Defeated the Denver Bears by one game to win the 1953 Western League regular season title.  Team consisted of many iconic players from the 1950s - Sam Hairston (CSSC and Sky Sox HoF), Jim Landis (Chicago White Sox) and Jerry Crosby (long-time resident of COS). Also included Earl Battey (Twins), Don Bradey (Houston Colt 45s), Joe Hicks (White Sox, Senators, Mets) and long time minor leaguers Al Jacinto, Len Johnston, Bill Pope and Bob Kerce.  The 1950s Sky Sox most successful manager, Don Gutteridge, was the team's skipper. A former member of the St. Louis Cardinals Gas House Gang, Gutteridge's team finished second (one game behind) in 1952 before winning the league title in 1953. Gutteridge became a long-time Chicago White Sox coach, and managed the White Sox for parts of the 1969-70 seasons  Bill MacPhail was the General Manager - his promotional, business and athletic-identification skills helped the 1953 team play before the second highest season attendance of the Sky Sox in the 1950s.  The Western League of 1953 was a Class A league that consisted of the eight original teams of the reestablished league after World War II - Pueblo, Denver, Lincoln, Omaha, Sioux City, Des Moines, Wichita and Colorado Springs. The league was at its peak and the Sky Sox won its pennant. In 1955, Denver and Omaha left for the American Association and AAA-level baseball and only 6 teams competed in the Western league; in 1956, Albuquerque and Amarillo were added to bring the league back to eight teams, but the league had financial difficulties, high expenses for long distance travel and folded after the 1958 season. 4

The 1953 Sky Sox was the first of three Sky Sox teams that won the Western league regular season championship for Colorado Springs. The 1955 team won the regular season crown in a 6-team league; the 1958 team won the title in the league's final season. The team was the first champion team - and three of its five major leaguers are still alive - Jim Landis, Don Bradey and Joe Hicks. Don Bradey could attend and tell stories of the team; Jim Landis would be available for a video (doesn't travel much; lives in CA) and Joe Hicks has not been contacted.

Bill MacPhail – Baseball (submitted in March 2012)  Important part of the development of Minor League Baseball in Colorado Springs  Began his career as a road secretary with the New York Yankees, when his father, Larry MacPhail, was President, GM and co-owner of the team  Gained experience as an Assistant GM with the Triple-A Kansas City Blues and Double-A Memphis Chicks  In 1949, once Co Springs was awarded an expansion franchise in the Single-A Western League, CO Springs team president named MacPhail as the team’s first GM  Created a great reputation within the Co Springs area  In 1953, the Sky Sox won the Western League regular season title, maintained the second best mark in the league  After a long road of hardships, MacPhail eventually wound up being hired by CBS Sports to become a Sports Director, then an executive with the network, after serving one season as PR Director for the new Kansas City Athletics organization in 1955  MacPhail had part in televising the start of “The Masters” coverage in 1956, the Olympics, summer and winter; he also worked out a deal with Pete Rozelle and the NFL to air NFL games in 1961.  Due to the success of the NFL Television Contract, due to the basis of the revenue sharing TV contract, it would make MacPhail the first recipient of the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Radio and Television Award  Played a part in developing a Major League Baseball on CBS sports package through 1966  Developed the “CBS Sports Spectacular”, a sports anthology series, in 1960  Hired some big names: Pat Summerall, Chris Schenkel, Jack Whitaker, Jim McKay, Frank Gifford, and golf producer Frank Chirkinian  Following his career at CBs, he began working at CNN and began a new sports division for Ted Turner in 1979; highlights from various sports were aired during CNN broadcasts  During his 16 year tenure with CNN, important hires include: Dan Patrick, Nick Charles, Fred Hickman, Jim Huber, Keith Olbermann, Hannah Storm and Dan Hicks Bob Spear – Former Air Force Men’s Basketball Coach (began tracking in 2015)  Led program to two NCAA tournaments and most wins in program history Boyd Epley – National Strength & Conditioning Association (began tracking in 2015)  Founder of National Strength & Conditioning Association in 1978  Godfather of strength & conditioning – strength coach at University of Nebraska for 35 years; helped Nebraska win 5 national championships in football, 3 Heisman Trophy winners and 356 wins  Lifetime Achievement Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (2014) Bradley J. Dolphus Stroud – (submitted in 2014)  World-class distance runner who trained by running to the summit of Pikes Peak  He was denied the opportunity to run for Colorado Springs High School in the early 1920s because of his skin color and he told the team as he left that he would be in the Olympics one day  Won headlines for running the marathon roundtrip of Pikes Peak in 2 hours 53 minutes in 1928  Won the Regional Olympic Trials in Denver on June 17th, 1928, was awarded a train ticket to Boston to compete in the US Olympic Trials on July 6-7, 1928  Officials would not let him ride this train with the white athletes; they said he could compete if he found his own transportation to Boston  He decided to hitchhike, so on June 25, 1928, he left Colorado Springs with 10 dollars  Arrived at the race just hours before it was to start, but during the race the toll he took from his trip was evident as his vision became blurry and he eventually fell  A white runner who qualified helped him up and offered him food and a place to stay, he stayed in Boston for the summer and worked to buy a train ticket back to Colorado Springs  He then attended Colorado College and was the first black person elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society  He later raced a Finnish Olympic Qualifier in an 8-mile race and won, proving to himself that he could have made it to the Olympics Don Bates – (submitted in 2014)  Played goalie for Colorado College for two years before contracting tuberculosis  Hospitalized for 19 months, but felt the need to repay CC for his scholarship and education, so he landed a job as the JV Hockey Coach at the college from 1949-51  Voted CC’s most popular player in KRDO’s first ever voting by fans (1947)  Color commentary for CC Hockey while he was in college, including the 1950 NCAA Championship season  First ever public address announcer for Colorado Springs Sky Sox  Hockey referee at the collegiate, high school, and Young America levels in COS and Denver and was an on-ice official for the US National Midget Championship at the Broadmoor in 1968 Donald L. The outcome has been an enhancement of the credibility of the performances by American athletes around the world. Vic Kregel — USAFA (Submitted in 2011)  Life-long amateur golfer until retiring from the USAF in 1965  Won the Air Force National Golf Championship in 1946, shooting 5 under park and defeating the defending champion  Has won over 40 golf championships all over the world, including Colorado  Coached the Varsity golf team at USAFA from 1962-1965 while serving as the Business Manager in their Athletic Department  Coached the Varsity golf team at UCCS from 1990-1991 and raised funds for the new golf scholarship program  Returned to Colorado Springs in 1987 and has served on many golf committees and fundraising groups including the Eisenhower Men’s Golf Association at the USAFA  Is the first Honorary Life Member of EMGA and their annual two day tournament has been re-named “The Vie Kregel EMGA Championship Tournament”  See nomination for more details on all tournaments won
