GETTING STARTED Thank you for celebrating Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School with this event pack. Old School is the tenth book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, which is a huge landmark, so there’s more reason than ever to celebrate! This pack includes suggestions for fun games and activities for entertaining fans, as well as materials to help you promote your event. We’ve included an event poster for you to fill in and pin up, and mini invitation bookmarks to hand out to children in advance of the event. You can pick and choose which of these activities will work best for the size and age range of your crowd, and you can put the activities in any order you like. You can also reproduce and distribute the activity sheets in this guide for fans to enjoy right away or take home to have fun later! OTHER IDEAS Below are some further suggestions to enhance your Old School event to create the best possible Old School party! Get decorating! Inside this pack there are lots of items you can use to decorate your space, including a book poster, bunting and balloons (for adult use only; not suitable for children). But why not get creative and make your own decorations as well? You could create paper chains out of black, purple and yellow paper, or even use papier-mâché to create a life-size Greg head! Play dress-up. Encourage fans to come dressed as their favourite Wimpy Kid character. Or ask them to come dressed in head-to-toe black, purple and yellow to match the cover of Old School. You could even arrange a costume parade through your school, library or bookshop! Serve Wimpy Kid-themed snacks. Serve retro sweets to match the Old School theme, and don’t forget the Black Jacks to match the book cover! You need 1 cup of sugar, 4–6 fresh lemons and 4–5 cups of water Method Place 1 cup of sugar in a heatproof mixing jug and add 1 cup of boiling water, stirring gently until the sugar dissolves. Use a lemon squeezer to squeeze the juice of 4–6 fresh lemons, enough to make a cupful. Mix the sugar-water and lemon juice together in a tall jug/pitcher and add 3–4 cups of water to taste. Refrigerate for 30 minutes and serve with lots of ice and slices of lemon.

SETTING UP WIMPY is a wimpified version of the game BINGO. You’ll need to photocopy enough copies of the WIMPY game board (next page) to distribute to everyone at the event. HOW TO PLAY Before you start, distribute one WIMPY game board to each player and ask them to write one word or phrase from the Word Box in each of the empty board spaces. Players can place the words in any order and in any box they choose, as long as they do not repeat words or phrases. To play, ask the players the questions listed below. Each answer (in brackets below) corresponds to a word/ phrase from the Word Box. If the players have a correct answer on their game board, they should circle or mark the word. The first person to mark off a full row, column or diagonal line has to shout ‘WIMPY!’ to win! Check to make sure the answers are correct and award a prize. You might need to photocopy this page if you have a larger group. HOW TO PLAY The object of the game is for players to try to figure out which book character they’ve been assigned by going around the room and talking to one another. Each player can ask Yes or No questions to figure out who they are. (For example, “Am I best friends with Greg?”) When a player discovers who they are, they can step out of the game. SETTING UP Cut out the slips of paper below, and hand three random slips to each person in the group. You may need to photocopy this sheet so that there are enough slips of paper for everyone. HOW TO PLAY Once the game begins, players have two minutes to swap their slips of paper with other players. Players should trade for slips of paper whose phrases most accurately reflect their personality. Each slip of paper has an image of a Wimpy Kid character on it. Once the time runs out, players should count how many slips they have with each character on. The character that appears the most on the player’s slip is the character with whom they have the most in common!
