Dean Jane Clark will host a reception for graduates and their families in the Grand Ballroom of Stamp Student Union immediately following the SPH graduation ceremony. This is a great chance for students and families to mingle with SPH professors and staff. Light refreshments will be served.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Dr. Lawrence Tabak, DDS, PhD PRINCIPAL DEPUTY DIRECTOR NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH

Dr. Tabak is the principal deputy director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He previously served as the acting principal deputy director of NIH (2009), and before that as director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (2000-10). Dr. Tabak has provided leadership for several trans-NIH activities, including the Enhancement of Rigor and Reproducibility of Research Findings, strategic planning for health research related to sexual and gender minorities (SGM), and the NIH’s implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Currently, he is leading efforts to develop the NIHwide Strategic Plan, as well as a strategic pediatric environmental research program. Prior to joining NIH, Dr. Tabak was the senior associate dean for research and professor of dentistry and biochemistry & biophysics in the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Rochester in New York. A former NIH MERIT research award recipient, Dr. Tabak’s major research focus has been on the structure, biosynthesis and function of glycoproteins, which are proteins that have sugars attached to them and which help the immune, digestive and reproductive systems. He continues work in this area, maintaining an active research laboratory within the NIH intramural program in addition to his administrative duties. Dr. Tabak is an elected member the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. He received his undergraduate degree from City College of New York, his DDS from Columbia University, and a PhD from the University of Buffalo.
