitment to join. They still consider the network quality for video conference which still not optimal. UNIPA also need more information about the syllabus and the chance of Dikti to include this course on curriculum in Indonesia. 4. Universitas Pattimura Ambon Agree to join though they still consider their quality of video conference. 5. Universitas Bina Nusantara Agree to join. Binus also plan to use another method of e-learning which is webinar (video streaming di web) to accommodate their students. 6. Universitas Nusa Cendana Agree to participate. 7. Universitas Pancasila Still can not decide 8. Universitas Moestopo Still can not decide whether to join or not, but they will send their students to UI (Depok atau salemba) if they finally join. 9. Universitas Kristen Indonesia Agree to participate. 10. Universitas Cendrawasih (Pak Julius) Still cannot decide and will confirm as soon as possible. 11. Universitas Gunadarma Still cannot decide and need to discussed internally. Meanwhile, they have all the supporting facilities. 12. Universitas Respati Indonesia Still cannot decide as need to discussed with their IT Team, though they already have all the facility and do the video conference before. 31

13. Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Still cannot decide and need to discussed internally. Meanwhile, they have all the supporting facilities. 14. Institut Teknologi Bandung Cannot participate. Technically the all have the facility, but they concerned about schedule of the students especially because the students have begin the new semester. 15. Univ. Agung Tirtayasa Agree to participate still need time to discussed internally.

From all the problems that universities face, we try to offer solution such as : 1. For they who don’t have the video conference facilitate, they can join the nearest universities or using the webinar mode. 2. Most Universities which don’t have health science faculty they can asked KPAD or other institutions to participate at this course as facilitator. 3.
