Message from the chairman The term cluster is defined as a geographically group of companies and associated institutions in a particular field, linked by commonalities and complementarities. A cluster is comprised of a group of interconnected companies and institutions whose value as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. In 2010, Dr. Michael Porter and Dr. Christian Ketels performed an analysis of the Icelandic geothermal cluster in cooperation with the consultancy Gekon. Nearly 60 different stakeholders within the cluster were involved in the project. A steering committee was established and for the next three years the Iceland Geothermal cluster was more of an informal initiative. It was based on an agreement directly to Gekon with different cluster members. February 15, 2013 marked the foundation of the Iceland Geothermal Cluster as a formal organization. Instead of a steering committee, the cluster organization now has its own board of 11 members and a service agreement was made with Gekon to manage the cluster. This annual report is therefore the first of its kind in the cluster organization´s history. The highlight of the year 2013 is the Iceland Geothermal Conference, which was held in March 2013 and was a huge success. More than 600 participants came from 40 countries to attend the conference, which was the largest geothermal event ever held in Iceland. 250 of the participants came from abroad to attend the conference. There were 57 presentations divided into 3 categories: the geothermal value chain, exploration, realization and utilization. The next Geothermal Conference is scheduled to take place in 2016. The Board worked out a future strategy for the cluster cooperation and agreed to put emphasize three main topics: Communication, Knowledge and Innovation. Next year the board would like to see more effort in the work of the cluster on these topics, both among start-up companies as well as established ones. I sincerely thank my board members for their fruitful cooperation, which has been professional to my great pleasure. I also sincerely thank Gekon’s people; Hakon, Rosbjorg and the rest of their team for their highly professional work in leading and constructing the working procedures of the cluster. Gekon´s help to me has been invaluable and without which I would have been lost. Last but not least my thanks to Viðar, the only employee of the Cluster, who has carried out his work with enthusiasm in a highly professional manner.

The Iceland Geothermal cluster initiative; origin and development Iceland Geothermal is a none profit organisation established in February 2013 around an industry-driven cluster cooperation in the field of geothermal energy. There were 43 founding members who reflected the large breadth of companies, associations and institutions that belong to the Icelandic geothermal cluster. The purpose and its goal of the organisation is to strengthen and stimulate competitiveness within infrastructure of the Icelandic geothermal cluster with added value in the sector and improved utilisation of the resource in mind.

The cluster cooperation is based on ten defined cooperative projects all of which aim to strengthen the infrastructure of the Icelandic geothermal cluster. They are the outcome of a special workshop that was held among the cluster members in May 2011. Cluster members have been working on the ten projects actively since September 2011.

On February 15th 2013 a legal entity for the Iceland Geothermal cluster initiative was established by 43 partners. Strategy 2014-2019 In 2013 the board of directors made the decision to form a strategic vision for the cluster initiative. On a general meeting in the organisation in December 2013 the chairman presented the key elements from the work of the board.

Mission Mission of the Iceland Geothermal Cluster Initiative is to be a platform providing value from the unique value proposition Iceland has as a geothermal country; both for society and business.

Vision In 2019 the Iceland Geothermal Cluster will be internationally recognised in the field of innovation, education and business development in the field of geothermal industry and will be supporting Icelandic companies to become the leaders in providing services in the global value chain of geothermal energy.

Objectives

Increase supply of education within the field of renewable energy in all levels of the educational system in Iceland. Continuing to support increased research – and the cooperation with GEORG. Iceland Geothermal will be the promoter for conferences, workshops, seminars in all levels of the geothermal value chain; Exploration, Realization and Utilisation. Iceland Geothermal will advocate the geothermal industry value proposition world wide – and will continue to grow its massive international network.

Communication

Increase value creation, supported by research, development innovation and new ideas. Support cluster members to participate in projects overseas Iceland Geothermal will be the initiative player of start-up projects and innovation processes. Iceland Geothermal will be a bridge builder between researchers and business environment to increase value creation and competitiveness in the industry

The guiding lights of Iceland Geothermal Cluster Initiative will be increasing innovation and development through collaboration and cooperation and will be focusing on three main areas to reach its strategic objectives.

Iceland Geothermal aim is to be a gateway for a „one stop shop„ for both government and business interests from abroad. „Iceland geothermal„ can be identified as a „brand„ for Iceland service and knowledge in the industry. „Iceland Geothermal Platform“ is a nationwide phenomenon Cooperate with geothermal cluster initiatives in other countries. Cooperate with related clusters in Iceland – tourism, health care, maritime and others.

Iceland Geothermal Conference – IGC2013 The Iceland Geothermal Conference – IGC2013 took place in March 5-8, 2013 in Harpa, Conference Centre in Reykjavík. It has helped carry a positive message for the possibilities within the green energy industry, according to various reviews posted online. The overall theme of the Iceland Geothermal Conference 2013 was to share effective exploration methods, learn how to maximize the utilization of geothermal energy from veterans and explore. The Iceland Geothermal Conference 2013 marked a turning point and the last step in formalizing the Iceland Geothermal Cluster. The special position of IGC 2013 did consist in the proximity to the geothermal areas, easy access to Icelandic geothermal experts, handselected speakers from all around the world, who ensured the quality of the content of the conference and first-class facilities. There were 600 participants, delegates, and exhibitors who attended the conference to discuss changes and forward thinking within the geothermal industry, with 57 presentations given by global figureheads within the industry. There were more than 40 nationalities presented at the conference and it is by far the largest conference on geothermal issues ever held in Iceland. The IGC 2013 brought together respected experts from all around the world and provided opportunities for networking and exchange of knowledge in all fields of the geothermal value chain. The next Iceland Geothermal Conference will be held in Reykjavik in April 2016.

We have audited the accompanying financial statements of Iceland Geothermal, which comprise the income statement for the year 2013, statement of financial position as at December 31, 2013, cash flows for the year then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and notes, comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information. Management's Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with Icelandic Financial Statements Act No. 3/2006, and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditor's Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor's judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity's preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. Endorsement by the Board of Directors Iceland Geothermal was established in Reykjavik on February 15, 2013 as a cluster organisation within the geothermal industry in Iceland. The term cluster has been defined as a geographically group of companies and associated organisations in a particular field, linked by commonalities and complementarities. The founding members of the cluster were 43 organisations related to the organisations clusters and are described in the statutes for Iceland geothermal as “an industry driven cluster cooperation for firms, institutions, educational institutes, and others willing to increase the competitiveness and create value in the geothermal sector”. At the end of the year there were 50 members accepted in the organisation, of which 34 were paying member fees. Contributors Many people think that the financing of the cluster is the most important thing in the cluster work, however that is not the case. The most important part in managing cluster cooperation is to have the active involvement of the cluster members. We at Iceland Geothermal are very fortunate to have very active participation in everything the cluster initiative has decided to put on the agenda.
